The ultimate aim is to answer the larger question of how to understand Taiwan's politics from the perspective of democratic theory. Two of the attributes that a true democracy must have are: (1) an opposition party loyal to the common weal of society, as opposed to the party's own egoistic interests; and (2) an independent free media. My study fails to find either in Taiwan under the shadows of DPP's maneuverings.","PeriodicalId":392598,"journal":{"name":"Asian Affairs: An American Review","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117195864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find that the emergence of an authoritarian-libertarian value cleavage has played an important, if not vital, role in shifting mass political attitudes and in enhancing the propensity to engage in political action from the authoritarian rule, to the democratic transition, and to the period of democratic consolidation. We also empirically uncover our authoritarian-libertarian value scale is related to increasing levels of leftist reform-oriented attitudes, whereas age has become less important to Koreans in defining their orientations to political protest, especially during the period of democratic consolidation.","PeriodicalId":392598,"journal":{"name":"Asian Affairs: An American Review","volume":"8 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129177194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there has been surprisingly little systematic analysis of their content and influence. This article shows that, although the televangelists featured on the Pakistani television channels present some of the most conservative views regarding the role of women and religious minorities in society and the role of Islam in governance, Pakistani television is an arena of contestation. The impact of the lively debates between televangelists on young viewers—over whom the ideological battles are being waged—is mixed. Findings from an original survey of Pakistani students and political activists suggest that young people in Pakistan watch religious shows only occasionally. Those that do, however, take them seriously. What leads young people to consume religion on television is a sense of social responsibility: that they are doing it not just for themselves, but also—and perhaps more importantly—for others, be it their families or communities.","PeriodicalId":392598,"journal":{"name":"Asian Affairs: An American Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117096707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that the United States, the world's most powerful nation, and China, a rising power, are heading toward cooperation rather than confrontation. In spite of differences between them, the United States and China have become highly interdependent and have sought to increase cooperation in various realms, namely economics, strategic issues (climate change, non-proliferation, and counterterrorism), education, and tourism. They will seek to avoid a mighty struggle for influence and make an effort to strengthen mutual interests and sector-to-sector cooperation. It is concluded in this essay that the United States and China can cooperate for the sake of their own national interests, and their cooperation is what the world appeals for. The analysis of the U.S.-and-China relations in this essay is based on the data obtainable from the United States and Chinese official bodies and on scholarly literature.","PeriodicalId":392598,"journal":{"name":"Asian Affairs: An American Review","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116730226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book can be criticized. First, in focusing on military defections, it underestimates the role of socio-cultural forces that came to spearhead political change like the Catholic Church in the Philippines and Islamic nationalist groups in Indonesia. Second, the section on Burma/Myanmar needs more elaboration. One could argue that the regime’s purges were designed to maintain the increasingly personalized control of Than Shwe. Third, the book seemingly assumes that militaries only defect to support Asian protest movements opposed to personalized authoritarian regimes. What about Thailand (2006, 2014) when the military defected from power-sharing institutions under civilian rule, staging coups in support of popular protests opposed to the continuation of a democratically elected government? Nevertheless, as a book dismissing notions that militaries in Asia are simply mechanisms of elites, Lee’s work should be read by anyone seeking to understand why they sometimes cohere to support regimes and other times fracture to oust them.","PeriodicalId":392598,"journal":{"name":"Asian Affairs: An American Review","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114394993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author, Terence Lee, is assistant professor of political science at the National University of Singapore and a noted scholar on civil-military relations in Asia. Lee uses two cases of military defection from supporting regimes (Philippines 1986, Indonesia 1998) and two cases of military defense of the state (China 1989, Burma/Myanmar 2007) to support his thesis. He argues that personalistic forms of authoritarian rule tend to lead to military fissures that become ripe for military defection when popular protests erupt. The defectors will support regime change if they can come to an agreement with leaders of the protests. On the other hand, where authoritarian regimes are organized through power-sharing mechanisms that severely reduce personalism, military defection during popular protests becomes less likely (189). In Chapter 1, Lee argues that in the literature on authoritarian transition, the role of military behavior itself in ensuring or preventing moves toward political change has been under-explored. His study fills this void. Chapter 2 presents a theoretical framework that highlights the importance of agencydetermined structure, drawing from “new institutionalism” political science literature (22). To engender elite loyalty, many tyrannies establish institutions that deliver balanced levels of carrots and sticks to the regime’s stakeholders. These power-sharing institutions provide information about the actions of regime stakeholders while offering routines designed to diminish moral hazard problems. The 14 chapters include a medley of lectures and articles, some of which represent the genesis of his books Castes of Mind, The Hollow Crown, and The Scandal of Empire. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of South Asia, as well as those interested in the intersections of history and anthropology. Dirks presents a fascinating set of ruminations on historical and contemporary forms of knowledge/power that, although different in content, have clear commonalities in form. The broad historical periods the book material is situated amidst are the rise and decline of the British Empire and the subsequent rise of the U.S. Empire. Within these historical episodes, Dirks presents snapshots of different periods of knowledge production: the emergence of the colonial census in the late 19th century, writings about caste at the turn of the 20th century, and others discussed below. In Part I (“Autobiography”), Dirks recounts his experiences pursuing research in colonial archives and his efforts to work at the intersection of anthropology and history. Dirks describes realizing through his archival research that the “primary” archival material was always already infused by historical discourse and political motives, in some cases, as with the writings of the British surveyor-general Colin Mackenzie, in surprisingly selfreflective ways.
