We report here four cases of incidentally diagnosed primary renal squamous cell carcinoma that were treated at our hospital. The mean age of the patients (two females and one male aged above 60 years, except one male whose age was 25 years) was 60 years. Both the males and one of the females had a history of multiple renal calculi, and the other female had staghorn calculus. Interestingly, renal carcinoma was not suspected clinically in all these patients. In one case, a computerized tomography scan (CT scan) showed suspicious mass. All underwent nephrectomy for the non-functioning kidney. In only two cases, tumor was identified on gross examination, whereas the other two only showed a distorted pelvis. Our case series emphasizes the need for pelvicalyceal biopsy during diagnosis and treatment for long-standing nephrolithiasis and thorough sampling of nephrectomy specimens of such patients to rule out malignancy.</p>","PeriodicalId":48557,"journal":{"name":"Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C-Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"S928-S931"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77103190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this purpose, we pretend to study the period known as medieval renaissance proposing a possible contribution of the platonism, examining what it offered in terms of a new epistemology of the universe (universitas), and its law of harmony. The argumentation is supported on the cosmology of the Timaeus, which provided a rational Christian theology — the theology of “measure, number and weight” — as well as a mathematical and proportional view of the cosmos. Nonetheless, this intellectual reading overlaps with mystical speculations which are supported by the doctrines of Pseudo-Dionysius, in his analogies between the Creation and the Trinity. Meanwhile, the demand of divine brands in the order of universe provides a link between microcosm and macrocosm which will benefit analogies between the Church, Christ-Man and the Universe, with a consequent valoration of the human dignity. Indeed, combining mystic and rationality, the twelfth century neoplatonism consists in timaic and dionysian ideals that unfolds a new epistemology of the universe.","PeriodicalId":48557,"journal":{"name":"Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C-Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73525022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to elucidate whether masting depletes the whole-tree NSC storage pool, seasonal and inter-annual variations in starch and soluble sugar (SS) concentrations in branchlets, stems and coarse roots of <i>Fagus crenata</i> were measured in two stands over 5 years after a full masting event. Full masting reduced individual storage pools to 72% and 49% of the maxima in the two stands; this was observed 2-3 years after full masting. In addition, temporary reduction in starch concentration in summer due to moderate fruiting was found in roots and deep sapwood cores of stems, representing tree rings formed 20 years ago, but not in branchlets. Together with a higher starch storage pool in roots than in branchlets, these results indicate that starch stored in roots and stems is available and supports life-history traits, such as masting events, that occur irregularly. Moreover, limited rainfall in the late growing season caused a reduction in both organ NSC concentration and individual storage irrespective of masting, which further complicated the masting-NSC relationship. These findings have important implications for interpreting the role of carbon resources in masting events.</p>","PeriodicalId":48557,"journal":{"name":"Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C-Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"18"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11524249/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77102875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
