In a federation of psychoanalytic societies this fact prevails. The return of a result to the social environment is accomplished not only by meeting the demands that are made to psychoanalysis, but also by the written record of advances in psychoanalytic theory and in the clinic itself. Capturing the pulsating movement of psychoanalysis and expanding it to the social is a give back and a duty of those who have specific knowledge and want to share their results. The International Forum of Psychoanalysis (IFP), in its 30 years of existence, has shown itself to be this instrument of quality within the psychoanalytic world. In a scenario in which digital publications predominate, due to the difficulty of making paper editions, the IFP (which offers both versions) differs in that it manages to maintain itself as a concrete object in an immediatist and fast-paced era such as the current one. In 1999, as the person responsible for the task of being a regional editor (for South America) of the IFP, I had my first meeting with the editorial board of the journal. This meeting, specifically for this purpose, took place in Amsterdam, the most favorable place for the other participants from Europe. Arriving from the southern part of the Meridional Hemisphere, and having a mother tongue spoken by few countries (without great relevance on the world stage), I had the pleasant surprise of being listened to and respected by the journal’s founding editor, Dr. Jan Stensson, and his coeditor-in-chef, Dr Christer Sjödin. A little frightened by the task and its responsibility, I found in the two Swedish psychoanalysts great human beings with whom I got on well immediately. There were also my colleagues: Valerie Tate Angel (from the USA), Romulo Aguillaume (from Spain), Carlo Bonomi and Marco Conci (from Italy), Michael Ermann (from Germany), Maarit Arpo (from Finland), and the friendly and competent Mona Serenius, the journal’s general manager. After that meeting, we always had others on the occasions of the international fora. Although I already had experience of editingmagazines in Brazil, this new opportunity gradually gave me more resourcefulness to listen to and speak with colleagues from other countries, and to get acquainted with the situation of psychoanalysis in a broader scenario. We used to discuss the subjects of each issue of the journal and also the theme of the upcoming issues. The highlight of this interaction, for me, was the chance for regional editors to be guest editors for special issues of the IFP. I considered this fact a great opportunity to show something of what is done in psychoanalysis in Brazil, where much work and great dedication goes into this relatively new area of human knowledge. The first issue I prepared was Volume 11, 2002, No. 2, whose theme was: “Social Realities and","PeriodicalId":43212,"journal":{"name":"International Forum of Psychoanalysis","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48380525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

My trip to New York was associated with many expectations. As a young analyst at that time, I was particularly curious about meeting foreign colleagues. My expectation of meeting a venerable circle of analysts there was, however, harshly disappointed. I found myself disillusioned in a discouraged and haphazard committee that was desperately looking for prospects for the future. After a successful IFPS forum in Berlin some years before, the society was apparently exhausted and they were looking for someone willing to take the chair and lead the federation through the crisis. There was a lack of spirit that held the federation together, of money to finance future-oriented activities, and of personnel willing to commit to the idea of a liberal international psychoanalysis. Ann Turkel of the William Alanson White Society in New York finally agreed to take responsibility. She received the necessary support from the Executive Committee and from her society. Then we were looking for a brilliant idea for the renewal of the federation. In this situation, the foundation of an international psychoanalytic journal appeared to be an option for the future. It was created in the corridors in front of the meeting and lecture rooms and became a redeeming thought that especially inspired the younger ones among us. And so the International Forum of Psychoanalysis (IFP) was born in a longterm and sometimes arduous process. As far as I can remember, it was the Swedish colleagues from the Society for Holistic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, above all Jan Stensson and Christer Sjödin, who took up the idea of an IFPS journal and persevered despite the many concerns and reservations that were associated with it. They found support from individuals such as Jochen Kemper from Rio de Janeiro and Arne Jemstedt from Stockholm, who helped drive the project forward. I joined in with the intention of using a journal to generate a stronger response to the IFPS’s idea of a liberal international psychoanalysis among the members of the German-speaking societies, among whom there were hardly any recognizable connections. By founding the Germanlanguage magazine Forum der Psychoanalyse, I also had editorial experience that I was able to bring to the project. However, it took years before the idea became reality and the first issue appeared. This is how the IFP came about, and now we are honoring its 30th anniversary with this issue. In retrospect, the journal’s start in the 1980s and 90s has paid off. The IFP has developed