It accounts for 1 – 3% of benign teratomas of the ovary. Malignant transformation is observed in 5-37% cases of struma ovarii. Peak age of incidence 4 - 5th decade with excellent prognosis. We report a rare form of malignant struma ovarii, composed of a follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma with capsular invasion. A65-year-old hypertensive postmenopausal female presented with complaints of pain in abdomen, pelvic mass, frequent micturition, since 3 days. A pelvic sonogram showed an enlarged heterogenous right ovarian mass of sized 12 x 9 x 5 cm, with solid cystic lesion. Left ovary was unilocular and cystic of sized 5.5 x 4 x 3 cm. The uterus and cervix appeared to be normal. She underwent an exploratory laparotomy, and a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Based on histopathological and radiological features an impression of follicular variant of papillary carcinoma of thyroid with capsular invasion was favoured. : The patient was successfully treated with total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy. There are no sign of recurrence and metastasis two months after surgery. Patient is under regular follow up. : Malignant struma ovarii is a medical rarity and very few studies have been reported.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135761315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are a diverse group of tumours with both benign and malignant counterparts. They can be single, multiple, or have a syndromic association with internal malignancies. Benign adnexal tumours are more common, while malignant adnexal tumours are rare, usually locally aggressive, and have the potential for nodal involvement and distant metastasis with a poor clinical outcome. Therefore, proper diagnosis of SATs is important for therapeutic and prognostic reasons. This study aims to determine the clinico-histopathological correlation in cases of SATs in our hospital. It is a case series conducted over a one-and-a-half year period from January 2021 to July 2022. All clinically suspected cases of SATs were examined, biopsied, and subjected to histopathological examination. Histopathologically confirmed cases of SATs were finally analysed. Among twenty-four thousand two hundred twenty-four new patients attending OPD, 30 suspected cases of ATs underwent histopathological examination. Histopathology was confirmatory in only 12 cases (40%). 10 cases were benign, and two were malignant. Out of 10 benign cases, hidradenoma was noted in 3 (25%), trichoepithelioma in 2 (16%), proliferating pilar tumour, apocrine hidrocystoma, steatocystoma multiplex, hidradenoma papilliferum, and pilomatrixoma were seen in one each. Females (75%) outnumbered males (25%) in our study population. : SATs are infrequent and are not frequently observed in the field of surgical pathology. Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Androgens play an important and vital role in the development of male urethra. Androgen signalling through the AR is critical for normal penile development. The objective of our study was to prospectively assess the AR staining score in children with hypospadias in comparison with children with normal genitalia. All children with hypospadias presenting to the Paediatric urological services for repair formed the study group. Children with normal genitalia and undergoing circumcision either for phimosis or for religious indications formed the controls. A piece of the foreskin was collected during surgery and were stained for immunohistochemistry. AR staining was expressed as an m-quick score. A total of 32 children (group I) underwent primary hypospadias repair and 24 children (group II) underwent circumcision during the study period. The mean m-quick score in patients with hypospadias was 219.96 and that of children undergoing circumcision was 90.04 (p <0.050). AR is overexpressed in patients with hypospadias when compared with patients with normal genitalia. Similarly, AR is significantly overexpressed in patients with proximal hypospadias when compared with distal hypospadias.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135761316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an extremely rare inherited disease. The disease results due to defective resorption of bone by the osteoclasts. This causes bone mass to increase accompanied by decreased hematopoietic tissue, causing extramedullary hematopoiesis. The clinical and radiological assessment plays an important role in diagnosis of infantile osteopetrosis. Clinical symptoms range from asymptomatic adults to life threatening condition in infants. We report a 4-month-old female patient with infantile osteopetrosis presenting with leukoerythroblastic blood picture and hepatosplenomegaly. This case highlights the importance of hematological findings, radiographic and genetic analysis for diagnosis of osteopetrosis.