As a B student with As in math and some science courses, I received no scholarship offers, and there was no such thing as need-based support. While deciding what to do next, I looked for a summer job and came upon an ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s help-wanted section for a lab technician at the Eldridge Reeves Johnson Foundation for Research in Medical Physics. Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, the foundation was based on a legacy from the founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company, which was later swallowed up by RCA. It seemed interesting so I called them and was interviewed on a Saturday morning.","PeriodicalId":55033,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Annals of the History of Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141571433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seems clear that it does matter—after all, the iPhone achieved its market dominance in part because of Apple's world-leading supply chain. More recently, a global semiconductor shortage has stymied production of everything from Volkswagens to Xboxes. And of course, the systems organizing the sourcing, production, and distribution for nearly all of our products are designed and delivered by computer [29].","PeriodicalId":55033,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Annals of the History of Computing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141577773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
