For this purpose, we use the variable selection method proposed by Sato et al. 2015, which is based on mixed integer optimisation for logistic regression. Computational results demonstrated that when the Akaike information criterion is used as a goodness-of-fit measure, our approach yields a predictive performance better than that obtained using the common stepwise method of variable selection. Moreover, we clarified store choice factors by analysing the results of variable selection.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Knowl. Eng. The three types of websites were informative, socially interactive, and entertaining. Some of the results confirmed previous research; some did not. For example, Japanese consumers tend to have a more positive attitude than US consumers toward a socially interactive advertiser website; consumers with an interdependent self-construal also tended to have a more positive attitude toward the website. But regardless of the type of website, US consumers had a more positive attitude toward the brand. To some extent both national culture and individual-level variables were found to be useful predictor variables for consumer attitudes toward advertiser websites and brands. The results suggested numerous additional directions for further research.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Knowl. Eng. This article presents two contributions to the consumer purchase behaviour research. First, the author describes new in-store behaviour data - radio frequency identification RFID data. An RFID tag attached to a customer's shopping cart can monitor and record the in-store behaviour e.g., location coordinates and elapsed time of that customer at any time. This article refers to in-store behaviour as 'stay time' and applies it to a time-based prediction of purchase behaviour. Second, the author reveals a non-monotonic relationship between purchase behaviour and stay time. For this purpose, the author proposes an operational approach to the construction of a Bayesian network BN to predict purchase behaviour. This article experiments a new perspective on the improvement of purchase decision-making predictions in contrast with the traditional hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Due to this reason, we have taken the help of a latest population-based evolutionary optimisation technique called teaching-learning-based optimisation TLBO for selecting near about optimum cluster centres. After getting the finest initial centroids, we perform the necessary clustering by means of our proposed Enhanced clustering algorithm. In this paper, we have evaluated and assessed the performances of three different TLBO-based clustering algorithms: TLBO-supported classical K-means, TLBO-based fuzzy c-mean and our proposed approach of TLBO-based data clustering. Their clustering efficiency has been compared in conjunction with two typical cluster validity indices, namely the Davies-Bouldin's index and the Dunn's index. We extend our comparison by taking into account their calculated average quantisation error. Each algorithm is then tested on several datasets taken from UCI repository of machine learning databases. Experimental results show that our proposed approach produces better clustering with minimum quantisation error for most of the datasets as compared to the other discussed methods. Also the problem of initial centre selection is minimised to a greater extent.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Knowl. Eng. A few recent studies gathered customer shopping path data by using radio frequency identification technology in addition to point-of-sales data in an attempt to grasp customers' in-store behaviour in more detail. However, customer shopping path data only provides coordinate information in a store, whereas an estimation of the state of customer behaviour is needed. This paper proposes a customer behaviour model based on a hidden Markov model, which is used to estimate two states of customer behaviour in a sales area, namely, 'pass by' and 'stop'. In addition, we propose three evaluation measures of sales areas: non-purchase rate after stop, purchase rate after pass by, and stop rate based on the estimated state of customer behaviour. These measures are useful for the assessment of sales areas. In addition, shopping momentum is known as a state of mind that induces a subsequent purchase while shopping. We identify the customers who are experiencing shopping momentum by using point-of-sales and customer shopping path data and compare their purchase results with those of other customers.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. In this research, we explore data mining techniques that predict students' final grade. We validate our method by conducting experiments on data that are related to grade for courses in North South University, the first private university and one of the leading universities in higher education in Bangladesh. We also extend our ideas through discretisation of the continuous attributes by equal width binning and incorporate it on traditional mining algorithms. However, due to imbalanced nature of data, we got lower accuracy for imbalanced classes. We implement two re-sampling techniques, i.e., ROS random over sampling, RUS random under sampling. Experimental results show that re-sampling techniques could overcome the problem of imbalanced dataset in classification significantly and improve the performance of the classification models. Moreover, three ensemble techniques, namely, bagging, boosting AdaBoost and random forests have been applied in this research to predict the students' academic performance.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. A virtual trochoid was implemented and its parameters were varied to generate various patterns. These patterns were evaluated by a group of 101 participants. Inspired by Birkhoffs concept of measuring aesthetics, order to complexity, we calculated order as the quality related to composition and complexity as the quality related to the intricacy of the structure. The result of this experiment suggests that the aesthetic measure was able to predict at least half of the preferred patterns by the participants and that those with art experience were more developed in considering a balanced composition. There were also certain patterns that both the experienced and non-experienced participants agreed on. This was further analysed using Arnheims theory of compositional weight, where size, colour, negative space and central perceptual force determines whether the trochoids had a sense of unity in its composition. To quantify these factors, the patterns ink density, ink distribution and ink gradient were measured. Our findings suggest that Birkhoffs aesthetic measure reveals useful aesthetic information of trochoid patterns and that patterns that are cohesive appears to be more appealing.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. Instead they need precise information. A kind of precise information obtained in our work is event corefering sentences. All sentences referring to the same event instance are called event corefering sentences. Our proposed approach formulates this event coreference resolution as a graph-based clustering model. It constructs the graph based on the sentences in the document with edge weights representing similarity score between each pair of sentences. To reduce the number of singleton clusters and to have a balanced cut, our approach combines minimum conductance with cut clustering to form clusters of corefering sentences. As finding minimum conductance is NP-hard, it uses particle swarm optimisation technique to obtain minimum conductance.","PeriodicalId":347123,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Knowl. Eng.
