The prevalence rates of helminth parasites in the four species of rodents caught were 82.53% in Xerus erythropus (ground squirrel) 38.30% in Thryonomys swinderianus (cane rat) 70.00% in Rattus rattus (Black rat) and 75.00% in Cricetomys gambianus (Gambian giant rat). There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the prevalence rates of the helminthes in the different rodent species. Four groups of helminthes, a trematode species, two species of cestodes, four species of nematodes and one species of an acanthocephalan were encountered in the rodents. The prevalence rates for the respective groups of helminthes were 11.61%, 25.00%, 33.93%, and 8.93%. The worm burdens per infected host were 1.85, 9.57, 10.47 and 8.90 for the trematode, cestodes, nematodes and acanthocephalan respectively. The prevalence rates of the different helminth parasites were 11.61, 15.18, 13.39, 18.75, 17.86, 16.96, 1.79 and 8.93% for Gastrodiscus, Hymenolepis nana, H. dimunita, Oesophagostomum, Cyathostomum, Trichuris, Ascaris and Macrocanthorhynchus respectively. Twenty (52.63%) of the 38 male rodents studied and 46(62.16%) of the 74 female rodents were infected by the helminth parasites whose prevalence rates in the male ranged from 0.00% to 15.97% and 2.70% to 22.97% in the female rodents. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the prevalence rates of the helminth parasites in both sexes of the rodents. The public health significance of the helminth parasites is discussed. Data used for the analysis were collected through well-structured questionnaire and personal interview on the piggery units, costs and revenue items in the farm. The results show that piggery production is a profitable venture. Feeding cost accounted for the largest proportion of the total variable cost incurred in this enterprise. The findings revealed that such variables like number of pigs in stock, labor cost, medication cost and depreciated value of capital implements were positively related to output and statistically significant while feeding cost was negative and significant, but purchasing cost was negative and insignificant. It is recommended that alternative feed sources that will enhance cost reduction and increase output be used. Feed ingredients should be subsidized. More competent workers should be employed and the capacity of piggery production in the establishment should be increased. Workers need motivation and more capital should be made available. Colony plate macroscopic and microscopic examinations as well as various biochemical tests showed thirteen isolates from 300 samples of retailed raw beef and the meat contact surfaces at the Rukuba local market in Jos, Nigeria. Meat contamination (88 or 59.1%, n = 150) was significantly higher (p Pseudomonas, E. coli and Proteus were more frequently seen in meat at rates of 16.0, 14.7 and 6.7% respectively, while Staphylococcus aureus, Aeromonas and Streptococcus were the highest contaminants of contact surfaces at a rate of 5.3% each. Other isolates were Klebsiella (3.0%), coagulase negative Staphylococcus (2.7%), Bacillus (2.3%), Micrococcus (2.0%), Corynebacterium (1.7%), Clostridium and Serratia (1.0%). Mean count of E. coli (5.5x107 cfu/g) and Proteus (1.8x107 cfu/g) were the highest of the microbial density. There was higher contamination of the intestine (52.3%) than either the liver (27.3%, n= 50) or muscle (20.4%, n=50) but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Each seed, when fresh, measures about 3 x 4 cm in size and weighs 30 gm on the average. The matured seeds used for this study were collected from the wild in Mbaitoli and Ngor Okpalla Local Government Areas of Imo State, Nigeria. They were desilted, chopped, milled, dried under the sun for 3 days to produce the meal. Samples of the meal were analysed in the laboratory for proximate and mineral composition while the oil from the seed was examined for its physical constants. The moisture content was 15.60±0.40% while crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash and nitrogen free extract values were 21.11 ± 1.30, 1.90 ± 0.40, 5.03 ± 0.30, 2.00 ± 0.31 and 54.36 ± 0.30% respectively. The oil gave iodine value of 1.013 ± 0.01%, free fatty acid 2.334 ± 0.04%, saponification value 5.394 ± 0.23%, un-saponifiable matter 8.33 ± 0.01% and refractive index of 1.472 ±0.07%. The mineral values stood at 7.00 ± 0.25, 3.96 ± 0.02, 12.80 ± 1.00, 7.85 ± 0.25, and 110.00 ± 3.10 mg/g for calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and phosphorus respectively. The results indicated that Anthonotha macrocphylla seed will be a good ingredient for monogastric animals feed production. Eggs were stripped from the females between 8 and17 hrs. After hypophysation, while milt was obtained from the males by dissection. Proliferation and ease of flow of eggs were observed as the latency period increased. Lowest mean value of 32,750 eggs was obtained at the 8th hour while the highest value of 97,000 eggs was obtained at the 17th hour of latency period. Similarly, percentage fertility ranged between 71.68 and 27.67, percentage hatchability had no regular pattern, ranging between 77 and 70 while fry survival rate ranged between 78.33 and 18.5. Latency period correlated positively with relative fecundity (r = 0.96); negatively with percentage fertility (r = - 0.85); slightly negative with percentage hatchability (r = - 0.36) and highly negative with fry survival rate (r = - 0.895). The ideal optimal latency period (OLP) for H. longifilis therefore is 11 hours post – hypophysation at a temperature of 28 0 c. We report an unusual clinical case and manifestation of Listeria monocytogenes infection in an African buffalo ( Syncerus caffer ) culminating in septicemia and abortion. The infection was unsuspected but only diagnosed by the isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from the multiple specimens of blood, vaginal discharge, swab of the abortficient and feces of the buffalo. The animal, however, recovered after treatment with Enrofloxacin antibiotics. This is the first report on listeriosis in African buffalo in Nigeria. This report has revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the wildlife in Nigeria. Based on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from all the clinical samples and the characteristics data, this L. monocytogenes acquisition is possible cause of the septicemia and abortion in the African buffalo. Consequently listeriosis in wildlife deserves further investigation in Nigeria. One hundred and eighty five (185) of the 200 structured questionnaires administered to collect information on the impact of tsetse and trypanosomosis were returned. Some of the questions posed were on knowledge about the disease and its vectors, their effects on cattle and owners income, treatment of the disease and the farmer's willingness to participate in livestock development programs such as tsetse fly control among others. Prominent clinical signs mentioned by the respondents included emaciation, rough hair coat, poor growth, anemia and loss of appetite. Majority (83%) of the respondents usually treat against trypanosomosis and other diseases. Viable option for African trypanosomes control is vector control. This control had been undertaken using a number of strategies such as vegetation clearing, trapping of insects, application of pesticides and the sterile insect Technique (SIT). However, low rates or lack of sustainability of the achievements of the measures has resulted in an increase in the negative impacts of tsetse/ trypanosomosis problems in the affected areas, including the present study area. As a result of this problem, 77% of the cattle owners (mostly Fulani) are ready to participate and make commitment to livestock development programs such as vector control. The paper suggests that Government should enlighten, encourage and start a pilot project which will involve only a few of the cattle owners, through the introduction of simple techniques such as insecticides impregnated screens and traps, which will be of ready application by an average livestock farmer.
