This paper focuses on a single BSA (basic service area) in an infrastructure network and adopts a hierarchical scheduling architecture. In the architecture, the AP (access point) schedules wireless terminals, and each wireless terminal schedules voice, video and data sources. In priority scheme I, wireless terminals exert priority control where voice and video transmission is given higher priority over data transmission. On the other hand, priority scheme II carries out priority control at both AP and wireless terminals. By simulation, we compare the performance of priority scheme I, priority scheme II and a non-priority scheme. Numerical results show that these priority schemes can support a larger number of multimedia wireless terminals than the non-priority scheme under the same condition.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. We develop the optimal transmit power adaptation method to maximize the channel capacity of a multicarrier system, considering both frequency and time domains. The optimal transmit power adaptation policy with average transmit power constraint is found to be \"water-pouring\" in the frequency-time domain. We also show that the channel capacity with the frequency-time domain transmit power adaptation is greater than that with only the frequency domain transmit power adaptation.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. IEEE, 2000) for wireless communication & MCNs combine the benefits of having a fixed infrastructure of base stations and the flexibility of ad-hoc networks. They are capable of achieving much higher throughput than current cellular systems, which can be classified as single-hop cellular networks (SCNs). This work concentrates on MCNs and SCNs using the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LANs. We provide a general overview of the architecture and the issues involved in the design of MCNs, in particular the challenges to be met in the design of a routing protocol. We extend the work of Lin and Hsu to enhance the throughput of such networks further. We propose a routing protocol for use in such networks. We conduct extensive experimental studies on the performance of MCNs and SCNs under various load conditions (both TCP and UDP). Then studies clearly indicate that MCNs with the proposed routing protocol are a viable alternative for SCNs, in fact they provide much higher throughput.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The proposed scheme that is based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation utilizes the AAA's outputs of which interference signal components are drastically suppressed. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can operate properly even in interference-rich fading environments, and that it can significantly improve the synchronization performance.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. A multi-tiered cellular radio system may provide adequate capacity needed to ensure reliable delivery of high quality broadband services to home, office, and mobile users. At the lowest tier, one may envisage picocellular base stations interconnected via short, highly focused free-space optical links, in a multihop mesh arrangement, thereby eliminating the need for new broadband access cabling to backhand traffic from the base stations. Ultimately, the traffic generated in these picocells must be relayed to an entry/exit port (end-office) of the core network. An intelligent routing/load-balancing strategy will help avoid hot spots on the mesh and increase network capacity. The performance metric would be the probability that a newly generated virtual connection must be blocked to maintain QoS guarantees, within this mesh network. A new dynamic routing/load-balancing algorithm is proposed to achieve high performance in terms of blocking probability in the presence of both uniform and nonuniform traffic distributions. Simulation results show that the algorithm dramatically helps in reducing congestion at hot spots in the network. For a toroidal grid configuration it is seen that the new dynamic routing to different end-offices achieves a 20% reduction in blocking probability when compared with a routing scheme wherein picocells have static affiliations with end-offices.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The simulation results show that the improvement in radio link performance is almost saturated at a bandwidth of greater than 40 MHz (the corresponding number of multipaths is 12-48) when the spreading factor of the channel is SF = 32, and the best performance is achieved at the bandwidth of approximately 20 MHz when SF = 4 with two-branch antenna diversity reception. This is generated by the tradeoff between the improvement in the Rake time diversity effect and the increased MPI in addition to the degradation in the path search and channel estimation accuracy associated with a lower average received signal-to-interference plus background noise power ratio. Therefore, we conclude that MC/DS-CDMA, where each carrier has the bandwidth of approximately 20-40 MHz, is one of the most promising candidates for broadband packet wireless access in the reverse link.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Each scheme, and combination of schemes, is investigated under the same assumptions for channel model, number of cells and quality of service provision; and simulation is used to derive the number of simultaneous users that can be supported in each case. It is shown that the additional complexity of adaptive modulation and coding is rarely justified, and that the facility for intracell handoffs is the most important technique to include in an efficient resource allocation algorithm.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. In this paper, we present maximum likelihood as well as variance unbiased estimators for the local mean signal decibel power. We consider a generalized Nakagami-m fading environment and show that these estimators are asymptotically efficient in the number of samples and in the fading parameter m. Numerical and simulation results confirm that these estimators clearly outperform the sample mean estimators and quickly approach Cramer-Rao lower bounds.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Unlike conventional parallel acquisition schemes, the search region of each searcher in the proposed scheme is modified so that it is overlapped with that of other searchers. The use of the proposed search scheme enables us to obtain multiple information on the same code phase at different time instants, providing the time diversity effect. This effect results in acquisition performance robust to fading. The performance of the proposed acquisition scheme is analytically evaluated in terms of the detection probability and the mean acquisition time in the Rayleigh fading channel. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can provide acquisition performance robust to channel conditions, including fading and correlation between the subchannels.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications.
