Roodhouse","doi":"10.1386/cij.3.1.3_2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1386/cij.3.1.3_2","url":null,"abstract":"It is a pleasure to introduce this edition of the Creative Industries Journal, which brings together ideas, observations and analysis on the importance of place to the creative industries, largely from a geographical perspective. It reflects the editorial approach to the Journal that recognizes the multidisciplinary nature of the creative industries. By publishing a collection of papers focused on a particular feature of the creative industries common to all subsectors, in this case, place, investigated largely through the geographical discipline provides an international platform to better understand the industry as a whole. The papers included in this edition have been selected and edited from a seminar series, The Creative Industries and the Regions, organized by the Regional Studies Association research network. In particular, Roberta Comunian, School of Geography, University of Southampton, Caroline Chapain, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham and Nick Clifton, Cardiff School of Management, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff have been responsible for this edition. From these papers, the overarching message seems to be that cities remain the dominant force in the creative economy, but the significance and properties, as the invited authors say in their introduction, of the ‘cutting edge in strange places’ (Cornford and Naylor 2001: 22) deserves more investigation. However, the importance of both physical and virtual networks is not only reflected in this edition, but also emerges increasingly as a common theme in the Journal as a whole. Sian Joel in her article ‘A social network analysis approach to social model of the creative industries: the design subsector’ in volume 2 number 2 suggests that by analysing networks it is possible to locate a subsector of the creative industries within a social model of the industry as a whole. It would be useful to have further evidence on network analysis in the different subsectors.
