To this end, universities were compelled to overhaul their existing institutional operations in conformance with the lockdown protocols enforced by the National Government. The sudden switch to an unplanned remote mode of teaching and learning becomes not only a lamentable reality for both academics but also a daunting challenge for many students. Concomitantly, this pandemic has rudely exposed a range of disparities that exist among tertiary students in South Africa. Consequently, many students of lower socioeconomic status lack the necessary resources and skills to succeed on a virtual platform of learning. Furthermore, during the lockdown period, many students were compelled to return to their rural towns and study in workspaces that were not conducive to learning, thus limiting their chances to engage optimally. This raises the question: How will students confined to their rural township homes that are not conducive to learning and do not have the efficacies to adapt to digital learning access, engage in, and successfully complete the current academic year? In fact, the digital divide widens the epistemic gap for most students from rural and vulnerable communities, diminishing their opportunities to access an inclusive and participatory education. Equally, COVID-19 forcibly sanctions that digital learning is no longer a privilege but a right to inclusive education. Consequently, this paper will highlight the vast chasms and challenges experienced by vulnerable first-year students of rural communities during the lockdown period, mostly highlighting the constraints on their epistemic access in the context of a pandemic.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"224 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135361111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to gain insight into child and youth care workers’ resilience by examining the challenges faced by these workers and establish the methods used to overcome these challenges. This study employed a qualitative research method and data was collected from a child and youth care centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, employing a purposive sampling technique using 9 workers. Seven themes emerged from this study and it was evident that the respondents shared a common understanding of resilience. It was also found that an individual’s grassroots had an impact on developing a passion to work with young people as well as coping with work challenges. Positive protective factors that emerged were support systems in the organisation as motivators as well as maintaining a balance between work and personal life, while negative factors were low salaries and poor working conditions. The study concluded by recommending organisational interventions to support resilience in child and youth care workers and maintain expertise in child and youth care work.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136373052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, consumers can effortlessly conduct online information searches about brands based on their interest in brands' social media pages or read brand reviews made by other consumers on social media networks. Social media is undisputedly characterised by ratings, comments, reviews, and other features found on websites that indicate what users think of the content being discussed. Taking note of what users say on social media and engaging in discussions is a great way for brands to influence these discussions and condition consumers’ purchase decisions and intentions. To achieve the objectives of this research, this study adopts a quantitative research method in which convenience and purposive sampling were utilised to recruit research participants. Self-administered, structured questionnaires are used to collect primary data. Both descriptive and inferential statistics are utilised in this study. Data is analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0. The outcomes of this research advocate that social media is an immensely powerful communication tool that can be used to shape consumers’ purchase intentions.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135556853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recognition of this, Durban University of Technology (DUT) pre-emptively enabled collaboration between the institution and a cluster of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in 2004. This paper examines one of the partnership programmes between the Gandhi Development Trust and the Durban University of Technology, the Early Childhood Development Values Education Project and the successful Community Engagement partnerships created with three academic departments of DUT. It focuses on the Department of Drama programme based on Bloomgarden’s Preparation, Action, Reflection, Evaluation (PARE) framework integrating experiential and academic learning. The study draws on the theoretical lens of Dewey’s Democracy and Education and Freire’s Critical Pedagogy and uses the case study method to present the data gathered through the PARE phases. Foregrounded in the paper is the impact of democratic education characterised by values such as inclusiveness, participation, reciprocity, and an equality of respect for the knowledge and experience that everyone contributes to education and community building.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135318225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have high strength, wear, and thermal properties. MEAs have generated interest as an alternative material in the last two decades in nuclear, aerospace, and high strength engineering applications. In this research a medium entropy alloy Fe20Cr20Mn20Ni20Ti10Co5V5 with principal elements Fe, Cr, Mn, and Ni was fabricated using spark plasma sintering. Elemental powder mixture was sintered at temperatures of 870oC, 900oC and 950oC under 35 bar pressure under an inert argon atmosphere for 45 minutes using an FCT Systeme GmbH spark plasma sintering machine. After sand blasting the densities of the samples were measured before grinding, polishing, and etching for characterisation. Microstructure analysis was carried using scanning electron and optical microscopy. Microhardness was measured using Falcon 507 hardness tester, modulus using by Anton-Paar Nanoindenter and wear using Anton-Paar TRB3 Tribometer. The elements form a solid solution with presence of a hard μ phase and soft γ-phase were observed. The hardness of the alloys sintered at 870oC and 900oC were 397 and 424 Vickers respectively. The alloy sintered at 950oC showed a hardness of 674 Vickers. After annealing the hardness increased to 736 Vickers. The modulus of elasticity and creep resistance increased after heat treatment at 700oC.The other alloys showed a decrease in hardness and other properties after annealing. Unlike in steels, where annealing reduces, in this alloy annealing increased hardness at an appropriate temperature. Fe20Cr20Mn20Ni20Ti10Co5V5 MEA exhibited good thermal stability. Further work on the alloy will involve its crystallography, and feasibility for use elevated temperature energy applications such as fuel cells, turbines and wear resistant machine components.