Les phenomenes de generation des fumees, et en particulier celle des suies qui en sont l'un des composants principaux, sont ainsi decrits. La quantite de fumee produite est mesuree a l'aide de systemes optiques appeles opacimetres, ou evaluee indirectement au travers d'une methode basee sur un rapport entre combustible brule et suies produites. Cet article a pour objectif de presenter les principales causes pouvant mener au BLEVE et de lister les barrieres de securite permettant de reduire son occurrence. La premiere partie de l'article s'attache a rappeler ce qu'est un BLEVE. La seconde partie detaille le deroulement de quelques accidents historiques. Une troisieme partie s'interesse aux causes pouvant mener a ce phenomene.
