This representation scheme induced the creation of image processing architectures based on decision diagrams. In some situations, the application of this graph-based operator over the input images is faster than the corresponding conventional approach, in that the operators are constructively described by means of basic operators and set operations. However, when the conventional architecture exploits the bit parallelism of the microprocessor logical instructions, its performance often surpasses that of the graph-based system. This article proposes a novel approach, in which the decision diagrams guide the actions of the underlying conventional architecture, taking advantage of its parallelism, so that faster image processing can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The use of pre-computed visibility associated to regions in space, such as in the potentially visible sets (PVS) approach, may reduce the amount of data sent across the network. However, PVS for a region may still be complex, and further partitions are necessary. In this paper we introduce the concept of a smart visible set (SVS), which corresponds to (1) a partition of PVS information into dynamic subsets that take into account client position, and (2) an ordering mechanism that enumerates these dynamic sets using a visual importance metric. Results comparing the SVS and PVS approach are presented.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The images collected are classified in two semantic classes (photographs and graphics) but only photographs are indexed. It basically stores information about regions with the same color in the image (chromatic regions), such as size, position and boundaries with other regions. This data representation is made using histogram variations of the image as graphs: the modified color adjacency graph (MCAG) and the variance graph (SVG). Image retrieval is done by applying a similar metric based on a comparison of the graphs.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Such interpolations are especially important for the meteorological visualization of moving clouds for TV broadcasting purposes. The traditional method for the animation production is to fade out one dataset and fade in the next. The visual result is not very realistic if the clouds should move quickly and the distances between them are too great, because blending produces no clouds movements. In this paper we present abalone interpolation for the calculation of visually realistic cloud movements. The presented solution is not only suitable for meteorological visualization but also for visual preparation of flow calculation results.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The analysis of cement-based materials is useful in the evaluation of mechanical properties, water absorption, air permeability and evolution of hydration degree. The latter is the motivation of this paper. New advantageous techniques of analysis based on the image information are possible using electronic microscopy. We propose here an alternative procedure to the segmentation of microstructures of cement and aggregates in concrete. The central idea consists of a particular use of the morphological operator watershed. Speckle noise appears in data obtained with coherent illumination, as is the case of sonar, laser, ultrasound-B and synthetic aperture radar images. This noise is non-Gaussian and non-additive and, therefore, classical techniques of processing and analysis may fail. A universal parametric statistical model has been proposed for such data, and numerical issues arise when estimating its parameters. In particular, the usual techniques for optimization and for solving systems of non-linear equations often fail to converge and/or to produce acceptable results, specially when dealing with small samples. An alternated method is proposed and assessed, and it is shown to produce sensible results. As an application, real and simulated data are analyzed. We show that the discrimination of minute features in synthetic aperture radar images can be performed using the proposed procedure.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. First, data produced by a graphics tablet describing a signature to be tested are treated with wavelet transforms to generate features to be nonlinearly confronted with a reference signature chosen among 10 previously stored from the same writer. In order to recover the time dependence lost in the wavelet treatment, we included the level of departure from the diagonal line in the warping function as a complementary measure of distance. In a second approach, the functions x(t) and y(t) describing position in time of each pixel of the same test signature were directly (though nonlinearly) compared to their counterparts from the reference. We concluded that both approaches showed good fidelity to all details in the signatures, with acceptable false rejection rates (we obtained around 30% FRR) to this kind of biometry. On the other hand, the inclusion of the wavelet transform turned out to be an essential step for the achievement of low false acceptance rates. It was only with the inclusion of the wavelet transform, at the right level of resolution, that we managed to completely prevent trained forgeries to be accepted (0% FAR) in the cases studied.","PeriodicalId":286814,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