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"249 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135550013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Service delivery has not improved due to privatization, voluntary early retirement, or reorganization. Performance contracting was an option for decreasing service decreases, but only in partnership with Huduma Centres. According to a 2020 Government report, the Centres serviced less than 30,000 customers daily and earned around Kshs 12 billion in revenue. Previous studies on performance contracting were mostly case studies rather than surveys. According to the literature, performance contracting affected service delivery, but Huduma Centres had a dwindling fortune requiring further study. The study's objective was to assess the effect of performance contracting on service delivery. A correlational survey design was used in the study. The target population consisted of 276 workers. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire, and data was analysed descriptively and using regression analysis. The results revealed that performance contracting increased service delivery by 60.1% or R2=0.601. The study recommends that attention be paid to all the stages in performance contracting to enhance service delivery, and pieces of training and incentives are crucial to performance contracting. The policymakers now know from the study that incentives, goal setting, and performance monitoring are critical to service delivery.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135667383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that any substance with the capacity of producing disease in its crude state has the capacity to treat a similar disease if taken in a very small dose. Homeopathic Nosodes are homoeopathic remedies sourced from diseased materials and organisms. Homoeopathic nosodes may be used to treat and prevent infectious and non-infectious diseases. The incidence of infectious diseases epidemics is now occurring more often around the world. The common public threat includes the emergence of antibiotic resistance which is increasing globally. Contributing factors of this emergence are linked to underlying biological, and environmental issues, lifestyle changes, misuse, and overprescribing of antibiotics. Despite strengthening health infrastructure, every epidemic and multi-drug resistance bacterium poses a challenge to the government, policymakers, health professionals, and the whole population. This article will review data available on homoeopathic nosodes, as well as present evidence that is available to support the use of homoeopathic nosodes in disease prevention and treatment. It also highlights several clinical trials and in vitro studies on the use of homoeopathy to target health issues that have the potential to harm public health and possibly assist in reducing healthcare costs.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HEIs and policymakers now need to reconsider how they should be creating entrepreneurial innovation systems to support a robust global economy and a better world. The objective of this article is to describe the socio-institutional and techno-economic innovation components of innovation systems. The development of a theoretical framework for constructing a healthy innovation ecosystem at HEIs will be guided by an analysis of the already available literature and practical responses to the issues. The methodology followed a systematic review approach that considered articles found within the google scholar website. According to the research cited in this article, HEIs must comprehend how innovation systems affect their innovation to conduct research, innovate, and commercialise. The ramifications of this research emphasise how crucial it is to forge connections between academic universities and commercial enterprises as part of formulating a roadmap for developing robust support systems for research, innovation, and commercialization.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136367282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the figurative construct of ‘senior citizen’ and the visual art form of conceptual ceramics, this paper creates a sort of metaphorized analogy that depicts an allegory of Nigeria’s perennial farmer-herder crisis scenario, where the wellbeing of the citizenry appears to have been subordinated to those of the herders and their herds. The uncommon ceramic art approach that negates traditional production methods has been explored in this study to interrogate the outlined concerns. This process includes the pinching of plastic clay, placing it in the palm, rolling the clay with both palms into a stick-like shape, placing the stick at the foot of the fingers, tightly compressing the clay by closing the fists, and finally releasing the clay to reveal the product. This style that has been termed fragmented clay palm press terracotta on canvas proved effective and fluid enough to achieve the essence of this study. The intriguing situation of Nigeria’s socio-political metaphor vis-à-vis the prevailing farmer-herder conundrum is explored in an attempt to foreground the existential irony that this awkward situation portends.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136373045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an urgent need to identify plants with antimicrobial activity as there is an increase in the incidence of new and re-emerging infectious diseases. The present study compares species from two different localities used to treat common skin diseases, the parts used, and the method used to prepare traditional cures. The prevalence of skin disease compared to other ailments were also compared. Traditional healers from northern (seven main districts) and mid-KwaZulu-Natal (three main districts) muthi markets were randomly selected and interviewed after obtaining consent. Data collected included the specific plants used to treat skin diseases, common names, parts of the plant used, the collection locality, and the conditions treated by the traditional healers. Fourteen plant species were collected and traded in northern KwaZulu-Natal based on their curative properties and their use to treat wounds, skin lesions, rashes, burns, and scratches compared to only six in mid-KwaZulu-Natal. Approximately 43 percent of species were common to all districts, possibly due to their wide distribution. People with skin diseases formed the majority of traditional healer consults. Most conditions were very similar, possibly due to rural communities following a similar lifestyle. Skin infections and eczema were commonly treated conditions, followed by acne, hair disorders, and bruises. Skin diseases are common amongst rural community dwellers in KwaZulu-Natal regardless of location, possibly due to their association with HIV infection. The plants used by traditional healers to treat various conditions are related to geographical distribution and abundance patterns.","PeriodicalId":491555,"journal":{"name":"African journal of inter-multidisciplinary studies","volume":"266 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135360874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
