A brief analysis of each converter is carried out and a design methodology is presented, focused in reducing output filtering capacitance, still achieving acceptable current ripple on the output and eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. The LED photometric performance under different ripple conditions has been analyzed to aid the design methodology in order to optimize output current ripple selection and capacitor reduction. The control strategy for each converter was presented and validated experimentally. FMS uses various technologies integrated in a system, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). An AGV which serves an FMS environment usually has four components: the vehicles (uni or multiloaded), the load/deposit stations, the orientation and traffic control system and the communication system. In this research, we specified and implemented a communication system for AGVs intended as a resource for FMS. We used a cellbot framework (MIT App Inventor Beta) in order to make the infrastructure easily available for researchers. The methodology used was based on evolutionary and incremental prototyping. The rectifiers operate in CCM (continuous conduction mode) with high power factor and output voltage control. Converter switching stages are analyzed for single-phase structure and the three-phase Y-connected and the Δ-connected rectifiers are derived from it. These rectifiers have the advantages of providing high power factor with low input filtering effort, as Boost rectifiers, and lower output voltage level, as Buck rectifiers. The disadvantage is the increase of component count, due the need for additional capacitors and inductor per phase. The control strategy is presented with a description of the objectives of the mains current control loop and the output voltage control loop. The topology presents five-levels voltage before of output LC filter, providing high order harmonics that are easily filtered. In this topology, the output filter ripple frequency is twice the switching frequency, therefore reducing the magnetic weight and volume. Other characteristics of the inverter are current sharing through the devices, facilitating its losses dissipation, due to increased contact area and few involved components in the current flow path. The model is based on resistances and reactances and takes into account the real and reactive lamp power. One of the most important features of the proposed methodology is the concern regarding core losses and lamp reactive characteristics. In order to obtain and validate the IEFL model, a series-parallel resonant half-bridge inverter is used as the ballast power stage. Lamp discharge and coils are modeled as resistances and reactances depending on the lamp power. Usually, the utilities can use multiple criteria regarding the observation of regulation policies and public awareness to drive the topological reconfiguration. Several researchers are looking for new optimization methods, as the complexity of this combinatorial issue is high in large systems and the classic optimization methods are failing to address the problem reasonably. Additionally, there is possibility to explore the automation equipment applying the concept of Smart Grid. This paper presents a new methodology and computer program for distribution network automatic reconfiguration. The topology is defined in real time and automatically performed by means of remote-controlled switches. The methodology includes a validation by computer simulations based on a multiple criteria decision making method. This kind of very simple converter may provide high power factor, low input current distortion and even standards compliance. A mathematical description of relevant equations is provided and an experimental study applied to a low power, low output voltage desktop luminaire is presented. Preliminary results show that it is possible to design a high power factor low cost LED driver with no need of electrolytic capacitors, what may confer an extended lifetime to the lighting fixture. Due to the discontinuous nature of LED current, a decrement of 10% in the luminous efficacy of LED elements has been measured. Moreover, the equipment has featured an efficiency of 59%, mainly due to the required use of a low frequency transformer. Similar low frequency and high power factor LED drivers have been also studied and presented here, and are mainly focused to street lighting applications. The module-integrated inverter allows electricity generated by a PV solar panel to be injected into the commercial power grid. This structure provides significant advantages over the structure that employs the combination of multiple panels connected to a large single inverter (central inverter). Among the advantages offered by the module-integrated structure can be highlighted: modularity, allowing the natural parallelism of the systems, increased system reliability, because in case of failure of a module the plant remains powered after all energy is provided by several PV panels and their module-integrated inverters that work independently, and finally, there is the possibility of obtaining the MPPT individually, which is quite interesting in large systems, where shading may occur in only a few panels. The system employed in this work consists in the association of a PV array to a Zeta converter in cascaded with a single phase full-bridge inverter operating synchronized with the power grid at the same frequency. A Zeta converter working in DCM is responsible for the synthesis of a rectified sinusoidal current waveform synchronized with the grid. The CSI is used to invert the current every 180°. In this study three MPPT techniques were examined, namely Constant Voltage, Perturb and Observe and Hill Climbing. A prototype was built using digital signal processing.
