In the case of skin bioprinting, thanks to the research process carried out during the last years, interfollicular skin has been printed with a structural and functional quality that paves the way for clinical and industrial applications. This review analyzes the present achievements and the future improvements that this area must bring about if bioprinted skin is to become widely used. We have made an effort to integrate the technological and the biological/biomedical sides of the subject.","PeriodicalId":73578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of 3D printing in medicine","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90190008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: In one case the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale was used to score maternal bonding before and after viewing of 3D-printed images. In the other case, the effect of the 3D-printed image was witnessed anecdotally. Both 3D prints were created using polylactic acid on an Ultramaker 2+ printer. Result: In both cases maternal bonding appeared to be improved. Increased global bonding and quality of attachment was quantifiably measured in the second case. Conclusion: 3D-printed models can be a useful addition to patient education and can positively impact maternal–fetal bonding. Further study is required to evaluate how 3D printing can affect maternal bonding in a larger setting.","PeriodicalId":73578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of 3D printing in medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76575273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further improvements are required, for example the development of biocompatible bioinks or need for vascularization. The journey from bench to bedside is challenging from the regulatory point of view where the establishment of manufacturing guidelines, quality systems and safety of use and administration of personalized medicines remains unclear. This review will provide an insight into the major applications of 3D printing in cancer both in the development of in vitro cancer models as well as personalized medicines for cancer patients focused on hydrogels and therapeutic implants. It is characterized by its avascular nature and for the shear and compressive forces that it can be subjected to. The number of individuals affected by the degeneration of fibrocartilaginous tissues has been growing and the poor outcomes of current treatments have led to an increased interest in new alternative approaches. Therefore, the combination of reverse engineering with 3D printing has been extensively explored in order to produce patient-specific implants capable of improving the current clinical outcomes. This review outlines the recent advances achieved in the tissue engineering field, especially focusing on fibrocartilaginous tissue.","PeriodicalId":73578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of 3D printing in medicine","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86122617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
