Stalker","doi":"10.3138/ijcs-2021-0009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/ijcs-2021-0009","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:It is widely accepted that the burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to climate change. Our question is: How are the related extraction and distribution activities viewed in Canada? This article analyzes Canadian public opinion data on five supply-side energy policies: expanding the oil sands, drilling for oil in the Arctic, fracking, expanding an oil pipeline, and shipping oil by rail. It applies social psychological models to identify factors associated with support for and opposition to these policies. Climate change attitudes have typically been found to be significant predictors of climate policy support. Instead, this study finds that having an ecological worldview is a strong predictor for each of the policies. This suggests that these policies are seen as having an effect on the environment but less so as affecting climate change. Contextual factors, such as region of residence and political orientation, are relevant predictors, suggesting that framing by political parties, industry, and social movement organizations has had a significant effect on support and opposition.Résumé:Il est généralement admis que l’utilisation de combustibles fossiles est l’un des principaux facteurs du changement climatique. Comment les activités connexes d’extraction et de distribution sont-elles perçues au Canada? Telles sont les questions que soulèvent les auteurs, qui analysent les données d’opinion publique au Canada sur cinq politiques d’offre énergétique: l’exploitation accrue des sables bitumineux, le forage pétrolier dans l’Arctique, la fracturation hydraulique, l’extension d’un oléoduc et l’expédition de pétrole par train. L’article s’appuie sur des modèles de psychologie sociale pour déterminer les facteurs associés à l’appui ou à l’opposition à ces politiques. On constate généralement que les attitudes à l’égard du changement climatique sont des indicateurs révélateurs de l’adhésion aux politiques climatiques. Or cette étude montre plutôt que le fait d’avoir une vision écologique du monde est un facteur prédictif important pour chacune des politiques. Cela semble indiquer que ces politiques sont considérées comme ayant un effet sur l’environnement, mais moins sur le changement climatique. Des facteurs contextuels, tels que la région de résidence et l’orientation politique, sont des indicateurs pertinents, ce qui porte à croire que la manière de présenter les choses adoptées par les partis politiques, l’industrie et les organisations sociales a eu un effet notable sur l’appui ou l’opposition.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45989296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Davies et Bernier y représentent des formes culturelles qui intègre dans une intrication complexe le sport spectacle, sa marchandisation et la création de mythes collectifs. Dans un système sportif longtemps dominé par le hockey, ils représentent tous deux des points nodaux dans les luttes incessantes autour de la (re)définition de la citoyenneté et de l’appartenance. En explorant notamment leur mise en récit paradoxale comme « immigrants idéaux » au prisme de leur racisation, cet article contribue à éclairer les dynamiques culturelles propres de l’environnement du sport et des médias dans les contextes canadien et québécois. Notre analyse vise ainsi à montrer comment les récits mobilisés pour raconter les trajectoires de Davies et Bernier au sein du complexe culturel média/sport canadien participent de la gouvernementalité propre aux régimes inspirés du multiculturalisme et de l’interculturalisme, reproduisant les inégalités et la discrimination à même un discours qui se veut ouvert et bienveillant.Abstract:In this article, we argue that soccer stars in Canada and Quebec, such as Alphonso Davies and Patrice Bernier, are examples of the “production of diversity” in the Canadian sporting cultural and media landscape. Davies and Bernier represent cultural forms that integrate spectator sports in a complex entanglement along with its commodification and the creation of collective myths. In a sport system long dominated by hockey, they both represent focal points in the ongoing struggles surrounding citizenship and belonging. Exploring their paradoxical narrative as “ideal immigrants” through the lens of their racialization, this article sheds light on the cultural dynamics specific to the world of sports and media in the Canadian and Québécois contexts. Our analysis aims to show how the narratives mobilized to describe Davies’s and Bernier’s trajectories within the Canadian media/sports cultural complex relate to the governmentality specific to systems inspired by multiculturalism and interculturalism, reproducing inequality and discrimination within a discourse that is meant to be open and welcoming.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48755595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pour la presse francophone, l’enjeu est de savoir si cette formule cache un jeu d’énonciations dans lequel le Canada représente un exemple à imiter ou au contraire à éviter. Afin de pouvoir apprécier la portée de cet énoncé normatif ayant des conséquences dans l’espace des marques nation, l’article s’appuie sur l’analyse longitudinale de deux corpus francophones permettant de repérer la fréquence d’utilisation de cette formule ainsi que les énoncés remarquables. Les résultats montrent que cette expression abrite la distinction d’avec le modèle américain mais aussi d’avec le modèle québécois. La presse française perçoit ce « modèle canadien » comme une portée d’entrée euphémisant la société de marché américaine, mais aussi comme le symbole d’un contrat multiculturel en opposition à la pensée républicaine française fondée sur un modèle unitaire à vocation universaliste.