Our purpose is to develop a new vision-based human interface technology that uses face orientation to interact with humans. Our algorithm samples a range of skin colors and dynamically updates feature templates from the current input image. In addition, we estimate face orientation from the relationship between the detected facial features' positions. As a result, our system determined the correct location of both the eyes and the mouth for all four subjects more than 94% of the time.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. ModuleC reverses the PCMCIA (PC card) paradigm and places the computing and networking platform on a small form factor card that externally connects to peripherals and appliances. ModuleC-equipped information appliances provide the ability to move information both within the home, e.g., between different appliances, and between the home and the outside world. This connectivity not only provides a means for exchanging application-specific information-it also provides a vehicle for replacing and upgrading the appliance software. Essentially, this platform is a footing part way between the PC ($1000-$2000) and the embedded computer ($1-S10); in particular, it brings to the embedded environment the network access and dynamic programmability features of the PC.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. An NTSC TV signal and an audio signal can easily be transmitted to the receiver at the same time, since the transmission rate is kept unchanged due to the insertion of the digital audio signal into the horizontal sync pulse of the digital NTSC TV signal. The proposed system has three features. Firstly, the system could give satisfactory picture quality enough to operate consumer-use visual appliances even though the quality of the reproduced pictures is lower than that of the normal digital NTSC TV picture codes obtained at a sampling frequency of 4.00/spl times/fsc with a quantizing level of 8 bits. Secondly, the system can satisfactorily transmit NTSC TV picture codes at a low transmission rate of 50 Mbps even if such an advanced compression technique as MPEG 2 has not been used. Thirdly, the system is used for transmission of the digital audio signals which are inserted into the horizontal sync pulse of the digital NTSC TV signal. A combination of edge-emitting LEDs (ELEDs) and single-mode (SM) optical fibers enable the system to easily transmit a digital NTSC TV picture signal together with digital audio signals over the distance of 10 km through the SM optical fibers.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. The use of capacitive coupling technology allows wireless pointing devices to be reliable and do not require any battery. The proposed pointing device uses capacitive coupling technology to detect both the x and y position of the mouse/digitizer and also if any of the buttons were pressed. Detail analysis of the capacitive coupling signals and its performance in both the time and frequency domains were discussed. The proposed pointing device was built and implemented. The experimental results showed potential for commercialization of the wireless pointing device and its robustness.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. The firmware, executed by a single microcontroller, is also presented. The panel specifications, performance and the system configuration are described. The display uses a newly developed 42-inch diagonal DC-type PDP (plasma display panel) with 1920/spl times/1035 display cells. To reduce dynamic false contours, the most serious impairment for picture quality of PDP displays, a new panel driving method and signal processing have been developed. As a result, high picture quality is obtained not only for still images but also for moving images. Implementation as a practical HDTV receiver is described. The display paves the way for a commercial wall-mounted 1125/60 HDTV receiver.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. This system works with educational systems that are located at multiple campuses for delivering lectures with the aid of a surveillance system. This distance education system consists of multiple functions such as white-board, multiple opposition monitoring, audio support, tool box which is based on the user-preference, and an additional environmental technique. This system has provides session management, access control functions, network control and media control. This system also provides classrooms monitoring especially, for the purpose of watching each classroom. The surveillance system transfers the status of each classroom to the host site by decreasing the load of sending video data. It also has the function of diminishing the additional cost of communication when watching and the empty classroom for monitoring at night. Using a guarding system means protects the real estate and can prevent possible loss of lives resulting from an accident, without additional costs. The system is one of the open university systems which is now a hot issue involving the use of multimedia on the network for the end-users. It is implemented on the cyberspace to provide the transmission of information between the host site and remote site.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97.
