Wong","doi":"10.1109/HICSS.1989.49249","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/HICSS.1989.49249","url":null,"abstract":"The authors propose a novel interactive procedure for performing decision analysis, called robust interactive decision-analysis (RID), which avoids the difficulties in measuring utility and state probability information associated with traditional decision-tree analysis. Instead, the RID method permits a decision-maker to voluntarily and interactively express strong (namely, sure) binary preference for actions, partial decision functions, and full decision functions, and only imprecise probability and utility function assessments. These inputs serve as operators to prune the event probability space and decision space until an optimal choice strategy is obtained. Conceptually, the operation of the RID method can be regarded as a state-space pruning system and the computer implementation of the RID methodology can be viewed as a decision support system. The authors present an analysis of semantic modeling components for the purpose of integrating disparate databases for supporting composite access. A set of primitives and constructs of semantic data models are identified and analyzed. These can provide a basis for a reasonable comparison and integration of different semantic data models. The ability to access disparate databases for composite queries by a unified view of relevant data objects from different databases is practical. The approach used was to integrate the Business Management Laboratory/Systems Laboratory for Information Management (BML/SLIM) and the Interactive Financial Planning System/Optimum (IFPS/Optimum) in a semester-long course on decision support and expert systems. Eight groups of three second-year MBA students participated for a series of three trial decisions and 12 'real' decisions with the conceptual goal of optimizing the firm's operations. The research method was a complex case-study approach modified to fit a classroom situation. A technique called interdatabase instance identification is presented. It uses a combination of database management systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Common attributes in the disparate databases are applied first to reduce the number of potential candidates for the same instance. Other attributes in these databases, auxiliary databases, and inferencing rules are utilized to identify the same instance. An object-oriented architecture for the product and process design phases of CIM is then proposed. A scenario for simulating the design process is described. A survey primarily of chief executive officers and vice presidents of 30 small manufacturing companies in a tristate region of the Midwest USA was conducted to determine the role that managerial networking knowledge has on (1) the overall number of technologies that a firm introduces and (2) the success rate of technology introduction as measured through usage and overall satisfaction. A mathematical model is constructed and used to analyze the effect of networking knowledge on the probability that an appropriate technology is chosen and used to increase the firm's value. He compares four recent GDSS experiments, each conducted at a different university using a different system, to illustrate the differences that exist between design philosophies. The results suggested that GDSSs should not be thought of as a single class of systems.