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47780735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research assumes that such differences arose with the emergence of issues often described as part of a culture war between religious and secular at the end of the twentieth century. This study, however, shows that such divisions are of older provenance. Using surveys of voters conducted in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and controlling for the potential impact of opinions on culture-war issues, the results seen here demonstrate that the religious–secular divide is older than previously believed and not rooted in the proverbial culture wars. This suggests that the religious–secular divide in Canadian politics reflects an even more fundamental and long-standing tension between religious and secular authority.Résumé:Plusieurs études ont établi l’existence de divisions basées sur des questions religieuses dans les préférences électorales des Canadiens à l’occasion des élections récentes. Par le passé, les chercheurs ont conclu que ces différences étaient apparues avec l’émergence d’enjeux souvent présentés comme faisant partie d’une guerre culturelle entre religieux et laïcs, particulièrement à la fin du xxe siècle. Le présent article montre cependant que ces divisions ont des origines plus anciennes. À partir d’enquêtes menées auprès des électeurs dans les années 1950, 1960 et 1970, et en tenant compte de l’effet possible des opinions sur les problèmes liés aux guerres culturelles, les résultats examinés ici démontrent que le clivage religion-laïcité est plus ancien qu’on ne le pensait auparavant et qu’il n’est pas ancré dans les proverbiales querelles culturelles. Cela porte à croire que le clivage religion-laïcité, fort présent dans la politique canadienne, reflète une tension encore plus importante, plus tenace et plus ancienne entre l’autorité religieuse et l’autorité laïque.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43432611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on descriptions of Canada–US cultural differences regarding national identities and views of “the other” from the work of Seymour Martin Lipset (and his critics) among Canadians and Americans at large, the authors uncover some evidence that is generally (although not universally) supportive of his characterizations. We then narrow our focus to compare the orientations of respondents who were raised in the bi-national borderlands region. Although the magnitude of difference between the views of the full sample and those of this geographically restricted group are generally not large, a multivariate test comparing scores on an additive index of cross-border affinity does show up robust evidence of increased affinity sentiments among those raised in these geographically proximate areas. Interestingly, however, the authors did not find that these heightened cross-border affinities are related to the frequency with which the individual crosses the border or to the existence of cross-border kinship networks.Résumé:Le présent article examine les différences sur le plan de l’identité nationale et de l’orientation vers « l’autre » chez les étudiants canadiens et américains qui fréquentent des universités géographiquement proches dans la région frontalière du sud de l’Ontario et du nord de l’État de New York. S’appuyant sur la description des différences culturelles entre le Canada et les États-Unis en ce qui concerne l’identité nationale et la perception de « l’autre » parmi les Canadiens et les Américains en général tirée des travaux de Seymour Martin Lipset (et de ses critiques), les auteurs mettent au jour des éléments qui étayent généralement cette description (mais pas toujours). Ils se focalisent ensuite sur l’orientation des personnes interrogées qui ont grandi dans la région frontalière. Bien que l’écart entre les opinions de l’échantillon dans son ensemble et celles de ce groupe géographiquement restreint soit souvent mince, un test multivarié comparant les résultats sur un indice cumulatif d’affinité transfrontalière fournit effectivement des preuves solides d’un sentiment d’affinité plus prononcé parmi les personnes élevées dans ces régions géographiquement proches. Chose intéressante, selon les auteurs, ces affinités transfrontalières plus poussées ne sont cependant pas dues à la traversée fréquente de la frontière ni à l’existence de réseaux de parenté transfrontaliers.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42863177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based in Montreal and Toronto, these initiatives and the communities overseeing them were largely inspired by the anarchist humanitarian work for the benefit of political prisoners. The latter was heralded by the universal anarchist Emma Goldman, a frequent visitor of Canada. Locally, however, both groups were rooted in a complex relational network, ranging from the predominantly socialist Jewish organization Workmen’s Circle (Arbeiter Ring) to Zionist milieux and smaller anarchist communities mainly of Russian and Italian origin. Drawing on archival findings from the Jewish collections of Montreal and Toronto, as well as testimonies and scholarship on Jewish radicalism in Canada, the article ambitions to measure the limits of this multi-scale cooperation and its consequences for the local anarchist presence. Through a comparative analysis of the Montreal and Toronto movements, the study attempts to explain the differences in their evolution, as well as to identify the possible, only partly overlapping reasons for their decline circa 1940.","PeriodicalId":29739,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Canadian Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46060369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
