A method of measuring the similarity of CCITT Group 4 compressed document images is proposed. The features are extracted directly from the changing elements of the compressed images. Weighted Hausdorff distance is utilized to assign all of the word objects from two document images to corresponding classes by an unsupervised classifier, whereas the possible stop words are excluded. Document vectors are built by the occurrence frequency of the word object classes, and the pair-wise similarity of two document images is represented by the scalar product of the document vectors. However, there is a problem that the difference between the transform coefficients of the lossless DCT and those of the (lossy) DCT is not very small. An existing framework based on local histograms is extended to multi-channel images. Within this framework three color mode operations are proposed; 1. Global mode operation for edge sharpening, noise reduction and small object removal, 2. Constrained mode operation for white noise filtering while preserving detail, and 3. Uncertain data mode filtering to incorporate prior knowledge about the certainty of the measurements into the mode computation. To further improve the performance of wavelet based algorithms, we have recently introduced the notion of footprint, which is a data structure which contains all the wavelet coefficients generated by a discontinuity. The combined use of wavelets and footprints leads to very efficient algorithms for compression and denoising of 1D piecewise smooth signals. We extend some of the previous results by presenting a new denoising algorithm, where footprints are chosen adaptively according to the singularity locations. This new algorithm outperforms previously proposed ones. Then, we introduce the notion of edgeprints, which represents a natural extension of footprints to the two dimensional case. We propose a novel robust video streaming system in which an interleaving is applied to the compressed bitstream before channel coding. The application of such pre-interleaving is able to significantly improve the error-combating performance of video streaming because the adoption of this pre-interleaving can simultaneously satisfy different requirements arising from both channel coding and source coding. For such a compound image source, we structure the image into nonoverlapping blocks and classify each block into four different classes based on the empirical statistics within the block. Different coding strategies are applied to different classes in order to achieve the very best compression performance. Panoramic videos have been used as a means for representing dynamic scenes or paths along a static environment. They allow the user to change viewpoints interactively at a point in time or space. High-resolution panoramic videos, while desirable, consume a significant amount of storage and bandwidth for transmission, and make real-time decoding very compute-intensive. A high performance MPEG-like compression algorithm, which takes into account the random access requirements and the redundancies of the panoramic video, is presented. A SVM classifier can be learned from training data of relevance images and irrelevance images marked by users. Using the classifier, the system can retrieve more images relevant to the query in the database efficiently. Experiments were carried out on a large-size database of 9918 images. It shows that the interactive learning and retrieval process can find correct images increasingly. The orientation estimation is established as a minimization problem, formulated as a tensor method, and simplified by solving its dual in terms of spatial partial derivatives of the image. First, the spectral density distribution around each pixel is obtained. The edge orientation is determined by fitting a straight line to this distribution. A matching error is devised in tensor form, and minimized by rotating the frequency domain principal axes. The orientation is computed from the spatial derivatives by transposing frequency domain operations to the spatial domain. The estimated edge orientations and magnitudes for different bands are converted to vectors and summed in the vector domain. A comparison of this method with the widely used estimators shows that the adapted tensor method improves the estimation precision even in the presence of extreme noise.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat.
