Many processes still need to be improved in different regions of Colombia where Hass variety is cultivated in order to increase the efficiency during harvesting, transportation and storage. Human-performed classification of avocados takes time that could be used by farm's personnel to perform other activities aimed to achieve higher quality standards and production efficiency. Product price and target market depends to a large extent on classification stage. We propose a system based on image processing of avocados' pictures for their classification after they have been picked off the tree. The classifying algorithm runs on a computer which receives fruit's images wirelessly from a camera, the result is transmitted using IEEE 802.15.4 packets and avocados are placed in conveyor belt rails according to their categories. Matching percentage of the image processing algorithm for selecting avocados was of 88% compared to the test set classified by expert farmers. Confusion matrix showed 82.22% accuracy when classifying avocados.","PeriodicalId":346697,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131106230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are special characteristics that enable longer battery life and higher IP core integration. This paper describes the design and implementation of an 8-bit asynchronous processor mapped into FPGA devices, described in VHDL language, with a minimalist, novel architecture and a simple but complete arithmetic, logic, shifter and program flow instruction set. The aim of this development is to be a demonstration of mapping complex asynchronous circuits in commercial FPGA devices as a way to get acquainted, understand the capability and applicability of the technology. For demonstration, this processor has been carried out into the Xilinx Spartan-6 XC6SLX9 FPGA and each of the constitutive modules into the Xilinx CoolRunner-II CPLD family devices. The Authors believe that it is possible to be carried out in many other FPGA device families, with minor changes in the asynchronous latch instantiation and User Constraint Files.","PeriodicalId":346697,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128359264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This property, called scalability is affected by the decentralized nature of ad hoc networks making it necessary to develop mechanisms that allow a large number of nodes work together without affecting network performance. In this paper, we propose a stochastic model based on the geometric distribution, which allows to characterize the level of resources in a hierarchical architecture and then establish an appropriate relationship between the level of resources of two successive layers of the network.","PeriodicalId":346697,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127020906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The plethora of IEEE 802.X communication standards, favors greatly the development of wireless sensor networks ranging from body-area to wide-area coverage. The use of gateways to connect wireless networks with infrastructure networks increase the range of coverage of monitoring applications, and allows getting data remotely through interfaces running on devices like desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. We present a monitoring platform called EnViBo which is based on a three level architecture; this platform integrates sensor nodes that use moderate-cost elements and Microchip's IEEE 802.15.4-based royaltie-free protocol named MiWi P2P for communications. The progresses in fields like embedded systems, energy harvesting solutions, microelectromechanical systems and wearable sensors, allows creating applications supported by EnViBo platform which can be both cost and operationally effective.","PeriodicalId":346697,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127307594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paradigm targets optimization and automation of electric power network, using advanced information and communication technologies. Among the main communication protocols for Smart Grids we have the DNP3 protocol, which provides secure data transmission with moderate rates. The IEEE 802.15.4 is another communication protocol also widely used in Smart Grid, especially in the so-called Home Area Network (HAN). Thus, many applications of Smart Grid depends on the interaction of these two protocols. This paper proposes modeling, in the traditional network simulator NS-2, the integration of DNP3 protocol and the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard for low cost simulations of Smart Grid applications.","PeriodicalId":346697,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124843420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some examples can be seen in commercial devices targeted at healthy user who wish to improve their fitness, however, such developments are also growing as technological devices that allow quantifying the preventive or corrective physical therapy with engaging virtual scenarios that provide an immersive experience. Current advances in mechanical, electronics and computer systems are allowing that enthusiasts and researchers take advantage of low cost technologies integrating solutions with devices such as, tablets, smartphones, laptops and gaming consoles. The assessment of the user with these tools provide data that allows following up the patient's evolution during the therapy from the user and health care specialist point of view complementing visual and survey-based assessments. This project proposes an application for monitoring lower member physical activity while the user performs targeted movements within a gamified system, resulting in point rewards that increase or decrease accordingly to the correct or incorrect execution of the routine.