into an organ with a broad spectrum of topics from the various regions and continents and, with articles from all psychoanalytic directions, represents the whole wealth of ideas that are represented in the IFPS, its member societies, and beyond. It is a true reflection of the diversity in whic","PeriodicalId":43212,"journal":{"name":"International Forum of Psychoanalysis","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42817656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Jan Stensson, in his first editorial message, reflected on the difficulties involved in the realization of a journal (Stensson, 1992). He recalled that psychoanalysis is rooted in the oral tradition but that the passage from the oral to the written is not impossible. Why then the need to found a journal? Psychoanalytic journals are an expression of the doctrinal positions of the association that founds them. They often begin with a justification, almost always of a political nature. The change from the Internationale Zeitschrift für ärztliche Psychoanalyse to the International Journal of Psychoanalysis was based above all on the strength of English-speaking institutions and not only on the predominance of the English language, as is the case today. There was also another justification of greater interest: to defend the purity of psychoanalysis. The struggles taking place within and outside the institution were transferred to the new journal. Erich Fromm – one of the founders of the IFPS – and Jacques Lacan are good examples of the exclusion of two authors who did not adapt to this doctrinal purity. The IFP is marked by the founding spirit of the IFPS. A spirit that did not imply a defense of doctrinal purity, but one of an openness which broke with the narrow assumptions that then characterized other psychoanalytic groups. Today it would be inconceivable for us to understand the expulsion of a member of our societies because of their theoretical orientation. And, if we talk about the rejection of an article in a journal, today it has to do not so much with the theoretical proposal it puts forward, but with a lack of expository clarity or other aspects that we could call formal. Some would say that we have gone from a doctrinal-based censorship to a formal-based censorship. It is impossible to deny censorship: authority has a thousand faces. Dante Alighieri, in his Divine Comedy, tells us through the mouth of one of his characters that “men are not made to live like animals but to seek knowledge and virtue” (Alighieri, 2005). This search for knowledge concerns us all and certainly those professionals, like us, who dedicate our efforts to delving into what escapes the conscience of others, what determines their behavior and decisions, what is beyond their reason. Every analyst is a researcher in the most literal sense of the term. Each therapeutic encounter provides us with a possibility of surprise and with it a knowledge that allows the patient a fuller life and us a greater closeness to the unknown. Our work carries with it a responsibility: to disseminate what we have learned, to offer others the possibility of comparing their experiences with ours, and to contrast their doubts and certainties. This dissemination basically involves the presentation of our e","PeriodicalId":43212,"journal":{"name":"International Forum of Psychoanalysis","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47474091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When I think of these rewarding 30 years, the early 1990s come to life. At that time, I shared an office with Jan Stensson. I remember our daily meetings. One of the subjects of our dialogue was the need for an international English-speaking journal, reflecting the spirit of the IFPS, a spirit of freedom and unorthodoxy. However, the plans for a new journal encountered opposition both within the IFPS and within our own group, the Swedish Association for Holistic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. A committee was assigned, with members from different societies to investigate the possibilities of an IFPS journal. Most members of the committee voted against a journal, believing that many journals in their languages, English and German, already existed. Jochen Kemper from Brazil and Jan Stensson from Sweden voted for a new journal. In 1991, the Swedish Association for Holistic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis hosted the IFPS scientific conference in Stockholm. Despite the opposition, the IFPS decided to start a new journal: the International Forum of Psychoanalysis. This was made possible because Jan Stensson had found a publishing company in Sweden that was willing to take the risk of publishing a new journal. This study aimed to describe and summarize the perspectives of experienced psychoanalysts on important aspects of psychoanalysis today. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 62 psychoanalysts. The interview data were processed using a theory-informed thematic analysis. There were 12 macro-themes: important aspects of psychoanalysis, important authors in psychoanalysis today, “contemporary psychoanalysis,” the proliferation of psychoanalytic “schools,” psychoanalytic identity and psychotherapy, psychoanalytic training, the Oedipus complex, dreams, the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and outcome and process research, the relationship between psychoanalysis and research in the neurosciences, empirically validated psychoanalytic concepts, and the marginalization of psychoanalysis.
