When they do occur, they are associated with non-vital teeth and typically present 6 months to 5 years after vitality is lost. They cause swelling, bone-loss and permanent tooth bud displacement. Often, they are incidental findings. A case involving radicular cysts on the left and right sides of the mandible is presented. If non-vital deciduous teeth receive pulp therapy, regular post- operative reviews are recommended.
","PeriodicalId":76703,"journal":{"name":"The New Zealand dental journal","volume":"108 3","pages":"106-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30939595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Atypical odontalgia--a diagnostic dilemma.","authors":"D N Thorburn, A D Polonowita","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Atypical odontalgia (AO) is a chronic orofacial pain condition of unclear pathophysiology, often presenting as toothache or pain at an extraction site. Idiopathic, psychogenic, vascular, and neuropathic causes have been proposed. In view of demonstrable somatosensory changes, and responses to management proposed for other forms of neuropathic pain, the best current evidence supports a neuropathic hypothesis. It is proposed that certain individuals with as-yet-undefined genetic vulnerability can develop AO when exposed to certain risk factors, including invasive dental treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of AO can be challenging, but can be aided by a multidisciplinary approach. {"title":"Herbal medicines--a cautionary tale.","authors":"Sophie Gray, Lance M West","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

We report an extensive intra-operative bleed which may have occurred as a result of the patient taking a herbal medicine. The patient underwent orthognathic surgery as a part of his orthodontic treatment, and lost approximately 3.5 litres of blood during the procedure. Preoperative blood tests were normal; the patient took no prescription medications and an appendectomy had been performed without incident. To aid healing, however, the patient had taken arnica the day before his operation. A concise literature review is presented which outlines the causes of surgical bleeding and discusses some of the bleeding concerns that herbal medicine use may raise for clinicians. Herbal medicines may contribute to unexplained surgical bleeding in the absence of other causative factors; it would therefore be useful to include an enquiry about the taking of herbal remedies at the history-taking stage for dental and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
","PeriodicalId":76703,"journal":{"name":"The New Zealand dental journal","volume":"108 2","pages":"68-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30756202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Internationally, little published literature has examined dental technicians' perspectives of CPD and CPD needs, and there is no published literature relating to the New Zealand context. Available research highlights the importance of CPD for maintaining high professional standards, ensuring patient safety, allowing dental technicians to keep abreast of current research and technological advances, fostering peer networks, and promoting job satisfaction. In 2009, an online open-ended questionnaire was developed to examine New Zealand dental and clinical dental technicians' perspectives of CPD and their perceived CPD needs. In total, 45 New Zealand registered dental technicians responded. Questionnaire responses provided rich qualitative insights into dental technicians' wide-ranging perceptions of CPD, factors that make CPD involvement more or less difficult and more or less desirable, and ways in which CPD access and relevance might be improved. This paper discusses the survey findings in the light of the existing literature on CPD and in relation to the unique New Zealand regulatory environment. It highlights the factors which respondents identified as shaping their CPD decisions, barriers to CPD engagement, perceived CPD needs, suggestions as to how the current CPD system could be improved, and areas for future research.
","PeriodicalId":76703,"journal":{"name":"The New Zealand dental journal","volume":"108 2","pages":"47-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30756199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Development of a dental model hardener.","authors":"Li-Hong He, Ludwig Jansen van Vuuren","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The paper presents a novel method of strengthening dental gypsum materials by infiltrating with a low-viscosity autopolymerising monomer. Gypsum specimens were infiltrated with diluted butyl-cyanoacrylate monomer at different concentrations. Nanoindentation was employed to measure their hardness and elastic modulus. A standard single-edge-notched beam (SENB) method was used to measure fracture toughness. Biaxial strength was measured using a universal test machine with a piston-on-ring jig. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and affiliated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to observe the fracture topography and the depth of infiltration. Infiltration and autopolymerisation of the cyanoacrylate improved the biaxial strength and fracture toughness of the gypsum by around 39% and around 30%, respectively. The hardness and elastic modulus for the treated specimens were also higher, albeit slightly. The proposed method provides a convenient way to strengthen and repair dental gypsum models in situ.
","PeriodicalId":76703,"journal":{"name":"The New Zealand dental journal","volume":"108 1","pages":"13-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30520304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
