The dental needs, the type and the cost of treatment of these children and especially those of the district of Athens have not been evaluated before. The purpose of this study was to determine these needs and evaluate the aforementioned parameters. The results of this study have shown that from the 1166 children aged 6-12 years of age, 71.6% have some problems with caries. There has been an increasing rate of the total dental needs of primary and permanent teeth from the age of 6 through the age of 12, for both sexes, although the dit index decreased after the age of 8 years. This finding partially shows that the intervention and the degree of treatment provided was very minor since the problem continued to the permanent dentition with the teeth becoming decayed immediately after they erupt. However, might be considered proof of the above the finding that the dental needs of the first permanent molar was only 1.4% at the age of 6 years while at the age of 12 years increased at 66.6%. The oral hygiene status of the children was moderate to bad for 85.9% of them and only 18.5% had a good oral hygiene. 36 per cent of the children had some orthodontic problem while a 7.4% of the total number of the children revealed crossbites. The cost of treatment and prevention per child was calculated as well and it was found that 68.7 (U.D.T.) units of Dental Treatment or 12.365 drs are required. The results of this study have shown the type the degree and cost of treatment of the dental needs of these children and the necessity for immediate intervention of treatment and comprehensive preventive measures.</p>","PeriodicalId":75901,"journal":{"name":"Hellenika stomatologika chronika. It is speculated that there is a genetic predisposition for the disease and for this reason HLA antigens may be involved. In our research we investigated 103 Greek patients suffering from recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) ranging in age from 13 to 60 years. For controls 242 individuals were tested the same period with no medical history of RAU. Consequently the protective measures taken for HBV in the surgery are adequate for the protection from HIV. Findings from 100 cases].","authors":"D Antoniadis, L Mendonidou, P Papanayotou, G Trigonidis","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The present work is based on a study of 100 cases of sialolithiasis referred to the Department of Oral Medicine, Dental School, University of Thessaloniki during the period 1963-1986. Among 100 cases sialolithiasis was distributed as following: Submandibular glands 89 cases, parotids 8 cases and minor salivary glands 3 cases. Sialolithiasis of sublingual glands were not found. In most of the cases the calculus was single while on 16 cases calculi were double or even more. Among the cases of sialolithiasis of minor salivary glands we found single in two cases while in the remaining one the calculi were double. There was a slight but not significant prevalence in the male sex (52 male/48 female) and their age varied from 6 to 70 years. In 72% of the cases the patient's age was under 40 with the most common (34%) in the 3rd decade. Inflammatory swelling of the sublingual plica and wharton's duct appeared in 46.4%. Complication of acute sialadenitis was observed in 23.7% of the cases. The first symptom was swelling of the gland during the meals (88.7%) while pain in the gland was followed after different period of time. The duration of symptoms was ranged between 1 to 30 years in 3% of the cases, and in the remaining 61% it ranged from 1 day to 1 year. The calculi were removed surgically in 40 cases and conservatively in 8 cases. All three cases of minor salivary gland sialolithiasis were treated surgically. The remaining 49 patients didn't return for complete treatment.</p>","PeriodicalId":75901,"journal":{"name":"Hellenika stomatologika chronika.
