Building additions are planned and designed under restrictions and regulations and are developed and supervised mainly by global organizations. Additions may be considered a compromise between expanding historic buildings and accentuating the historic buildings’ important values. The discussion on the ontological perspective of conservation aspects is directly related to additions. According to conservation discourse, designs of additions are derived after scrutinizing and evaluating the historic building. Therefore, the addition should be visualized differently from both past and present architectural representations. A method to appraise historic buildings’ additions is needed to evaluate and justify them. The historic building and its addition are combined as separate entities, and therefore a new term has been proposed to describe this symbiosis: A Combined But-Not Unified Entity (CBNUE). In this article, I propose adding another layer of examination of the CBNUE reciprocity through parasitic and prosthetic architecture theories. This examination challenges the design of additions and offers an alternative view of additions that can be considered appropriate according to international guidelines. Thus, the addition can be considered appropriate within the context of an image of a parasite or a prosthesis.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45306542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the archival documents of Mualla Eyüboğlu, the architect responsible for the restoration of the Topkapı Palace between 1961 and 1969, and the resolutions of the High Board of Antiquities and Monuments, this study reveals a stimulating debate on the balancing of the preservation of historic document value versus aesthetic value. Ambitious to present the building in its original function and use of the space as a part of the imperial residence, Eyüboğlu decided to liberate the original building of all the later additions and tried to reinstate the building to its initial seventeenth-century state. The removal of historical layers was disapproved by some of her contemporaries, while others appreciated her aesthetic concern. The case is reviewed at a broader scale, opening up to and integrating similar discussions in European preservation theory in the 1960s.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43900223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the architectural heritage, we seek to understand the relation between architecture conservation and the history of architecture. And how does the relationship occur between these two? The history of Afghanistan's architectural heritage reflects the country's primordial legacy and has had played a remarkable role in Afghan civilization. It is needed to visualize, protect and preserve them. The Afghanistan’s architectural heritage sites are notable for various features, one of the most significant features being the architectural significance of ornamentation and elements. These architectural features depict the age in which the building was built, utilizing the technology, craftsmanship, building morphology and styles known at the time. Afghan culture has played a critical part in human civilization throughout its lengthy history and has made significant contributions. Scholarly interest in Afghan culture, including history, archaeology, art, and architecture, has spurred research into Afghan cultural heritage during the past two decades. This study investigates explicitly to reveal the identity of Afghan architecture heritage through history definitions, style, typology, conservation and its contribution to future sustainability.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45186684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The behaviour of 21 school buildings built in Chile between 1937 and 1965 was comparatively analysed using the pathological diagnosis method. The documentation, in-situ observation, and measurements with non-destructive testing show that mechanical damages are more severe than physical–chemical damages. The levels and classification of deterioration are affected by accumulated damage due to the property's age and the characteristics of the architectural and structural design, which evolve from models of resistance by rigidity to flexible behaviour, which have lower levels of damages. In turn, the physical–chemical damage in the envelopes will depend mainly on the construction quality of the enclosures and the maintenance processes, rather than on the variation of the period's designs. An adequate pathological diagnosis of this architectural heritage allows the generation of appropriate conservation action guidelines to prolong the durability of these heritage works.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46307250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, more than a hundred towers were built to connect Madrid to Irún, Valencia and the Andalusia. Decommissioned at the end of the nineteenth century, despite their historical value, the towers are today abandoned with a high level of material and functional obsolescence, waiting for a new utilization. In light of the above-mentioned aspects, the research aims at the identification, cataloguing and qualification of the telegraphic towers located on the pathway from Madrid to Valencia in order to propose a large-scale territorial project for their preservation and enhancement. In particular, the paper is going to describe, first, a historical and morphological evolution of the telegraphic towers. Second, a methodology for qualification of the architectural, material, constructive and functional characteristics of the towers is reported, with a specific reference to the given case study of the telegraphic paths between Madrid and Valencia. Finally, a redevelopment scenario is proposed for the restoration of the towers as well as for their integration in a cycling and pedestrian naturalistic pathway.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45205631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conservation of imitative crafts may be compromised without a nuanced and specific approach. Conserving inventions of the past presents unique challenges since the mechanism of deterioration of artificial and natural materials intrinsically differ; the decay of natural stone or marble is different from that of scagliola. Current decision-making often aimed at increasing authenticity through retaining the ageing quality of the original fabric, may paradoxically devaluate the heritage significance if the original imitative intentions are not followed. This work aims to set a theoretical foundation upon which a code of practice could be developed to prevent further cultural heritage loss. The fundamental difference between artificial materials and imitative surfaces should inform guidelines for conservation policy. The skills of imitative crafts should be protected to retain their cultural significance.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46602850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many studies from which it can be deduced that there is a need to address recovery, re-functionalization and infrastructural integration, through the understanding of the urban environment and the opportunity to define a cultural orientation, that should be a sort of code of conduct that allows us to re-inhabit this architectural heritage. When giving new life to structures it is essential to respect the needs connected with modern living, but without altering their consolidated character over time, with interventions related to the original constructive, typological, functional and technological characteristics; at the same time, it is necessary to give particular attention to the integration and sustainability of the new interventions. This is the case in the reconversion of an urban context such as Matera; this city currently presents the image of a contemporary Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019, deeply involved in sustainable management and maintenance, a ‘smart’ city, and a symbol of restoration and historical heritage.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41759610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These three words are the central issue of the ‘cultural resource’, that must be capable of answering future demands regarding the protection and consolidation, growth and development of cities and territories by properly using lands and materials of an architecture stratified over millennia. Corrige: Cultural Heritage is a resource involving themes, strictly linked among them, of knowledge, reading, interpretation, intervention, and recovery. Aligned with the previous premises, the VII International Conference of ReUSO 2019 (documentation, restoration and reuse of heritage) organized on 23–26 October 2019 in Matera, Italy, the city awarded the European Capital of Culture 2019, promoted a multidisciplinary approach focused on cultural heritage issues, such as architectural surveys, traditional and innovative methods for preservation, construction techniques and materials, approaches and methods of diagnosis and monitoring, maintenance and durability of interventions, and numerical investigations. Among the proceedings presented during this Conference, some works were selected to be re-submitted in an extended version and collected in this Special Issue. This collection consists of selected research, illustrations and projects, coherent with the Conference topics, in order to provide several examples of how it is possible to observe the architecture world and to preserve it in the future with a rational approach. All over the world there is varying evidence of earthen constructions. Thanks to its geological and morphological nature, Italy has a fair number of earthen constructions, albeit of limited dimensions, belonging to a constructive heritage of the past. On the other hand, China, especially the south of the country, is characterized by numerous structures of raw earth of considerable dimensions, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The research is focused, in the Italian case, on the areas of Lucania and, in the Chinese case, on the areas of the Fujian province. The difficulty of intervening on a material that has been widespread since the first decades of the last century requires a careful evaluation to determine the residual strength as a function of the useful life. Furthermore, there are considerable problems deriving from the poor packaging of concretes, both for reasons of lack of technological knowledge and of a speculative nature, particularly in Italy in the post-war period. To these considerations on the vulnerability of concrete are added those deriving from the seismic as well as static risk. In recent decades, an important research has been developed and consequent production of high-tech nanotechnological concretes that allow an ever greater possibility of intervention to safeguard these structures. In this sense we describe the recovery of the Tower of Nations, one of the most representative buildings of the Mostra d’Oltremare, which is one of the greatest examples of urban and architectural intervention in Naples in the Fascist period.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43937947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
