Through the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach, this study first constructs the index of the total-factor cultivated land efficiency (TFcLE) by taking the ratio of the actual cultivated land input to target the cultivated land input. next, we examine the determinants of inefficiency on the cultivated land use. Based on a province-level panel data over 1997–2006, the empirical estimates indicate that the TFcLE is moderate and fluctuates during the sample period, ranging from 0.601 to 0.713, suggesting room for efficiency improvement in chinese farmland use. The coastal regions are found to experience a significantly higher degree of the TFcLE compared with non-coastal regions. overall, there is no significant competition effect brought on by the WTo entry on promoting TFcLE, though this effect differs between the coastal and non-coastal regions. The second-stage regression results show that the natural and artificial disasters, flood, drought, and pollution are the the main causes of inefficiency. innovative activity and the FDi are evidenced to have a significantly positive relation with the TFcLE in chinese agriculture. Faltan","doi":"10.17221/5150-AGRICECON","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17221/5150-AGRICECON","url":null,"abstract":"Social-political transition in the former socialist countries led to a new understanding of borders and created the prerequisites for renaissance and significant activation of the cross-border co-operation. This way, Slovakia along with other countries joined the Euro-regional movement in Europe, which spread since the end of 60-ies through Western-European countries. Formation and institutionalisation of Euro-regional relations, links and co-operation was initially hindered by a whole range of obstacles, including the ones with political background. It was obvious mainly in Slovakia where it influenced the existence and potential establishment of new Euro-regional associations. Rebirth of the Euro-regional activities started after 1998. Currently, there are Euro-regions practically operating along the entire Slovak border with its neighbours. The extent and form of institutionalisation and professional staffing varies. Activities of Euro-regions are merely based on projects which bring funding. Projects are broadly oriented, while the prevailing focus is currently on the economic activation of Euro-regions. There is a lack of partner co-operation and co-ordination of activities between countries and their activities, including cross-border activities and activities of Euro-regions. To understand the recent beer-consumption behaviour, we use the monthly data from a three year period, 2006-2008, to estimate both the 2SLS and the SUR model charting the demand for beer extended to the past con- sumption and advertising expenditure. The demand for beer in the Czech Republic reacts more strongly to the changes in price than it does to the investments in advertising. The results suggest two implications for the policy-makers. Th e authors examine the development taking place in this domain within the last 14 years (i.e. from 1997 to 2010). Th e paper analyses the reasons of these changes and tries to describe the future development expected after 2010. Th e article also examines the cost and profi tability of growing grapes and wine prices. Th e current production potential of the Czech Republic is 19 633.45 hec- tares of vineyards. As compared with 1960, the total acreage of vineyards increased nearly three times and the number of the most frequent varieties has also increased. As far as the percentages of Muller Th urgau, Green Veltliner, Italian Riesling and Sankt Laurent varieties is concerned, it is anticipated that their acreages will further decrease, whereas those of Rhein Riesling, Sauvignon, Lemberger and Zweigeltrebe are expected to grow. Th e results from the survey of consumer behaviour in the wine market in the CR point to the connection between the structure of the vineyards and consumer demand.
