The criteria used in the assessment of the trypanocidal effects of the agents included the degree of parasitaemia observed daily for parasite, clinical changes during treatment and after treatment, possible death, haematological changes before and after treatment and frequency of relapse. . Rats treated with sub therapeutic dose of Allium sativum (20 mg/kg) and Diminazene aceturate (1.75 mg/kg) in combination remained parasite free throughout the 60 days of observation. Similar result was obtained in rats treated with diminazene aceturate (3.5 mg/kg) alone. The results of the proximate analysis showed 21.35% crude protein (CP) for locally extracted palm kernel meal compared to 14.73% CP for industrial palm kernel meal. Local palm kernel meals also have a higher value of all other nutrient constituents except nitrogen free extract compared to the industrially processed palm meal. However the amino acid composition of the industrial palm kernel meal was higher than that of the local palm kernel meal. These differences were attributed to processing effect. However both palm kernel meal types had sufficient amino aid that could partially meet the requirements of domestic animals. This suggests that palm kernel meal is a suitable cost effective alternative feed. The, origin, physical and physiological characteristics, breeding, management, nutrition, diseases, ostrich products and adaptability in Nigerian poultry industry were discussed. Ostrich originated from the Saharan region and South Africa. It is a tall, herbivorous bird, weighing on the average, 115 kg for the male and 100 kg for the female. The male has penis, which can only be differentiated from the female’s clitoris at about 7 months of age. Ostrich has Long digestive tract, which is about 24 meters without a crop. It can digest high levels of fiber. During breeding season, onset of which depends on location, females lay about 50-100 eggs of 2.0-3.0 kg depending on type of habitat. In the wild, female and male both incubate the eggs during the day and night respectively, for about 42 days. Good number of ostrich can be found living in the wild (60,000 wild ostriches in Botswana). Domestication is made possible by captive ostriches and little breeding takes place in South Africa, U.S.A. and Australia. Nutrients requirements have not been established. This is taken presently, to be little below the requirements for turkey and diet is compounded as whole life cycle diet. Newcastle disease, cocciodiosis, microsporidiosis and osteomalacia affect ostrich. Meat, eggs, feathers and tendons are obtained from ostrich. In some countries, ostrich meat is in high demand because of its low fat and cholesterol content. There is limited literature on the Nigerian ostrich and its meat is not popular. Ostrich can be found in zoos and parks in Nigeria. Few commercial and demonstration farms can be found in the Northern parts of the country. A total of 315 serum samples were examined using the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique. Marek’s disease virus antibody was present in 88.3% of the serum samples, while 11.7% were negative. Various ranges of flock mean optical densities (OD) were observed, with 8 flocks having a low (0.310-0.550 nm) level, medium (0.551-0.750 nm) level was observed in another 8 flocks, while high (0.751-0.950 nm) level was observed in 3 flocks. The OD level was very high (0.951-1.200 nm) in 2 flocks. Optical density levels also increased with age of the flocks. This shows that even after vaccination against Marek’s disease, not all flocks acquire over 90% positivity.Keywords: Poultry, chicken, Marek’s virus, antibody, Nigeria","PeriodicalId":350170,"journal":{"name":"Animal Production Research Advances","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121267258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cattle sampled were local breeds comprising Gudali, Rahaji, White-Fulani and their crosses. They were aged 1–10 years and were managed semi-intensively. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the detection M. bovis antibody. Of the 62 cattle screened, M. bovis antibody was detected in 41(66%). Also, 24 out of the 41 M. bovis positive cattle were found infected with haemoparasites. Similarly, 11 out of the 21 serologically negative cattle were infected with one or more haemoparasites. Seven (20%), 3(8.5%) and 7(20%) of the M. bovis positive cattle were infected with Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma marginale, and or B. bigemina and A. marginale respectively. One hundred and eighty (180) finisher broilers were fed on five experimental diets formulated such that the maize in diet 1 (control) was replaced with 10% and 20% of raw yam (RWYM) in diets 2 and 3 respectively, while diets 4 and 5 contained 10 and 20% cooked wild yam (CWYM) respectively. Cooking improved the utilization value of wild yam, since there were significant differences (p 0.05) between the performances of birds fed on cooked wild yam meal and the maize-based (control) diets. The result showed that cooking may have reduced or eliminated the observed toxicants (tannins and trypsin inhibitors) present in wild yam meal. Feed intake and body weight gains of the birds decreased with increasing levels of wild yam inclusions. The feed utilization efficiency of the birds was not significantly affected (p>0.05) by the dietary levels of wild yam meal. The internal organs expressed as a percentage of the body weight were not affected (p>0.05) by the treatments. The result of this trial suggests that cooked wild yam meal can substitute for maize in broiler finisher rations up to 20% dietary level without deleterious effect on performance. Local processing of milk generally takes place under uncontrolled hygienic conditions. Lee naga a agbora, a locally fermented milk product in northern Uganda, was evaluated for microbial contamination. The changes in pH, Total Plate Counts (TPC), Total Coliforms (TC), yeasts and moulds, and Escherichia coli 0157:H7, particularly its survival during different stages of  fermentation were studied. The pH was found to decrease with fermentation time (6.54 to 4.54). E. coli was detected in most samples of Lee naga a agbora and its occurrence was observed throughout the fermentation period. The mean value of TPC (6.60± 0.10 log cfu ml-1) at the start of fermentation was significantly different (p 0.05) between 48 and 72 hours. The rate of decrease in TC counts in the initial fermentation period (0 to 48 hours) was lower than the later stages of fermentation (48 to 144 hours).
