In particular, we target to design the adaptive modulation scheme that achieves the optimal power-delay tradeoff under practical concerns, such as the practical power consumption model of a base station and the dynamics of user traffic. The optimal modulation level selection problem is formulated in a Markov decision problem and a cross-layer approach is adopted to take both queue and channel dynamics into consideration. Simulation results show that the proposed policy achieves about 20% power saving for the same delay performance, compared with fixed modulation level schemes. In addition, the impact of the practical power consumption model under dynamic traffic does change the optimal modulation level selection philosophy.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129442339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study the protocol level aspects of relays as well as cell-edge performance of a mobile terminal with system simulations. The results indicate that when a user is performing TCP downloads and uploads, in addition to potential subframe split between the backhaul and access link, also the adopted protocol solution and increased delays have impact on the user performance. Due to this, the bitrates may degrade even with outband relays if the UE having decent macro coverage is connected to a relay. However, when the UE has bad macro coverage, then there are gains from both inband and outband relays.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122645369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work is based on a three node relay system, where on the relay node, multiple antennas are deployed, and single antenna on other nodes. The idea of the location-aided transmit strategy is to acquire angle-of-arrival (AoA) of signal through relative location of devices, and to make use of the AoA in designing transmit beamformers. It is presented in this paper that this practical method for low-cost systems yields good system performance in terms of spectral efficiency when Line-of-Sight components exist in the propagation channel. In addition, the achievable rate performance of such relay network system in the broadcasting phase, which is impacted by Rician K-factor and the relative position between devices, are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127058203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CB-ICIC is in many ways linked to the widely investigated dynamic channel assignment problem, which is often studied in the context of graph coloring. The investigation revolves around the sensible definition of the underlying graph, i.e. the network model, rather than focusing on the coloring algorithms and their properties. Ultimately, we posit that improper online graph-coloring suffices and is actually preferable. In short, settling for less-than-optimal configurations avoids uncontrolled service interruptions. Such disruptions tend to raise understandable concerns when it comes to fully autonomous selection of operational CCs. Our results dispel such concerns by showing that conservative methods can achieve most of the benefits of unrestricted off-line coloring algorithms with a very modest number (2-3) of CCs to choose from.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124562370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This upperbound can be achieved using the Interference Alignment approach (IA), proposed by Cadambe et al., In this work, a new optimized design of the IA scheme is presented. It involves introducing, for each user, a combination matrix so as to maximize the sum rate of the network. The optimal design is obtained via an iterative algorithm proposed in the K-user IA network, and a convergence to a local optimum is achieved. Numerical results enable us to evaluate the performance of the new algorithm and to compare it with other designs.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114984929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed synchronization scheme is based on the noise-induced phase synchronization theory; the phases of the periodical limit cycle orbits of nonlinear oscillators synchronize with each other by adding a common noise signal to the oscillators. Based on this theory, we synchronize the clocks of the wireless sensor nodes by tuning them according to the phase of their nonlinear oscillator to which natural environmental signals are added as noise. In this paper, first we analyze cross-correlation of the natural environmental signals measured by ZigBee wireless sensor nodes, which are arranged outdoor at about 20m intervals, and show that the cross- correlation among the signals sensed at different sensor nodes are around 0.8 or higher. According to this result, we analyze possibility of the noise- induced phase synchronization with changing cross- correlation between the additive noises, and clarify that the nonlinear oscillators can be synchronized in the cases that the cross-correlation becomes around 0.8 or higher. Finally, we investigate feasibility of the noise-induced phase synchronization by actual data of natural environmental signals sensed at each sensor node and show it is possible to synchronize wireless sensor nodes without any interactions or communications among them.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115771567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we address the problem of detecting the macro-cell coverage hole and protecting the macro-users that are located inside such a coverage hole. To reduce the impact of HeNB interference on the macro-cell performance, the HeNBs can be partially muted on some subframes, leading to Time Domain (TDM) muting. With TDM muting, macro-users in the coverage hole can be protected by scheduling them only on the muted subframes that are free of HeNB interference. Different methods for coverage hole detection are considered, and their performance is evaluated under the downlink transmission of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. These methods are based on user measurements. Recommendations on the coverage hole detection will be provided based on the obtained results.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124257025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MU-MIMO CQI predictions have been investigated for LTE Release 8 (rank one, Transmission Mode 5) and for LTE Release 9 (adaptive rank, Transmission Mode 8) at the link level. The relationship between CQI reporting and channel conditions is analytically analysed and demonstrated. The tradeoff between the performance gain and the feedback overhead w.r.t. MUMIMO CQI prediction is investigated as well. The results have shown how MU-MIMO CQI prediction is influenced by channel correlation and that significant improvements can be achieved through rank adaption and receiver choice. The results have also shown the potentially most efficient system configuration (feedback design and CQI prediction scheme) to facilitate MUMIMO transmission for practical LTE systems.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117206191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A utility function is introduced first, whose parameters are determined by the modified multi-state Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) which adapts to different load levels according to dynamic thresholds. Based on this, a bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed for Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and Variable Bit Rate (VBR) services depending on not only utility fairness among different networks, but also the fairness between new arrival and ongoing services. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in guaranteeing both the fairness of the edge users and the network system performance, i.e. keeping low block probability in the wireless network system.","PeriodicalId":333610,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 75th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121057829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
