The Small Business Act No. 106 of 1996 as amended now by National Small Business Amendment Act of 2003, was introduced in order to enable a conducive, environment for small, medium and microenterprise. This article focuses on an investigation of the effectiveness of the Local Business Service Centre that aimed at disseminating information about government policies and programmes to empower women aspiring to start and grow businesses. Three hundred black women entrepreneurs in Tshwane formed the sample, and the response rate was 86 %. The results indicated that black women entrepreneurs are not aware of services provided by LBSC about government policies and programmes. It is recommended that the City of Tshwane should extend its outreach effort and create awareness about LBSC to townships where a majority of women entrepreneurs are based.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122356870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A questionnaire was used as the prime instrument to correlate the participant’s responses to their academic scores. The study investigated the differences and similarities between males and females in not only genderbased academic performance but also considered gender via other factors such as age. The research used independent t-Test statistics. The result suggested that females performed better than males in arts-related subjects; but recorded that age did not significantly influence academic performance. It is therefore concluded that institutions, lecturers, and parents should encourage males to study harder in arts-related subjects; while equal emphasis should be put in encouraging both younger and older students to perform well in arts-related subjects.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114444517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also explored whether children.s choice of moral orientation varied across individual factors such as age and gender. The study was conducted at a primary school in a working class suburb in THE province of KwaZulu-Natal. The participants in the study were a group of 72 grade one and two students. They were randomly selected stratified by age (6, 7 and 8 year olds) and gender. The children were required to respond to three scenarios depicting real life moral dilemmas. A key finding was that children.s responses across gender and age reflected more of a care than a justice orientation. Across age ranges boys. responses reflected more of a care orientation than a justice orientation which is contrary to Kohlberg.s view. Girls. responses reflected a greater care orientation than a justice orientation, as found in studies by Gilligan.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115487476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data was collected from two hundred and twenty (220) residents in Mafikeng households consisting of 132 (60%) females and 88 (40%) males. Age in years ranged from 18 to 68 with a mean age of 28.7 (SD) = 11.9. Through a multi-staged sampling of streets and households, participants were reached in Mafikeng municipality area of the North West Province, South Africa. Using hierarchical multiple regression (stepwise method), results showed that the overall model was significant: Adjusted R Square = 089, F (2, 211) = 11.460, P the study (gender, age, Christian, Muslim, Married, Single, Below Matric, Matric, Post Matric, Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism), only Extraversion (s = .27, p = .001) and Post-matric level of education (s = .16, p = .001) explained 8% of the total variance on willingness to forgive. Psychoticism, Neuroticism, gender, age, Christian, Muslim, Married, Single, Below Matric, Matric, were excluded from the model. These findings have significant practical implications for forgiveness as a psychological concept. The authors acknowledges that the study is new and therefore suggests the need for more research in this direction and a need for cultural focus and relevant programmes on forgiveness.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131890867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sixty - nine (69) working women from a Women Fellowship of about 86 located at Agbowo, Ibadan were used for the study. Akinboye's Response to Change Test (RTCT) or Work Stress Inventory was used to collate the data and analyzed. Two hypotheses were tested and rejected. Further analysis shows that an average of 92% of graduate respondents between age (31-50) experienced high stress, implying that there is significant difference in respondents' response to stress experienced on the basis of age and educational qualification. Thus indicating that age and educational qualification can sometimes determine who experience stress or not. The analyses reveal that older career mothers with higher degrees experienced high levels of stress than younger ones. The library is recommended to play a crucial role in managing stress in the workplace, which is mainly to make information materials / resources available to staff and workers.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114842318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper shows that globalization has a compounded effect on women due to certain structural disadvantages in the global and national division of labour and inequalities in assets distribution and power. The concept of Gender encompasses an economic issue as well as a social issue, in fact more so in Africa than in any other regions of the world. Both men and women play substantial economic roles, notably in agriculture and in the informal sector, but they are not evenly distributed across the sectors of the economy. This has given rise to various issues which undermine the social and economic status of the African woman. Thus, this research aimed at investigating the attitudes of male and female undergraduate students at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, towards the use of the Internet. A questionnaire which captured the students’ demographic data (like sex, faculty),and their attitudes towards the use of internet, was administered to them in a class-room setting. Results show that most the students had a positive attitude towards the use of the internet; and there was no significant difference between the attitude of males and that of females. It is therefore recommended that parents, teachers, and the university administrators should encourage both male and female students equally to use the internet for their research and studies. More studies, using a wider audience as participants, are encouraged.","PeriodicalId":308310,"journal":{"name":"Gender and behaviour","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128584395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
