He presented with widespread bruising and tenderness, loose teeth, swollen gums, and anemia. Scurvy was diagnosed, and he showed rapid improvement with vitamin C therapy. Providers who care for individuals who are fed homemade formulas, or who have unusual dietary practices, need to be aware of possible macro- and micronutrient deficiencies.","PeriodicalId":398639,"journal":{"name":"ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121072103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimal nutrition for very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 grams) preterm infants is critical in the neonatal period. With substantial variation in clinical practice, there is limited data on impact of early nutrition on growth and outcomes. Objective. The purpose of this study was to conduct a quality improvement project evaluating growth and clinical outcomes after implementing standardized enteral feeding guidelines for preterm infants. Methods. Evidence based clinical practice feeding guidelines were developed and implemented for VLBW infants in NICU. Primary outcome measures were (1) the rate of early initiation of enteral feeds (< 5 days of life) and (2) growth outcomes as measured by weight and head circumference from birth to discharge. Secondary outcome measures were total TPN days and rate of cholestasis. Retrospective data prior to initiation of guidelines were compared with data from post-implementation period in logistic and linear regression models. Results. Child care menus provide an opportunity to expose children to healthy foods and flavor variety. The current study compared 2 sets of 5-week cycle menus to investigate differences in nutrient content and vegetable variety achieved by transitioning from traditional style menus to made-from-scratch menus. Menus were provided by a San Diego–based nonprofit agency producing food for 29 Head Start facilities. Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare differences in nutrients and vegetable subgroup offerings between menus. Made-from-scratch menus improved the fat profile of child care menus, with reductions in transfat (P ≤ .01) and calories from saturated fat (P = .01) and increases in essential fatty acids (ω-3, P < .01; ω-6, P < .01). Furthermore, made-from-scratch menus improved the fiber (from 6.8 ± 2.0 to 9.5 ± 2.1 g P < .001) and potassium (from 1202.8 ± 141.7 to 1446.5 ± 144.7 mg, P < .001) content in the context of dietary...","PeriodicalId":398639,"journal":{"name":"ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130910432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Breastfeeding has been shown to have an overall impact on the health and well-being of mothers and infants. Statistically, national and state breastfeeding rates are below the Healthy People 2020 target goals. A review of literature concluded that lactation support increased the overall rates of breastfeeding throughout the first year of life. The objectives of this quality improvement project were to increase the rates of breastfeeding at 2 weeks and 2 months of age by providing lactation support to the mother–infant dyad, to provide education for health care providers on the evidence-based recommendation for lactation support, and implement the program as standard of care. Methods. The quality improvement project used a retrospective chart review method to collect data. Data collection was done on the provision of lactation support for infants with the ICD-9 code of newborn feeding issues (779.31). Feeding methods were documented at 2 weeks and 2 months of age.
