It bears deep and intriguing commentary on the social and psychological situations during the period of transition when the world was heading toward the First World War. This article aims to undertake a study of this novel in terms of how it brings forth modern man’s psychological conflicts by effectively revealing the stark contrast between the characters’ social appearance and their internal desires. It intends to investigate the workings of personality archetypes that Ford’s characters unintentionally adopt in this novel with an exclusive theoretical underpinning of Carl Jung’s Collective Unconscious and his Archetypes of personality. The study finds out how individuals suffer psychologically when society undergoes transitions and how it affects their social relationships. The purpose of this study is to highlight the fact that Ford’s characters are having unbalanced archetypes because of the deterioration and disillusionment prevailing in Pre-war modern society. It makes their personalities confused and to behave ambiguously and unconventionally, consequently causing their relationships to collapse and their lives to suffer.","PeriodicalId":305544,"journal":{"name":"Global Sociological Review","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116923065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research examines semiotic citizenship’s role in developing the language landscape and determines whether or not the language landscape contributes to constructing socio-political identities. The purpose of this research is a comprehensive multimodal survey of multilingual signs and advertisements seen in public places, also known as the linguistic landscape as signs created by individuals of any area indicate their direct connection with the city and ownership. The data collected for this research includes 825 photographic samples from roadside restaurants, advertisements, hospitals, various shops, and other sources in the cities, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The theoretical framework used for this research is Linguistic Landscape Theory from the perspective of Landry–Bourhis (1997). The findings highlight that Urdu and English, language and sometimes Punjabi is preferred on street signs. Furthermore, Urdu was the language of choice in the Tourist Destination and its more modest surroundings, whereas English was in the business districts. In general, language and signs are used to describe the linguistic landscape in Pakistan.","PeriodicalId":305544,"journal":{"name":"Global Sociological Review","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121910463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Targeting primarily the middle-class married women, it gives guidance and suggestions on beautifying appearance, latest fashions,housekeeping, cooking, and child-rearing. Using 24 issues of Good Housekeeping published in 2016-2017, this study explores what kind of femininity is constructed in this magazine. The study uses thematic analysis and interpretive textual analysis as the key methodologies. Furthermore, it explores the overlapping relationships between the magazine, femininity, and consumer culture. The article finds that femininity constructed in those two years of Good Housekeeping tends to be conservative, which is idealized and perfected in the magazine.The magazine has maintained its long-established and conservative style. It is established on a commercialized base and advocates that ideal femininity is to be gained through \"purchasing.\" The conservative femininity constructed by the magazine is under the manipulation of modern patriarchy and consumerism.","PeriodicalId":305544,"journal":{"name":"Global Sociological Review","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127387228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It studies how disagreement strategies are influenced by the participants' own cultural pragmatic rules and pose problems for others to follow them as intended. The speech acts of strong and mitigated disagreement are analyzed in detail, with different participants employing different strategies as adopted from their respective cultures. CMC, being a contemporary medium of communication in its own right, is rich in new possibilities for intercultural exchange and collaboration in virtual rather than physical space in which the participants' strategies express differing opinions, or a change in the interpretation of an idea, in the form of contrastive connectives and concussive transition markers. The study concludes that speakers with a lower level of linguistic competence need to be equipped with essential pragmalingusitc strategies and skills in disagreement strategies in intercultural situations.","PeriodicalId":305544,"journal":{"name":"Global Sociological Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130673823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many institutes are offering civic education, and numerous studies have been conducted in the international context. Still, citizenship education in higher education in Pakistan has been the least researched area, and henceforth it has not been explored how university students rate themselves regarding knowledge and preparation of nationality; and in what way universities propose programs to inculcate civic attributes among graduates. Therefore, to investigate this problem, the current study was conducted with the objectives; of exploring students' views about the characteristics of good citizenship; to examine the role of universities in developing citizenship. Four focus groups from four universities, i.e. one focus group from each university/each focus group consisting of 9 respondents, were taken as the sample of the study. Data was collected by using a semi-structured interview protocol (i.e. a focus group questionnaire) and analyzed by thematic analysis. Findings exposed that the respondents were significantly in favor of improving social responsibility, civic skills,morality/honesty/courtesy, broad mindedness, civic participation, accountability/critical thinking,patriotism/obedience, and reliability (promise-keeping). The group's discussion indicated mixed ideas about the role of universities in developing and maintaining citizenship services at university campuses.","PeriodicalId":305544,"journal":{"name":"Global Sociological Review","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131176976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
