The specific scenario we consider is a ground detonation caused by an improvised nuclear device in a large urban region. In contrast to earlier work in this area that focuses largely on the prompt effects on human health and injury, we focus on co-evolution of individual and collective behavior and its interaction with the differentially damaged infrastructure. This allows us to study short term secondary and tertiary effects. The present environment is suitable for studying the dynamical outcomes over a two week period after the initial blast. A novel computing and data processing architecture is described; the architecture allows us to represent multiple co-evolving infrastructures and social networks at a highly resolved temporal, spatial, and individual scale. The representation allows us to study the emergent behavior of individuals as well as specific strategies to reduce casualties and injuries that exploit the spatial and temporal nature of the secondary and tertiary effects. A number of important conclusions are obtained using the modeling environment. For example, the studies decisively show that deploying ad hoc communication networks to reach individuals in the affected area is likely to have a significant impact on the overall casualties and injuries.</p>","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... We are concentrating on an automated optimization approach that is based on adapting model parameters in order to handle uncertainty that arises from stochastic elements of the process under study. We particularly investigate the use of global search methods in this context, as these methods allow the optimization strategy to escape from sub-optimal (i.e., local) solutions and, in that sense, they improve the efficiency of the simulation optimization process. The paper compares several global search methods and demonstrates the successful application of the Particle Swarm Optimizer to simulation modeling optimization and design of a steelworks plant, a representative example of the stochastic and unpredictable behavior of a complex discrete event simulation model.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... The stockyard layout plays an important role in storage and retrieval of the products. Stockyard layout planning offers a complex task as a large number of products are involved with different handling and storage requirements, and large stock is inevitable due to seasonality of demand. The major issues in planning stockyard layout include the proper design of stockyard space with roads and aisle networks and dynamic allocation of products to storage locations. A prototype \"SimStock\", an integrated process simulation model, was developed for planning and optimization of stockyard layouts for precast concrete products. The wire drawn from the high speed wire drawing (KOCH) machine is fed as the raw material for BEKEART (zinc coating galvanization) furnace. The problem faced by the company is the variability in the amount of input to the furnace, which results from the breakdowns occurring on the KOCH machine resulting in low production. Apart from its speed, KOCH machines have other advantages due to their automation by which they can be set as per the requirements and different parameters of the company. It can be concluded that any downtime in the process occurring at the KOCH machine adversely affects the productivity of the BEKEART furnace, as a result of which the total production on this line suffers and hence the profits of the company. A simulation study was done with the objective of increasing the throughput and ensuring smooth product flow through the system by finding the optimum arrival batch size.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... These trends in the airline industry have increased the percentage of transfer passengers. In order to minimize the number of missed connections and offer customers a seamless journey, airlines must maintain time limits in which domestic and international transfer passengers can reach their connecting gates at the airports. We focus on how simulation is used to evaluate an airline's minimum connect time criteria with respect to the design and operational policies at its hub airports. We consider a case study of Delta Air Lines' new planned state-of-the-art facility at John F. I apply the rather curious Linda coordination model to the classic Sleeping Barber Problem used frequently to illustrate inter-process communication activities in operating system courses. Normally, customers seeking haircuts are represented as processes spawned as faceless entities with no regard to inter-arrival times or proper ordering of departures for those who get cuts.
