One of the major components, which degrade under stresses, is the paper insulation of a power transformer. In this research work, analysis of acoustic emission (AE) signal patterns due to the occurrence of partial discharge (PD) has been carried out. In order to characterize the different types of PD sources, seven descriptors or features were extracted from the Short-Time Fourier Transform spectrogram of the AE signals. These descriptors are used to generate the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for three different types of PD sources. From the component planes of the descriptors produced by the SOM map, the analysis of the features was carried out and the best features to represent the AE signal patterns in the Time-Frequency representation were selected.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130127822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The HL and LH subbands coefficients as the features are mapped into the probability space by 2D Generalized Gaussian probability density function (GG-PDF) to achieve preliminary segmentation. The features in PDF are classified into homogenous regions via multilevel thresholding after wavelet de-noising. The edges can be extracted from the segmented images. To verify the accuracy of GG-PDF, 2D bootstrap algorithm is used. In addition, we test our algorithm in noisy environment to check its reliability. Finally the performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on variety of Bordatz textures and some textual images.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"65 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131613753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method uses a robust model of instantaneous visual attention (i.e. “bottom-up”) combined with a pixel probability map derived from the automatic detection of a previously-seen object (task-dependent i.e. “top-down”). The objects to be recognised are parameterised quickly in advance by a viewpoint-invariant spatial distribution of SURF interest-points. The bottom-up and top-down object probability images are fused to produce a task-dependent saliency map. We validate our method using observer eye-tracker data collected under object search-and-count tasking. Our method shows 10% higher overlap with true attention areas under task compared to bottom-up saliency alone. The new combined saliency map is further used to develop a new intelligent compression technique which is an extension of DCT encoding. We demonstrate our technique on surveillance-style footage throughout.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128125634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This extracardiac activity frequently emerges as areas of intense brightness or hotspots, which hamper efforts in automatic MPS quantification. Though it would be favourable to remove the hotspots, their multitudinous appearance and proximity to the heart have made them difficult to be removed. In this paper, we propose an image processing technique to automatically remove the hotspots. Our technique uses the morphological watershed segmentation to delineate the hotspots before they are iteratively removed. The proposed technique has been applied on clinical MPS tomograms in which it has completely removed the hotspots in 90% of the test data. In addition, it has also shown to increase the success rate of an automatic left ventricle detection scheme to 100%.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"38 10S 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115637720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of the existing RT however is only applied to images of size M×M or the M×N images will need to be pre-segmented into M×M sub-images prior to processing. The research presented in this article is aimed at the development of a generalized RT for content-based image retrieval so that it can be applied easily to any images of various sizes. This article focuses on comparing and determining the normalization criteria for Radon transform, which will aid in achieving the aim. The Radon transform normalization criteria sets are compared and evaluated on an image database consisting of 216 images, where the precision and recall and Averaged Normalized Modified Retrieval Rank (ANMRR) are measured.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"1179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123350431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these SUs need to monitor the spectrum continuously to avoid possible interference with the licensed Primary users (PU)s. In order to avoid causing harmful interference to a PU that is in operation, spectrum sensing is needed for the CRs. One of the great challenges of spectrum sensing is to detect the presence of the PU with little information about the channel and the signal transmitted from the PU. Cooperative spectrum sensing has been shown to greatly increase the probability of detecting the PU. Cooperative spectrum sensing refers to the spectrum sensing methods where local spectrum sensing information from multiple SUs are combined for PU detection. Distributed spectrum sensing methods have the potential to increase the spectral estimation reliability and decrease the probability of interference of CRs to primary communications. This paper considers the performance of a distributed Bayesian detection system consisting of N sensors and a fusion center, in which the decision rules of the sensors have been given and the decisions of different sensors are mutually independent conditioned on both hypotheses. Theoretical analysis on the performance of this fusion center is carried out. We obtain the conditions for the fusion center such that achieves the minimum average cost of making a decision for the overall system is smaller than the local risk of each sensor. The performance of our detector is compared to the traditional AND, OR and Majority decision fusion rules and numerical results show that AND, OR and Majority decision fusion rules are the special cases of the Bayesian fusion rule. In addition, we derive a lower bound for the risk of the fusion center for any given priori probability of hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123594610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed algorithm estimates the PSDs of speech and noise of unknown nature and, evaluates the input Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) by solving an over-determined set of equations. No Voice Activity Detection (VAD) or other means of noise spectral estimation such as minimum statistics is used. The pre-calculated codebooks are tree structured for the sake of speed of processing. The Wiener filter is used in the first instance because of its simplicity. A new variant of Parametric Wiener filter whose parameters are controlled by the skewness and kurtosis of the estimated clean speech and noise is also used to further suppress the noise. The results of employing these iterative algorithms are reported and compared for enhancement of noisy speech of different noise types and different input SNRs.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122616575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we develop a robust, computationally low cost, head detection and tracking system. Preferred features are skin colour and edges which serve to complement each other and tend to binary masks. Then these masks are converted to gray-level masks. Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) can efficiently combine these masks to segment current frame of video. Video frame rate of designed system is 4 f/s and is implemented in a driver face analysis context to find position and head pose. The system is used in a constrained environment with a static background and can work in various illuminations. Experimental results show the algorithm's robustness in the cases of extreme movement and large degree rotations. It should be mentioned that the soft computing idea which we introduce here can be implemented in other object's tracking applications.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120964061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reliable font-written OCR's for Latin scripts are readily in use since long. For cursively scripted languages, that are the mother tongues of over one fourth of the world population, such OCR's are however not available at a robust and reliable performance. In this regard, the main challenge is the mandatory connectivity of characters/ligatures (i.e. graphemes) that has to be resolved simultaneously upon the recognition of these graphemes. Among the various approaches tried over decades, Hidden Markov Models (HMM)-based OCR's seem to be the most promising as they capitalize on the ability of HMM decoders to achieve segmentation and recognition simultaneously similar to the widely used HMM-based automatic speech recognition (ASR). Unlike ASR's, what is missing in HMM-based OCR's is the definition of a rigorously founded features vector capable to robustly achieving minimal “font type/size-independent” (omnifont) word error rates comparable to those realized with Latin scripts. Here comes the contribution of this paper that introduces such a sound features vector design, and experimentally shows its superiority in this regard.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121192992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The precision in the identification of QRS complexes is of great importance for on-line maternal heart rate calculation and, will lead to on line fetal heart detection,. During the last century much work has been carried out in this field, using various methods ranging from filtering and threshold methods, through wavelet methods, to neural networks, and others, each of which has different effectiveness and weaknesses. Although their performance is generally good, but, the main weakness is that, they are threshold dependent. In the proposed algorithm a RR moving interval is calculated, based on normal maximum and minimum heart rate (HR). This has the advantage of ensuring that every R-peak is contained between the edges of the moving interval. Thus the effectiveness of this algorithm is that, it is threshold independent, and after every peak detection the RR moving interval is updated to calculate the next peak contained between its edges. The complete algorithm is implemented using MATLAB 7.4. The method is validated using 20 recorded data. The average sensitivity and average positive predictivity of the detection method are 99.05% and 99.8% respectively.","PeriodicalId":400165,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126581924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
