HIC values were measured for each scenario and analyzed in relation to the Abbreviated Injury Scale to determine potential injury severity. <i>Results</i>: The findings showed that both the UAV's mass and impact velocity have a significant influence on the HIC value, with higher figures indicating a greater risk of serious injury. For the UAVs weighing 249 g and 500 g, frontal impacts resulted in the highest HIC values; however, for the UAV weighing 900 g, the highest HIC value occurred for the back hit. Moreover, injury risk was found to escalate non-linearly with increased velocity, especially for heavier UAVs. <i>Conclusions</i>: The study emphasizes the critical influence of UAV mass and impact velocity on the severity of head injuries in children. Increased mass and velocity correlated with higher HIC values, indicating a greater likelihood of severe injury. Frontal impacts were particularly hazardous for lighter UAVs, while rear impacts were more dangerous for heavier UAVs. These findings support the need for stringent regulations on UAV operational parameters, focusing on speed and mass limitations, to mitigate the risk of severe head injuries in children.</p>","PeriodicalId":519996,"journal":{"name":"Acta of bioengineering and biomechanics","volume":"25 4","pages":"121-132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141790865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Few studies have been reported on the glass formation ability (GFA) and corrosion degradation behavior of Ca-Mg-Zn amorphous alloys in the human body. In this work, we discuss a study on Ca<sub>53+<i>x</i></sub> Mg<sub>20</sub>Zn<sub>27-<i>x</i></sub> (<i>x</i> = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) alloys, focusing on changes in Zn content near eutectic points and their impact on microstructure and biological corrosion behavior. A copper mold spray casting method has been developed to prepare amorphous bar alloys and amorphous crystalline composite bar alloys with a diameter of 3 mm, which has been verified by X-ray diffraction, electrochemical treatment, and immersion tests. The experimental results demonstrated that the Ca<sub>3</sub>Zn and CaZn<sub>2</sub> phases were precipitated in the 3 mm bar material Ca<sub>53+<i>x</i></sub> Mg<sub>20</sub>Zn<sub>27-<i>x</i></sub> (<i>x</i> = 0, 2, 4), and Ca<sub>53+<i>x</i></sub> Mg<sub>20</sub>Zn<sub>27-<i>x</i></sub> (<i>x</i> = 6, 8, 10) was completely amorphous. The Ca<sub>63</sub>Mg<sub>20</sub>Zn<sub>17</sub> alloy showed the best glass-forming ability, while the Ca<sub>59</sub>Mg<sub>20</sub>Zn<sub>21</sub> alloy exhibited superior corrosion resistance. In the literature two main approaches to ligament prestrain can be found in ankle modeling. The first one assumes a strain-free configuration, effectively omitting the prestrain, while in the second one the slack lengths are obtained by shortening the ligament lengths in the rest configuration by 2%. These approaches were not compared directly in a controlled environment. <i>Methods</i>: The aim of the study to compare the two common approaches to ligament prestrain in ankle joint modeling. The approaches are compared on a collection of models generated by random sampling from a 6-link, 2-contact pair multibody model of the ankle. Random sampling includes perturbation of slack lengths, which makes the generated models prestrained and with known output characteristics. Their resemblance to the original model and the ankle joint makes them viable for using in a prestrain comparison. Each generated model is prestrain with the two approaches, then the outputs are compared to determine, which approach returns results closer to reality. <i>Results</i>: The comparison was performed on 592 generated models. On average, the strain-free approach significantly outperformed the 2% shortening. <i>Conclusions</i>: The method for testing prestrain proposed in the paper is an effectively tool for exploring the solution space of the model. The obtained results were interesting, but should be taken with caution as they are connected to the test condition. However, the method is general and could used with any other biomechanical model.</p>","PeriodicalId":519996,"journal":{"name":"Acta of bioengineering and biomechanics","volume":"25 4","pages":"3-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141790868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To the authors' knowledge, the three odontoid ligaments, the alar ligament, the vertical portion of the cruciate ligament, and the transverse ligament, have not been biomechanically examined in type II odontoid fracture in spite of their potential significance in management. Therefore, this study aims to explore the intersegmental rotations of the craniovertebral junction following Anderson and D'Alonzo type II odontoid fracture and various combinations of ligament ruptures. <i>Methods</i>: A validated C0-C7 cervical spine finite element model was employed to address the research objectives. The model was subjected to flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation under eight distinct injury conditions apart from the intact state. Prescribed rotations were applied to the top of the cranium while the C7 inferior surface was fixed. Rotation-moment data were retrieved from the model. <i>Results</i>: Type II odontoid fracture caused mixed forms of instability considering flexion-extension. In lateral bending, the fracture alone did not have a significant effect, whereas the disruption of ligaments led to moderate rotation increments. Notably, in axial rotation, the fracture was the most crucial factor for stability. <i>Conclusions</i>: Overall, type II odontoid fracture was found to be the main destabilizing element. Nonetheless, the vertical cruciate and the transverse ligament played a modest role in stabilization. The alar ligament provided minimal or no stability.
