The recorded variables are corona current, natural electric field, atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature and air humidity. From this large amount of recorded data, 22 thunderstorm events are selected to be analyzed in the present paper. The transition of the measured variables from fair weather- to thunderstorm conditions are presented and discussed. The recorded significant changes in the atmospheric data can be used to develop a thunderstorm predicting algorithm.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115799471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurements were taken using the standard impulse voltage, according to IEC 61730-2. Measurements were taken before and after the voltage stress in order to investigate in which way the module is affected. These results appear in the IV and PI characteristic curves. Subsequently, after a period of six months, the stressed module was compared to a similar non-stressed to find out whether the first regains some of its properties. In the same way the IV and PI curves are quoted. In conclusion the results obtained are evaluated and confirmed by the standards with a view to approach an optimal design of lightning and surge protection systems for photovoltaic installations (PVIs).","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122399897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A methodology for matching data from a Lightning Detection Network (LDN) with to a possible location of attachment using only the reported positions of strokes is proposed. A case study of lightning attachment to a tall structure (Brixton Tower, Johannesburg, South Africa) is used to evaluate of the methodology. Photographs of the lightning attachments are time-correlated with data from the South African Lightning Detection Network (SALDN) and these results are compared with the results of the methodology. It is found that the methodology returns 40% false positive results and further evidence is needed to distinguish the time-correlated matches from the false positive results. The median confidence ellipses provided for each stroke are also investigated but it appears that this does not provide the evidence needed to do this. It is concluded that LDN data can provide corroborating evidence of lightning attachment to a location but cannot be used in isolation.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131706017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unambiguous recommendations are needed for the requirement of type A system or type B system or both systems for a given installation. Specifications of the length of conductors, based on the level of protection, were critically analyzed emphasizing the human risk related issues. Calculations reveal that at Level III and IV, the specified lengths of type A conductors may give step potentials, especially in highly resistive soils that may drive currents through human beings in the vicinity, exceeding lethal energy. Furthermore, specification of the limiting value of resistance for transient grounding systems may lead to hazardous situations as the difference between frequency dependent impedance and low frequency resistance may increase to very high values at Mega Hertz range where lightning energy spectrum has significant amplitude. Covering of a sizable surface area surrounding the grounding conductors with insulation material, is recommended as a practical solution to this issue.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132361729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays coupling ground wire has been applied on some transmission lines in China. However, various setting positions of coupling ground wire have different impact on the lightning protection effects, especially the multi-circuit lines. The paper presents and analyzes the effects of setting coupling ground wire on the center of different cross-arm. The shunt coefficients of tower, ground wires and coupling ground wire, and the coupling coefficient in the condition of various mounting positions are also compared and discussed.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131826567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we analyze the influence of different grounding electrode arrangements on the transient ground potential rise in case of direct lightning strokes. Particularly, we analyze the influence of the integration of the metallic foundation reinforcement with the grounding system. In addition we analyze the influence of long (30 m) vertical electrodes and additional ring electrode. Next, we analyze soil ionization effects. We compute the distribution of the electric field in the earth in time domain (for typical lightning current pulses) looking for the volume within which the magnitude of the electric field is above the critical strength (300 kV/m). Then we look for the possibility to apply a simple formula to account for the soil ionization effects. The parameters in the analysis are varied for low and highly resistive earth and for lightning current pulses related to the first and subsequent return strokes. We apply a rigorous electromagnetic model for frequency dependent analysis and an approximate model to account for soil ionization effects. Both models have been previously validated by comparison with experiments.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132253049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that the frequency dependence of soil parameters is responsible for decreasing the grounding potential rise of electrodes and, thus, their impulse impedance and their impulse coefficient. This effect is more pronounced for high-resistivity soils and typical currents of subsequent strokes.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115843150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is necessary to study the relationship between the characteristics of the upward leaders and operation voltage. This paper presents some simulated experimental results of a combined plane-rod (PR) electrode to conductor air gap of 7 meter length. A current measuring instrument with frequency response of from DC to 6.5MHz was developed and used to measure the leader current. Besides, high speed CCD camera was used to observe the optical phenomenon of the whole process. The 200/2000μs impulse voltage up to 4MV and positive DC voltage up to 800kV was applied to the electrode and conductor respectively. The higher charge per unit in the leader channel and earlier inception time has been found along the higher DC voltage. These results have been compared with those in the gap that only impulse voltage was applied. Finally, the influence of positive DC voltage on the characteristics of upward leaders was discussed.","PeriodicalId":400743,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114952379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
