Some scientists believe, even aggressively, that new research makes out of date any reference to mind, self, will, or consciousness as explanatory categories in their own right. The persistent use of these terms to describe states or realities, these scientists suggest, shows the regrettable power of habit and convention in everyday psychology. They would find strange or alien the idea that social science and history are essential sources of knowledge about ourselves, independent of the natural sciences. Perhaps I exaggerate. But many natural scientists would surely think that intellectual history, however interesting, is marginal to the project of understanding human nature.","PeriodicalId":360014,"journal":{"name":"Intellectual News","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128824658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How does something end? Or, to reverse the question, how does something begin? If one were to explore two conceptual abstractions one would find that neither the theory of general relativity, nor the social sciences have answers; Einstein reduced those two time-related questions into an idea of singularity. He said that the universe started and now expands. Now we know this itinerary as leading us from big bang to black hole. Of course, it is impossible not to imagine a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ for those singularities; there should be a before of a situation and an after of it. This idea of singularity, and the impossibility of detecting a zero point does not only concern the physical sciences.","PeriodicalId":360014,"journal":{"name":"Intellectual News","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125633111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
