Furthermore the velocity dependent dielectric integrity of such an arrangement is characteristically different for sustained and impulse electric stress[2-4]. Liquid SF6 at ∼350 psi and room temperature has a Kerr constant on the order of 10−15 m/V2 for light at the free space wavelength of 633nm, which is comparable to values reported for transformer oil, polyethylene, and PMMA. The Kerr constant of gaseous SF6 is measured to strongly decrease with density. Electric field measurements between coaxial cylindrical electrodes are described where the inner cylinder is entirely supported by a half round cylinder of PMMA. An internal discharge pulse measurement system which could analyze the distribution of the discharge according to each phase area of the applied voltage (AC 50Hz) was developed. The system's features were as follows. A half cycle of the applied voltage starting from the negative peak and ending at the positive peak was divided into nine equal phase areas. Damon","doi":"10.1109/CEIDP.1986.7726424","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CEIDP.1986.7726424","url":null,"abstract":"In a recent paper [1] the use of measurements of thermally stimulated currents (TSC) to study the annealing of a polyethylene/ionomer blend was reported. TSC's for this blend changed considerably in several days of combined thermal and voltage aging at 70°C and +48 kV/cm. No change in the TSC's were observed in pure polyethylene. Further characterization of the blends was done using thermal analysis and microscopy. The thermal and mechanical characteristics of the blends were observed to change for up to two weeks of annealing. After two weeks, further annealing produced only minor changes. Two distinct melting endotherms developed in the annealing and correspondingly morphological changes were observed microscopically in the cryofracture surfaces. This may indicate that the ionic component is one of the controlling factors in the TSC characteristics of this blend, because the ionomer, one component of the blend, has the ionic phases which exist as ionic multiplets and/or clusters [2] and the ionic phases may modify the internal field profile upon poling at high electric field. The effect of distance between the point and plane electrodes, as well as the effect of discharge current, on the mass spectra has been investigated. A most important observation was the presence of cluster ions CO<inf>3</inf><sup>−</sup>·(H<inf>2</inf>O). Other ions were also found mostly in cluster forms. An unknown cluster ion having e/m = 126 was found, in agreement with earlier reported experiments (de Vries, et. al.). The increase of electrode gap distance caused a reduction of O<inf>3</inf><sup>−</sup>·(H<inf>2</inf>O). groups and an increase of O<inf>3</inf><sup>−</sup>·(H<inf>2</inf>O)<inf>i</inf> groups of ions as Observed in the mass-spectra. In general, the open-circuit photovoltage in photovoltaic devices is much smaller than the potential difference across the energy gap of the materials if the mechanism responsible for the photovoltaic effects is due either to Schottky barrier, or to p-n junction or p-i-n structure. However, some materials in thin film form exhibit a high open-circuit photovoltage when exposed to intense light and in some cases the photovoltage can be much large than the potential difference across the energy gap(6). In the studies of photoelectric effects in polymers most work is concentrated on photo-conduction, and comparatively little has been reported on photovoltaic effects. Recently we have observed some anomalous photoelectric phenomena in polyethylene films without and with silicon incorporation. Some of the current interest in the SEE is generated by the importance of the electron multiplication process in the surface flashover of insulators in high voltage equipment [2]. Measurement of the SEE on the surface of dielectrics is difficult and only a few reports exist in the literature [3]. The major experimental problem is the charging which occurs on the dielectric surface when the SEE coefficient is not equal to one. This problem has been overcome by some experimenters by using such thin films of the dielectric that charge deposited on the surface would leak off rapidly through the material in spite of the high resistivity [4]. This approach is suitable for investigating the fundamental properties of materials but may not be relevant to the properties of, a commercially produced material from which an insulator is produced. This effort was based on the use of an oscillating electric field to impose a time-varying macroscopic polarization on a system by attempting to force the alignment of the permanent dipoles associated with the molecules under investigation. The real part of the dielectric permittivity ε' is proportional to the nature (i.e., physical size) and number density of the permanent dipoles responding in the system. For voltage ramps of msec, a homogeneous space charge cloud grows instantaneously if Vc, the voltage at which F = Fc, is surpassed. As a consequence, F will never be exceeded: we deal with field limiting space charge (FLSC model of ref. 1+2). Within our model, the microscopic physical interpretation of Fc is the field at which charge carriers change from very low, trap-controlled mobility to a high mobility [1,2]. In order to test experimentally the concept of injection of mobile carriers and concomitant formation of a homogeneous space charge zone around a point of field enhancement, a needle-plate geometry was chosen.
