This technique is called electrokinetically driven flow. The modeling and simulation of electrokinetic transports of fluid in various typical micro-channel geometries such as T-channel, L-channel, and curved channel were done in this paper using commercial simulation software Coventorwarereg. The study has focused on finding the effects of electroosmotic forces on the micro-scale flow fields, and flow control of electroosmotic flow in micro-geometries including the dispersion of liquid flow in the micro channels of different geometries.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130146135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurement instruments of all kinds have continued to become much smaller, consume less power, and increase in resolution and/or sensitivity. This study proposed a way to detect sleeping postures from data acquired using a tri-axis accelerometer strapped to subject's chest. We defined sleeping postures as five states focusing on basal-surface, which indicates the place of human's body on the ground. An evaluation was performed both manually by a technician and automatically by designed software. Results is that the accelerometer allowed us to accurately classify postures. Changes in posture were detected with a mean error of less than 3 s, which is acceptable for clinical cardiovascular applications.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115692536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially in applications requiring continuous monitoring and high specificity, motion artifact can render a solution infeasible in real world use cases. We believe that the single most important technical challenge that will decide the success of wearable biomedical sensor systems is signal integrity. Principle possibilities to reduce artifact are explained, and some historical and modern examples are given, showing the relevance of this subject. However, still no proper models for artifact exist, nor is there a generalized approach to deal with this problem. This paper intends to call to attention the need for a common understanding in the community for a method of addressing this area objectively, and proposes next steps toward this goal.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127035026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The functions of this system include basic information (electronic records) operation and healthcare information (ECG, Pulse, etc.,) measurement. Comparing with the conventional systems, our system is at a low cost because no special hardware or software is needed, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) or tablet personal computer can be used as the doctor's terminal. The current system is composed with three parts: the measurement system for health information, the server side in doctor's office and the client side for ward doctors. The system has been tested in the experiment and a wireless LAN is used as the transferring condition.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133299483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was reported that although both standards work well for most BP devices, they do not agree with each other in all circumstances. Previous attempts to model the measurement errors as Gaussian could not explain the phenomena. Results of this study indicate that the general t distribution fits better to the BP measurement errors reported in previous literatures and collected from our clinical experiments. Furthermore, the theoretical mapping of the AAMI accuracy criteria and BHS grading system derived from the t distribution model can better reflect the real situations, where some devices can pass the BHS criteria but fail that of the AAMI. Based on this mapping relationship, it is found that current standards work well for devices with error distribution close to Gaussian but they may not be suitable for the newly developed wearable BP measuring devices used in the experiment, where the errors followed a t distribution with a smaller degree of freedom. It is suggested that a statistical measure that takes into account both the probability and the absolute value of the extreme errors could be introduced into the standard in order to better evaluate this kind of wearable, cuffless BP measuring devices.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116300520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design of the device made it a very sensitive, non-invasive, wearable and easy-to-use motion detector. As such, it rapidly became an interesting equipment in wholly different clinical domains like radiotherapy and biomechanics. The new prospects offered by this magnetic motion-sensing solution in various clinical applications are presented and discussed here.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114259539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper a design concept of clothing measuring back postures is presented. The posture detection is based on elongation measurements captured by strain sensitive fibres attached to the undershirt. The feasibility of this approach is shown by reference measurements, which provide a basis to define requirements for textile strain sensors. With these reference measurements, elongations in the range of 20% were measured on the back. The paper is completed by an overview of the state-of-the-art of potential technologies necessary for the proposed design.","PeriodicalId":409380,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd IEEE/EMBS International Summer School on Medical Devices and Biosensors","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134441667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
