Each time a video streaming platform (e.g., YouTube, Dailymotion or Netflix) is requested, the browser loads a web page, setups the video player, then retrieves and renders the requested content. The video streaming transmission is based on the dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) which takes into consideration the underlying network conditions (e.g., delay, loss rate and throughput) and the terminal characteristics (viewport) to select the video resolution to request from the server. We question in this work the efficiency of this transmission in taking into account the terminal characteristics, the viewport in particular, knowing that requesting a resolution exceeding the viewport results in waste of bandwidth. Such bandwidth waste can either save money when the user is on a pay as you go data plane, or steal bandwidth from other users who are in need for it to further improve their Quality of Experience (QoE). To narrow the stats, we present a controlled experimental framework that leverages the YouTube and Dailymotion video players and the Chrome web request API to assess the impact of browser viewport on the observed video resolution pattern [1]–[3]. In a first attempt of kind, we use the observed patterns to quantify the amount of wasted bandwidth. Our data-driven analysis points to high sensitivity of the Dailymotion player toward small viewports (240×144 and 400×225) compared to the YouTube player resulting in 15% and 8 % less bandwidth waste respectively. However, as the users shift toward large viewports, the YouTube player becomes more viewport friendly compared to the Dailymotion player with shows an estimated bandwidth waste of 28%.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"515 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123074423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) aims to face this problem by using multiple spatial channels in Multi-Core Fibers (MCFs) and/or Multi-Mode Fibers (MMFs). SDM promises to increase the total transmission capacity and effectively reduce transmission costs. So, integrated scalable SDM components that can reduce costs by utilizing less hardware should be deployed. SDM efficiency can be enhanced by Jointly-Switching wavelength channels across all spatial channels, using an adapted Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS). In this paper we derive a cost analysis of various SDM network topologies. We consider the number of spatially dimensions, the R-degree of Colorless Directionless Contentionless Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (CDC-ROADMs), the number of spatially integrated transceivers and compute the optimal number of required WSSs. Our cost analysis shows that we can reduce the number of SDM components used, leading to an overall cost reduction of 33% and 58% for an 8-degree and 16-degree network node respectively. As future ROADMs will be available as black boxes, we propose the DCMP, a new Protocol for Dynamic Configuration and Management of SDM backbone ROADM nodes. Finally we study on a topology for a future SDM backbone network of Greece, and perform a detailed cost analysis resulting in a max cost reduction of 13%.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130648753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Networks are continuously witnessing significant transformations that are resulting in new ways to address the deployment of applications and services in a digital society. Major trends like softwarization leveraged by Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Cloud & Edge Computing, and the introduction of new radio techniques have been recently shaping the evolution in the Telecom and ICT industries, today emphasized by the early deployment of 5G networks and services. Other paradigms like the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as real-time constraints for the tactile Internet or smart factories are relevant for the network of the future. Still, security but also bandwidth provisioning plays a major role for networks and services. Networking benefits from the growing introduction of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques that are expected to alleviate complexity and to allow smart and reliable automation of service delivery. Those topics are well reflected in the program of NoF 2020.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131284681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several QoS requirements such as delay and availability impose constraints on the controller placement in the network. The problem of guaranteeing ‘five-nines' availability between the controllers in a SDN network is addressed. We consider the problem of controller placement under delay constraints, while assuming a sub-graph of enhanced availability between the controllers. The sub-graph can be upgraded at a given cost, to achieve the desired availability requirements. To solve this problem, we propose a heuristic method to evaluate several controller node sets and the upgrade cost of the sub-graph for enhanced availability. The heuristic includes solving two optimization sub-problems, which are both NP-hard. The computational results show the trade-off between the number of controllers and upgrade cost and show that slightly increasing the number of controllers can lead to a significant reduction in the upgrade cost.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"29 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120887617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, the collected data are of paramount importance especially to optimize resource consumption and to improve the indoor user's comfort. However, the reliability of smart buildings depends on the completeness and the relevance of the collected information, which needs an optimal sensor deployment inside buildings to ensure an efficient coverage of the area of interest. However, this problem has been widely studied in free space, but it became more complex when the sensors positions must take into account in the presence of heterogeneous obstacles. To tackle this problem, ISOD framework built a multiobjective optimization algorithm, exploits BIM database information including the physical properties of the used materials in the obstacles, and deploys dynamically the optimal WSN configuration. The effectiveness of ISOD has been showed on different scenarios and the results showed that ISOD deployments have a maximum coverage with a reliable connectivity.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134158200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, both events are likely to occur simultaneously in military scenarios, in case of which the system can use multilayer control loops to adapt its store-and-forward mechanism. This paper is a part of a wide investigation to evaluate the robustness and solve the related issues of tactical systems. Our architecture implements the store-and-forward mechanism with a hierarchical queuing model of the message, IP packet, and radio buffer. In this study, we want to solve the data overflow in memory -constrained devices such as radio buffer caused due to data outbursts, eventually, leading to packet loss. In order to mitigate radio buffer overflow, we introduce a control point to dequeue the packets from the packet handler to the radio buffer. Our system adds an Inter- Packet- Interval (IPI) to control the admission into the radio buffer. IPI is computed using the nominal link data rate compiled by the radio together with buffer metrics such as the occupancy and threshold. We discuss experimental results from a VHF network suggesting that our cross-layer IPI allows better control of the buffer usage thereby increasing the system robustness to ever-changing link data rates in the network.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121941368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, network coverage is needed and resource sharing is a way to achieve it. Therefore, each provider enforces its own security requirements. Under this scenario, it is necessary to consider security access mechanisms and policy rules, to regulate how interconnections are made between the shared network functions and how to allow specific traffic. The existing models do not address all the needs inherent to the 5G architecture, such as multi-tenancy, multi-domain and multiple security levels. To solve this challenge, this paper defines a novel access control model for 5G, leveraging on the best characteristics of traditional access control models used in operating systems and cloud scenarios. The security properties in our model obey the functional requirements within the 5G system as well as towards the customers. The actions and type of traffic of the system can be specified and enforced via an access control policy. Besides addressing the 5G system, our innovation is general enough to be applied over other types of architectures, proving its scalability and capability to incorporate more security features. In order to provide global coverage using small satellite networks flying in low earth orbit (LEO), a large constellation of at least hundreds of satellites is needed. As LEO satellites can only connect directly to the ground earth station (GES) sporadically, they need to forward data over inter-satellite links (ISLs) to reach the GES. In this paper, we propose a novel self-organising architectural design for small satellite constellations with ISLs, supporting automated commissioning and control of the satellite network. We specifically present an algorithm for autonomous ISL establishment and channel selection, that avoids interference among ISLs of the same satellite.","PeriodicalId":405626,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123266405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
