We employ beacon stuffing method for a device to announce its existence in its neighborhood by broadcasting beacons stuffed with useful information in the field of SSID to remote devices. This method can allow a device to discover multiple devices and their running applications without performing connection establishment attempt while limiting the communication for device discovery only on MAC layer. In order to enhance energy efficiency, we also develop a score-based scanning schedule for device discovery operation. Once the neighbor is discovered, we present a connection establishment scheme between peers. We implement our proposed scheme on HP IPAQ 910 mobile phone equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Extensive experiments have been carried out to evaluate our approach. The experiment results show that our approach can achieve high energy efficiency and satisfactory peer connection speed and quality.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125212868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work aims to use gait measurements from everyday living environments to estimate risk of falling and enable improved interventions. For this purpose, we consider the use of low-cost pulse-Doppler range control radar. These radars can continuously acquire data during normal activity of a person in night and day conditions and even in the presence of obstructing furniture. A short-time Fourier transform of the radar data reveals unique Doppler signatures from the torso motion and the leg swings. Two algorithms that can extract these features from the radar spectrogram are proposed in this study for estimating gait velocity and stride durations. The performance of the proposed radar system is evaluated with experimental data, which consists of 9 different walk types and a total of 27 separate tests. A high accuracy motion-capture camera system has also been used to acquire data simultaneously with the radar and provides the ground truth reference. Results indicate that the proposed radar system is a viable candidate for gait characterization and can be used to accurately track mean gait velocity, mean stride duration and stride duration variability. The gait velocity variability can also be estimated but with relatively larger error levels.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114661906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although knowledge of location is very desirable, in many mobile applications excessive GPS sampling is very energy taxing thus posing a barrier to application sustainability. To mitigate this problem, in this paper we examine how to reduce GPS sensing redundancies by extracting the state of a person and using it to drive GPS sampling on mobile phones. Using a GPS dataset we first describe how to extract the spatio-temporal states of the user. We then use the knowledge of the user's state to reduce GPS sampling rate, helping to make mobile applications more sustainable.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114155319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These data come from a variety of sensor sources, artificial intelligence algorithms and human feedback. Building tools that are easily configured, rapidly developed and capable of communicating with both real time and historical data is ever challenging. This work introduces PyViz, a smart home-focused, middle-ware enabled, interactive interface. PyViz is the result of several years of testing and development in a large smart home research project. During its development, issues of configuration, ease of use and adaptability have been explored and overcome. The demonstration of this tool hopes to enlighten the audience about the facets of user interfaces, network agents and smart home complexity.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131299464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By quantifying the QoI benefit the tasks receive in relation to the level of QoI they request as the QoI satisfaction index), we propose a QoI-aware energy-management scheme to distributedly decide the participating state of each sensor. Specifically, by using the mathematical framework of the Gur Game, we propose a novel pay-off structure taking into account the QoI and the energy consumption. We finally evaluate the proposed scheme under an event occurrence detection scenario, where the proposed scheme successfully guarantees less than 7% QoI outage, saves 80% of the energy reserve if compared with the lower bound solution, and achieves the suboptimum with only 4% gap if compared with optimal solution.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129144463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiple approaches have been proposed to address the problem of interruption by calculating cost of interruption. The cost of interruption (COI) gives as a measure the probabilistic value of harmfulness of an inopportune interruption. Bayesian Inference stands atop among the models that have been applied to calculate this COI. However Bayesian inference based models suffer from not being able to model context accurately in situations where priori, conditional probabilities and uncertainties exist while utilizing context information. Hence, this paper introduces Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence to model COI. Along the way, we also identify different contexts necessary for interruption management applications. We also show an illustrative example of a mobile interruption management application where the Dempster-Shafer theory is used to get a better measurement of whether to interrupt or not.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126525196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Queries in these dynamic networks come in two forms: snapshot queries and continuous queries. The former executes through the network and returns values that satisfy the query criteria at a particular instant in time. The latter expects a result that is updated over time to reflect changes in the system. The fidelity, or quality, of the results of these queries can be significantly impacted by the unpredictability of the dynamic network; as the query is distributed and executed, changes that occur due to network and environmental dynamics can cause the query to miss potential results or to report inconsistent information. Our previous work has shown how we can provide semantically meaningful statements about the fidelity, or quality, of the result of a snapshot query in a dynamic networked environment. In this paper, we demonstrate how this fidelity can also be used to adapt a continuous query's processing to make its execution best match the conditions in the underlying dynamic environment.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128984178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such context sensitive learning is not new and can be observed in many different areas. The increasing availability of mobile devices and network access opens up new possibilities for providing context aware support for such learning scenarios. Related work focuses mainly on supporting the learner by delivering context aware learning content and by appropriately adapting the learning media to the limited viewing capabilities of their mobile devices. The learning content provided is dependent on the context of the learner e.g. the learner's current location. In this paper, we argue the need for providing context aware support for authors of learning content. We present an extension of docendo, an open learning content authoring and management platform, to support teachers while creating location based learning material for field trips. An important new feature is the automatic mapping of the location of the author to the learning resources collected by the author.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117335118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

User mobility plays a fundamental role in selection of intermediate relays for multi-hop communication [2]. Current schemes do not take into account the effect of power law distribution of inter-contact times, flight lengths and pause duration between flights that are shown to be statistically significant in real traces [3]. We analyze how these properties can be utilized for forwarding data and composition of services available at devices in an open environment (parks, malls, streets in a city etc.) where citizens interact. Contributions of this dissertation include: i) an analytical model to infer user's location over time; ii) a distributed algorithm with low overhead and complexity to infer network topology; iii) a scheme for efficient route discovery between mobile users; and iv) a scheme for scheduling requests to compose services available across the network to provide enhanced functionality in minimal time. Initial simulations on simple forwarding in real environments show improved delivery ratios and reduced delays in comparison to existing schemes.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129708606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
