The synthesised powders were processed, dry pressed, and sintered for 3 h at temperatures ranging from 1550 to 1625°C. The sintered pellets were then characterised in terms of phase (XRD), microstructure (SEM), relative density, apparent porosity, water absorption, hardness, three point bend strength, and fracture toughness. The XRD studies revealed that ZrO2 was present in tetragonal form in the case of combustion synthesised powders (CSP), whereas in powders obtained by solid state reaction (SSP) it was present in the monoclinic form. This study also revealed that the addition of ZrO2 improved the mechanical properties of sintered MgAl2O4 samples: 20 wt-%ZrO2-MgAl2O4 composites prepared from CSPs and conventional SSPs and sintered at 1625°C for 3 h had fracture toughness of 5·96 and 4·33 MPa m1/2 and three point bend strength of 269 and 98 MPa respectively. Higher sintered density, the presence of tetragonal zirconia as a major phase, and the finer microstructure are probably responsible for the superior mechanical properties exhibited by sintered CSP materials as compared with the sintered SSPs.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117057158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Al2O3/Y-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP) functionally graded composites of tubular shape were successfully coated with a two layer coating comprising porous alumina and dense reaction bonded mullite layers. The dual layer coating structure was designed to eliminate the numerous cracks caused by volume shrinkage during sintering of the individual EPD formed layers. In another example, mullite fibre reinforced mullite matrix composites were coated with a thin layer of nanosized silica particles using EPD. The aim was to achieve a compressive residual stress field in the silica layer on cooling from sintering temperature, in order to increase composite fracture strength and toughness. The EPD technique proved to be a reliable method for rapid preparation of single layer and multilayer ceramic coatings with reproducible thickness and microstructure on ceramic composite substrates.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121252374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After calcination of the precipitates at 800°C, pure BaTiO3 was formed in samples prepared from oxalic solutions with pH in the range 5-7, and the powders obtained exhibited spherical shape with a size range of 5-10 μm. In contrast, small particles (around 0·1 μm) with Ti enriched phases (BaTi3O7, BaTi4O9) were produced at pH 1, and BaCO3 with irregular shape appeared at pH 10. The phases and morphologies of the calcined powders markedly influenced the sintering behaviour and dielectric properties of BaTiO3. After sintering at 1350°C, densified ceramics with high dielectric constants were derived from the calcined powders containing pure BaTiO3 phase. These results show that close control of the pH of the oxalic solutions is required to produce BaTiO3 powders with high sinterability and high dielectric constant.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124352824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increase in optical density is related to the number and size of pigment particles, which are well dispersed in the glass. Mechanical dispersion by grinding of a fine zircon powder in a raw glaze mixture results in an unoptimised pigment dispersion in the melted glassy phase at high temperature. A significant reduction in the number of particles and a simultaneous large increase in their size is observed. In this case the optical glaze density does not attain the expected value and a very large quantity of zircon must be added. In the present work it is shown that a large part of the zircon reacts with the glass phase during firing. Simultaneously, the remaining zircon grains undergo a large increase in grain size by Ostwald ripening through the liquid phase. This process is characterised by a low activation energy (79 ± 1 kJ mol-1) and a short diffusion path for Zr through the liquid phase between neighbouring grains. The path length is shorter than the size of the larger grains. In the usual firing range, both populations of smaller and larger grains vary in size, the smaller grains favouring growth of the larger grains.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127755802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strength degradation of shocked specimens is shown to depend on the aggregate size, on the preshock strength of sintered specimens, and on cordierite content. Retained strength after shocking increased in specimens prepared from small aggregates owing to the higher initial strength. These specimens contained lower cordierite content as a result of the increased dissociation of cordierite brought about by decreasing the aggregate size.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"424 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121710196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At each stage of the test, the same zones on a side face parallel to the compression axis have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Several elementary mechanisms occurring during superplastic flow and entailing grain rearrangement have been observed, the predominant one being the neighbour switching event. Neighbour switching is associated with grain disappearance corresponding to grain motion perpendicular to the investigated surface. This contributes to the maintenance of a nearly constant grain size and nearly stable structure. Grain boundary sliding is very active during the test, and involves individual grains, rather than rigid grain groups sliding along 'supergrain' boundaries. The results imply that pure Coble diffusion creep cannot account for deformation in the composite.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"416 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129294891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the work was to measure the properties of a relatively large sample, while exposed to microwaves, as a function of temperature. Under these conditions, and especially in the case of large samples, the thermal profile affects overall properties. These aspects are important because these are the conditions that would be present in most microwave processes. Alumina is widely used in the refractory industry, and some published data are considered for comparison.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123497748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The spectral absorption of the bodies was 0·02-0·07 mm-1, similar to that of European hard porcelain. It was found that absorption could be lowered by increasing the content of alkali metal. Scattering coefficient, 10 mm-1 at 380 nm and 3·0 mm-1 at 780 nm, was much smaller than that of European bodies, which is typical for porcelain produced from Japanese plastic clay. Scattering coefficient varied with wavelength, behaviour which was considered to result mainly from the amount of mullite crystals present. On a reflectance-transmittance diagram, all the data for the Japanese porcelain bodies were on a single curved line, again demonstrating typical optical characteristics for Japanese porcelain bodies produced from plastic clay. Based on these results, a way of improving the whiteness and translucence of Japanese porcelain bodies is discussed.","PeriodicalId":350675,"journal":{"name":"British Ceramic Transactions","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133611827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
