However, an unlicensed (cognitive) user may share a frequency band with a licensed (primary) owner as long as the interference is below a certain threshold. This makes power control a critical important issue in these networks. In this paper, we consider a decentralized power control algorithm that satisfies the most two significant metrics in cognitive radio network, capacity of cognitive network and total interference to primary users. The problem might be formulated as a power optimization problem, where rate allocation and power control are modeled through the objective function in which each user utility depends not only on its variables but also on the variables of other user utilities. Geometric Programming (GP) Problem is used to convert nonconvex optimization problem to convex optimization problem by introducing auxiliary variables and adding extra equality constraints, thus transferring the coupling in the objective to coupling in the constraints, which can be decoupled by primal-dual decomposition method, then can be efficiently solved even with a large number of users. The benefits of the method are illustrated through numerical results.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122829367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm works with factor graph over linear models and uses messages in a particular class of parameterized Gaussian-like distributions by tracking their parameters. With respect to the regular Gaussian BP, this algorithm adds two operations to the factor graph, namely the wrapping and the discretization of variables. This addition allows to use ADBP to construct iterative decoders for mod-M ring encoders that have a complexity independent from the size of the alphabets, thus opening the possibility to construct efficient decoders for systems with unbounded spectral efficiencies. In this paper we derive the updating rules of ADBP and show some possible simplifications of them that make ADBP suitable for implementation in practical systems.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114569929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eigenvectors of the DFrFT transform matrix are used as user sequences, which are transmitted over a real adder channel. Compared to other transforms used in the same context, the advantage of using the DFrFT is that the sequences can be generated from a systematic procedure and the number of generated subspaces, which determines the maximum number of simultaneous users of a scheme, is arbitrary. After describing the basic idea of our approach, we discuss some aspects related to its practical implementation and present preliminary simulation results.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121854947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed equalizer comprises equal-length subequalizers, enabling any adaptive filtering algorithm to be employed for coefficient updates. A recently proposed computationally-efficient recursive least squares algorithm based on dichotomous coordinate descents is utilized to solve the normal equations associated with the adaptation of the new equalizer. Simulations show that the proposed equalizer is superior to the previously proposed adaptive MIMO channel equalizers by providing both enhanced bit error rate performance and reduced computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm exhibits stable numerical behavior and can deliver a trade-off between performance and complexity.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121961243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We seek to minimize the expected sum transmission energy used by the source and relay, by choosing the transmission power of each node dynamically slot by slot. We assume that both receivers, namely the relay and the destination, can accumulate mutual information across previous and present slots by using earlier received packets for joint decoding. Assuming availability of causal channel state information (CSI) at all transmitters, we obtain the structure of the optimal solutions by dynamic programming. A key insight is that relaying is necessary for the expected sum energy to be bounded in Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results show that the reduction in the expected sum energy is significant.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122000908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Closed form expressions for the optimal coherence length for minimizing outage probability and maximizing average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived. In the case of outage probablity, we observe that the optimal coherence parameter does not depend on the pointing error statistics. For average SNR results, PCBs can improve performance when large fixed beam offsets are present. We also provide BER performance analysis results for a convolutionally coded system and demonstrate significant performance improvement using PCBs with optimized parameters.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122020002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case of independent and identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels is considered. It is shown that expressions for the SEPs of MRC diversity operating in Nakagami-m fading channels can be obtained by both replacing the diversity order, L, with mL and replacing the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per bit, γ̅ with γ̅/m in expressions for the SEPs of MRC diversity in Rayleigh fading channels. An identity which states that the bit error probability (BEP) of L-branch soft-decision MRC detection equals that of (2L - 1)-branch hard-decision detection with majority logic combining, both in independent Rayleigh fading channels and with equal branch SNRs, is recalled. The identity is used to derive new expressions for the SEP of MRC diversity in Nakagami-m fading channels. It is also shown that outage probability and average level-crossing rate for MRC reception in Nakagami-m fading channels can be obtained from corresponding outage probability and average level-crossing rate for MRC reception in Rayleigh fading channels. The relationships established will find application both in deriving solutions to unsolved problems and, where past solutions exist, in finding simpler solutions.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122204828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theory for a Future Internet which supports multiple service classes, i.e., the traditional Best-Effort (BE) class and a new Essentially-Perfect-QoS (QoS) class, has recently been proposed. In this Future Internet, the routers give preference to the QoS traffic class. All smoothened end-to-end traffic flows in the QoS class will never experience congestion and can achieve Essentially Perfect link-utilizations and end-to-end QoS guarantees, with significantly improved energy-efficiencies. Each Future Internet router must provision bandwidth for the QoS traffic class, and schedule this class with 100% throughput efficiency and strict QoS guarantees, using a recently-proposed mathematical scheduling algorithm. In this paper, adaptive traffic estimation algorithms which allow each Future Internet router to estimate its future QoS traffic demands and provision bandwidth for the QoS demands in anticipation of their arrival are proposed. An Autonomic Controller (AC) in each router maintains a history of its QoS and Best-Effort traffic demands over a long time horizon. Several variations of Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) filters are used to estimate the future traffic demands. The AC can then provision resources for the QoS demands in anticipation of their arrival. To test the algorithms, real traffic measurements taken every 15 minutes over 4 months for a European backbone network are used. The estimates are shown to be very accurate, provisioning bandwidth for the QoS class with success rates between 93% ... 99%. An Autonomic Controller (AC) in each router can also be used to automate the bandwidth provisioning process for existing Differentiated-Services traffic classes in existing Best-Effort Internet routers.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116676122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In CR, an unlicensed network user is enabled to dynamically/adaptively access the frequency channels according to the current state of the radio environment and, therefore, CR refers to a smart radio as defined in an “observe-learn-decision” cognitive cycle. In this paper, we consider the medium access control (MAC) protocols as radio parameters in the cognitive cycle, and propose a new approach called MAC protocol identification to implement smart cognitive MAC. The MAC protocol identification approach enables CR users to sense and identify the network MAC protocol types. The identification results will be used by CR users to adaptively change their transmission parameters in order to improve the spectrum hole utilization efficiency, save energy, minimize the interference to the primary users, as well as facilitate communications among heterogeneous CR networks. To verify that the MAC protocol identification is feasible, we propose a MAC identification process based on machine learning techniques in this paper, and some experimental results are presented.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117279999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The occurrence of pressure ulcers has been attributed to prolong sedentary behaviour. Providing care, for this preventable condition, is costly and time-consuming for patients and medical practitioners. Extra bedside assistance is needed; however, with the workload of medical staff increasing, this is not always practical. In order to prevent the occurrence of pressure ulcers new and novel ways of remotely monitoring patients is essential. An interesting approach worth considering is the use of human digital memories, which provide visual life logs of a patient's physiological and environmental data. This paper discusses some of the current technologies used within the area and how they might be applied to the management and prevention of pressure ulcers. We have successfully developed a working prototype system to demonstrate the applicability of our approach.","PeriodicalId":331080,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129527037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
