In this work, a mathematical model of the duct air heating system containing resistive heating element has been developed for simulation study, by considering one dimensional forced convective heat transport phenomena. Then a Continuous Time (CT) model identification technique based on Instrumental Variation (IV) approach has been applied to the actual duct air heating process, in order to identify the model parameters. The model was intended to evaluate dynamic changes in outlet air temperature corresponds to changes in current through the heating coils, air flow velocity and ambient temperature. The proposed mathematical model has been validated by a set of simulated models obtained from the experimental data collected from the actual setup, involving duct air heating under open loop conditions. The obtained responses of the mathematical model as well as identified system were found to be closely correlated with the experimental responses.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130428100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting PID controller reduces the required control effort while guaranteeing that pre-defined design specifications like settling time and damping ratio are achieved in the response. For this purpose a subset of the complex plane corresponding to the design specifications is mapped onto a stability region in the coefficient space of the characteristic polynomial. This stability region in the polynomial coefficient space defines an LMI which is used as a constraint in minimizing the PID gains of the controller. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated through case studies with steam and hydraulic units.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132184944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The torque and the speed at the crankshaft of the engine must be tracked simultaneously to simulate the operation of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle. Single-input single-output proportional-integral-controllers are usually used to this end. Additional limitations have been introduced in the Engine Control Unit to meet the continuously strengthened emission levels. Especially, for new engines these limitations lead to significant overshoots in the torque tracking which have to be prevented in any case. The limitations are studied and the impacts to the tracking are analyzed in this paper. The existing proportional-integral-controller is extended based on this analysis. In particular, the controller parameters are scheduled with respect to the change of the torque reference and the tracking error. No model of the plant is required for controller design, the controller parameters can be tuned quickly and easily during the set-up of a test bench. Measurements on a test bench equipped with a passenger car Diesel engine confirm the improvements compared to the industrial standard.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132525184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design methodology uses reduced first order plus delay time (FOPDT) model of system. Based on required overshoot and settling time the controller parameters are computed using CRA method. To demonstrate the performance and stability of controller simulation examples are presented. To indicate the robustness of the controller the 20% uncertainty is added to the system model and controller performance is evaluated. To show the real life applicability of the proposed controller a real life flow control system is used for the demonstration. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with a PID controller in the literature.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"222 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131882013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study models for Compound and Drop-Tail in the limiting regime of small router buffers, with smooth and with bursty traffic. We conduct a systematic local stability and local Hopf bifurcation analysis of the underlying non-linear, time-delayed, fluid models. The stability analysis allows us to capture relationships between protocol and network parameters to ensure stability in high bandwidth-delay environments. In particular, we exhibit that even minor variations in router buffer sizes, in a small buffer regime, can lead to Hopf induced limit cycles in the queue size. Limit cycles in the queue size may hurt end-to-end network performance and should, if possible, be avoided. Applying Poincaré normal forms and the center manifold analysis, we explicitly show that the Hopf bifurcation is supercritical. Thus loss of local stability would give rise to limit cycles, which are also proved to be asymptotically orbitally stable. The analytical results are corroborated by packet-level simulations which are conducted in a network simulator. Some design guidelines to ensure the stability of, and low-latency in, highspeed communication networks are also provided.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129333243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Output feedback active suspension is designed based on a half-car model. Good ride comfort is achieved by minimizing the H2 norm from disturbances of the road to the vertical acceleration and the pitch acceleration of the car, while safety constraints such as normalized suspension dynamic travels, static/dynamic load ratios and normalized actuator pressures are guaranteed by generalized H2 norm. The 15 degree-of-freedom full-car model and left and right controllers are formed a closed-loop system. The simulation result of the full car shows that the active suspension can greatly reduce the vertical acceleration, pitch acceleration and roll acceleration as well as satisfy all constraints.","PeriodicalId":379739,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA)","volume":"286 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124247376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Lyapunov function and singularly perturbed techniques are used to develop the learning procedure for the hidden layers and output layers of the dynamic neural networks model. Novel correction terms are proposed in the learning algorithm to guarantee bounded tracking errors and bounded weights.
