Sponsorships of projects in a variety of application areas over the years have made continuous research work possible in the field of electromagnetic scattering and the accompanying simulation software development. SRC's work to date in this area is summarized. Particular attention is given to the active library concept for target identification. An RCS prediction software named SRCRCS and an accompanying CAD modeling package named SCAMP are discussed. Based on this synthesis method, the feasibility of several CBRA (contour beam reflector antenna) configurations, such as a paraboloidal reflector fed by a large array, a shaped reflector illuminated by a single feed, and a shaped reflector fed by a small, array, are properly assessed for a representative application in a unified fashion. The phased array model considered consists of perfectly conducting periodically spaced infinite strips of infinitesimal thickness on top of a grounded dielectric substrate. The strips are excited by ribbon current probes. Applying a linear phase taper simultaneously along the E- and H-planes allows the beam to be scanned in any arbitrary direction. An excellent example of this microstrip antenna, a slender base station antenna, is shown. The double-layered broadband microstrip configuration yields a bandwidth of 17% at a voltage standing wave ratio of 1.5. The antenna width is extremely small at about 40 mm. The 120 degrees beamwidth in the horizontal plane is achieved by employing a 100-mm-width ground plane. A slender base station antenna covered with a 160-mm-diameter cylindrical radome has been constructed and tested. The fields in both regions are expanded in terms of spherical wave functions and the proper boundary conditions are imposed. The modal expansion coefficients are approximated by applying the least square error method to the equations resulting from matching the fields at the aperture. A standard method of moments technique is utilized to present three different models of mutual coupling interactions. The corresponding radiation patterns of a 3*3 array are compared with those of neglected mutual coupling. The results illustrate the movement in the radiation patterns as the modeling of the contribution of coupling effects increases from one level to another. The antenna uses a homogeneous lens and flat reflector to give an angle of scan of +or-60 degrees without degradation in performance. Artificial dielectric material consisting of spherical voids in polystyrene is used to realize the necessary lens dielectric constant.
