The simulations are supported by measurements performed on a prototype test bed, and are extended to show the effect of cascaded ONEs, including use of Optical Amplifiers (OA) if needed. For intensity modulated broadband signals, the fiber dispersion accumulated over long fiber can lead to power fading of the signal. The power fading drawback can be largely alleviated when optical single-side-band (OSSB) modulation approach is adopted, which had been demonstrated via different optical filter schemes [1][2]. However, the majority of these past filtering approaches also introduce additional distortions due to the filter response. We have recently proposed and demonstrated a novel yet practical approach of cascading four identical off-the-shelf 100 GHz optical bandpass Fabry-Perot filters into a fiber link, which not only minimizes the power fading effect, but also increases Carrier-to-Noise ratio and maintains the distortions at a low level [3]. In this paper the distortions are further characterized and compared between links using single filter and cascaded filter respectively, which provides insight on how the cascaded filter maintains the linearity while mitigates the power fading.","PeriodicalId":347022,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Photonics Technology Conference (AVFOP)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127516960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, high atmospheric attenuation in the MMW band strictly limits the transmission distance, and a lossy conventional coaxial cable cannot configure a network for the distribution of a signal. Radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology based on optical fiber communication aids in realizing easy signal distribution with a low-loss optical fiber [1]. Moreover, a recent optical modulation technique can form an MMW signal precisely at a frequency greater than 100 GHz, with broadband optical modulators and photodetectors [2]. In this study, we demonstrate optical-MMW signal generation for highly accurate frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) radar as well as optical frequency domain refiectometry (OFDR).","PeriodicalId":347022,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Photonics Technology Conference (AVFOP)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114168598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compact, low weight, high bandwidth, low-power and cost-effective avionics are gaining momentum. The use of all-optical components offers advantages in terms of high data rate, immunity to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) / Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), higher signal-to-noise ratio, lower bit error rate (BER), lower power consumption, and lower lifetime system cost as compared to traditional approaches. Recently, a reconfigurable chip-scale optical routing fabric using photonic crystal waveguides for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) was introduced [2], and optically controlled switching devices embodying carbon nanotubes combined with electro-active materials for fiber optic aircraft control systems were proposed [3].","PeriodicalId":347022,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Photonics Technology Conference (AVFOP)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120936450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers an attractive solution for airplanes, such a replacing copper conductors to reduce weight of the plane, electro-magnetic interference, bring high-speed communications connection, implementation of optical sensors, etc. Nevertheless for extremely high requirements on safety it is also necessary to precede all inflight influences. For summary of potential threats see e.g. [2]. One can easily found a several conditions of a harsh environment or an unfriendly fiber surrounding which could have a fatal impact to the transmission characteristic as attenuation statistics leading to link drops, time jitters or pulse degradations in time domain. There are different temperature gradients on the deck through which the infrastructure can pass while experiencing differentiated degradation and thus changed conditions within a physical layer. This paper is focused on an analysis of temperature-depended influences on insertion losses and other parameters of optical connectors, combining two types of multimode fibers, purposed for installation within an aircraft optical network.","PeriodicalId":347022,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Photonics Technology Conference (AVFOP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131885289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant progress has been made and chip-scale spectrometers have been demonstrated with various configurations, such as superprism or arrayed waveguide grating [1,2], Fabry-Perot filter array [3], micro-resonator array [4], etc. However, there is a fundamental tradeoff between the resolution and footprint on these dispersive components or resonance array. Tunable Fabry-Perot filter, on the other hand, turns the spectrum splitting from the spatial domain into temporal domain. It requires only one photodetector, and can achieve high resolution and small footprint at the same time [5]. To further reduce the footprint of the whole system, here we monolithically integrate the tunable Fabry-Perot filter with the photodetector into one single device, herein referred as a swept-wavelength detector. It employs quantum well structures in a Fabry-Perot cavity, with a high contrast grating (HCG) [6] as a microelectromechanical actuable top reflector and a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) as the bottom reflector, shown in Figure 1. The ultrahigh reflectivity and light-weight of the HCG ensures a high finesse and a high tuning speed. A total bandwidth of 33.5 nm at 1550 nm and an operation speed of 200 kHz are experimentally demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":347022,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Photonics Technology Conference (AVFOP)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128827137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