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135761317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was aimed to revisit the spectrum of thyroid lesions in surgically resected specimens, their clinicopathological characteristics and to compare the cytological and imaging findings in discrepant cases. The present retrospective study retrieved a total of 69 cases of thyroid resection specimens with available relevant demographic, clinicoradiological and cytological findings. The histopathological diagnosis was considered gold standard. Colloid goitre (37.7%) and papillary carcinoma (17.4%) were found to be the commonest non-neoplastc and neoplastic lesions respectively. Peak incidence in 20-40 years of age group and M:F ratio of 1:3.6 in overall thyroid disorders was noted. 08 discrepent cases were observed while comparing histological diagnosis with radiological and /or cytological findings. Histopathological diagnoses were in agreement with imaging findings and /or FNAC results in most of the cases, however, patients with indeterminate or suspicious FNAC results, need to be followed-up for early surgical intervention if required.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transitional meningioma is a WHO grade I meningioma characterized by the coexistence of meningothelial cells and fibrous architectural patterns. A35 year female presented with history of intermittent fever, headache of 1 month duration. And since last 2 days with altered level of consciousness and vomiting. : MRI of the brain was performed using TI weighted spin echoI2 weighted turbo spin echo and turbo Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery: FLAIR diffusion sequences. It showed a large, lobulated, enhancing lesion in right fronto-temporal region, along right greater wing of sphenoid suggestive of meningioma. Surgical excision of tumor was done. On histopathology showed a benign tumor consists of meningothelial and fibrous proliferation. The meningothelial cells were arranged in fascicles, with the fibroblastic tumor in syncytial pattern. The nuclei were round, uniform without nucleoli. The chromatin was fine and open. The tumor cells were spindle having abundant pink cytoplasm, indistinguishable cell membranes and bland nuclear features. Mitotic figures and atypia were absent .Scattered Psammoma bodies were noted. Histopathological diagnosis was gives as benign WHO grade 1 tumor- transitional meningioma. Due to enhanced and improved imaging, histopathological techniques the increased incidence of meningiomas is observed and it will be helpful for better outcomes of patients. We are presenting this case of transitional meningioma benign tumor WHO grade1for its clinical, radioimaging and histopatholgical findings.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They may also develop in the smaller salivary glands, which are common in the nasal cavity. The aim is to present this rare case which was diagnosed with tissue sampling and histopathological examination in conjunction with radiological findings. A 36-year-old woman's right nasal cavity was found to have a soft tissue mass that was seen protruding from the nasal septum. A detailed histological analysis led to the conclusion that the nasal cavity was home to a pleomorphic adenoma. In conclusion, pleomorphic adenomas in minor salivary glands are extremely uncommon, and they are much more uncommon in the nasal cavity, where they typically develop from the nasal septum. Due to the presence of lower stromal and higher epithelial components, it may be misdiagnosed at early stages. Resultant delayed detection leads to aggressive treatment.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135761318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There was a surge of mucormycosis during COVID19 pandemic in 2021. This study elaborates the histopathological findings observed in fungal infections of head and neck in COVID 19 patients. A retrospective observational study of histopathological findings of invasive fungal infection in COVID 19 case was conducted in our laboratory. All the tissue samples diagnosed as post COVID fungal infections during January 2021 to June 2021 were analyzed. Representative sections were taken and slides were stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin, Periodic Acidic Schiff (PAS) and Gomori Methenamine silver (GMS) stains. Histopathological features were studied. There were total 32 cases which had invasive fungal infections associated with COVID 19. The most affected age group was 31 to 50 years of age (50%), with male preponderance (87.5%). Diabetes was present in 62.5% cases, and steroid use during the treatment was present in 31.3% of the cases. The most common site was maxillary sinus (53.1%) followed by nasal cavity (34.4%). Isolated infection by mucor was seen in 68.8% cases, there were cases of secondary bacterial infection and candida with aspergillus infection. Angioinvasion was present in 56.3% cases and bone destruction in 15.6% cases. COVID 19 infection results in immune dysregulation and background of diabetes and over use of steroids increases risk of mucormycosis. An early histopathological diagnosis provides early diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":479918,"journal":{"name":"IP archives of cytology and histopathology research","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135761319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
