This paper deals with the extension to satellite systems of the advanced networking concepts which are emerging in the third generation framework. In particular, it focuses on the basic functional areas for mobile satellite systems, namely the cell and the location area. It is worth stressing that proper definitions of the satellite cell and satellite location area concepts, as well as an appropriate design of the satellite cell and satellite location area layouts, are essential, since the mobility procedures (cell reselection, paging, localization, handover) make systematic reference to these concepts. The topics exposed in this paper are applicable to any satellite system regardless of the orbit type (ranging from geostationary (GEO) to low Earth orbits (LEO)), the satellite spot-beam arrangement, the on-board switching capabilities (ranging from transparent payloads with reduced switching capabilities, to satellite systems provided with on-board processing capabilities (OBP) and inter-satellite link) and the access technique.","PeriodicalId":389634,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE 47th Vehicular Technology Conference. The basic idea is to utilize the (soft) results of a decoding process to estimate and predict the channel coefficients of a frequency selective fading channel. The symbolwise soft-output of the decoder is treated as a reliability of the decoder decision. In our proposed multi-stage method, the replica and the residual signal are sent to the next stage. In this method, the interference by other paths of an assigned user is very small because the replica is combined after the correlation detection. In order to estimate each radio channel accurately, we propose the correction method of the radio channel estimation by adaptive signal processing. Some of them are directed retry, reuse partitioning and channel borrowing. Here, the capacity of each is derived for a GSM system, and they are compared with each other. In general, the capacity increase of each technique is dependent on system-specific parameters. For our approach, we built up a physical layer link simulation in which the frequency dependence of the transmission channel is modelled taking the frequency correlation of the radio channel into account. This link is fed with interference information burst by burst which is derived from an attached system simulation to cope the real interference situation in a cellular network with FH. The paper gives an introduction to our simulating approach for a GSM system and presents computed simulation results. It is desirable that computer simulations predict the propagation for various basestation configurations in order to reduce trial installations and ensure overall coverage. In the new method described in this paper the environment is covered by a net of coupling channels that contain the propagating electromagnetic waves. After some channels are fed with energy by transmitters, all power flows within the channels can be calculated from the solution of a very sparse linear system of equations. This energy is received by test receivers positioned on a background grid. It turns out that the main numeric work does not depend on the transmitter and receiver positions. Trials with various transmitter and receiver positions can be carried out very fast reusing the coupling matrix calculated only once. The transmitter location was on the top floor near an outside window with a view to nearby campus buildings. Measured power delay profiles (PDPs) were processed to identify the individual rays, within the resolution of the sounder. The distribution of RMS delay spreads are found to be quite different for the transmitter floor, compared with the lower floors, where delay spreads are up to 8 times as large. The distributions of the number of rays per PDP for different thresholds are given for each floor, and the distribution of rays in time and amplitude bins is also given. A measurement based statistical model is investigated, and used to generate Monte Carlo simulations of many PDPs. In IS-95 systems, closed loop power control on the reverse link comprises two parts; an inner loop and outer loop. The inner loop aids the mobile in reaching its current signal to interference ratio (SIR) target through a sequence of power up/down commands. The outer loop dynamically adjusts the target SIR so that adequate performance in terms of frame error rate (FER), the true quality measure, is achieved. The propagation conditions for different users are different. Hence, the effectiveness of the inner loop is not the same for all users. In some cases, it always comes close to the target, while in others the variability could be quite significant. The outer loop compensates for such variability by adjusting the SIR targets so that all users obtain the same performance in terms of error rate. In this work, the algorithm used for the outer loop is described. A model for the outer loop is developed and analyzed. The analytical model enables sensitivity study of the algorithm to choice of parameters. Results indicate that the target values to be set are strongly dependent on the effectiveness of the inner loop. Thus, a fixed target strategy designed for the worst case, would be inefficient and would diminish system capacity.","PeriodicalId":389634,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE 47th Vehicular Technology Conference.
