Apart from genetics, autoimmunity has been implicated in its pathogenesis. In this context, we set out to study the role of Pro- inflammatory cytokines in PTC in South Indian population. Material and methods: This pilot prospective case-control study was conducted on surgically managed PTC patients. Institutional ethical committee approval was obtained. Diagnosis of PTC was based on imaging, fine needle aspiration cytology and later confirmed by histopathology. Exclusion criteria were subjects with any disease or medication interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Serum samples were collected from 46 PTC subjects and 44 age matched healthy controls. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and high sensitive C reactive protein (hsCRP), leptin levels were measured in all serum samples. Statistical analysis was performed by one way ANOVA with Dunnet’s test and Pearson correlation tests. Results: The mean hSCRP level in PTC and controls were 18.3 ± 3.1 mg/mL and 5.5 ± 1.2 mg/mL respectively. The mean TNF-α level, IL-6 level and Leptin levels were 295 ± 28 pg/mL, 13.6 ± 4.4 pg/mL and 1.93 ± 0.8 ng/mL respectively. Serum leptin level in controls was 3.6 ±1.8 ng/mL. There was statistically significant difference of all the pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to controls (P value <0.05) with negative correlation for leptin levels. Conclusions: Our study shows raised titers of pro-inflammatory markers – IL-6, TNFα and hsCRP, while reduced leptin levels correlated with PTC suggesting a contributory role. But, the exact immuno-modulatory mechanism needs more research.","PeriodicalId":286585,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and All Body Health Research","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116311894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By increasing the received signal intensity with depth, the artifacts in the uniformity of a B-mode image intensity are reduced. The purpose of TGC is to normalize the signal amplitude with time, compensating for depth. When the image is displayed, similar materials should have similar brightness, regardless of depth; this is achieved by “Linear-in-dB” Gain, which means the decibel gain is a linear function of the control voltage. Gain is expressed in dB, a logarithmic ratio of the output power relative to the input power. Gain can be calculated by subtracting the input from the output levels when both are expressed in dBm, which is power relative to 1 milliwatt. The TGC creates uniformity in the brightness of the echoes when used in conjunction with the overall gain. The best approach is to center all the TGC settings before adjusting the overall gain. After adjusting the overall gain, the TGC can then be adjusted to compensate for attenuation at specific depth. Gain is a uniform amplification of the ultrasonic signal that returns to the transducer after it travels through the tissue.","PeriodicalId":286585,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and All Body Health Research","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114151793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of malaria infection in children aged 0-5 years attending the Moanda medical centre in south-eastern Gabon. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional survey was conducted among children aged 0-5 years who came to the Moanda medical centre in January to December 2021, using the results of microscopic examinations (thick drops) recorded in the laboratory registers of the centre. Results: Out of 770 children aged 0 to 5 years registered for this study, 302 were positive for malaria infection, a total prevalence of 39.22%. With a mean age of 24.21 months, boys (415 cases, 53.90%) were more prevalent than girls (355 cases, 46.10%). While the 0-12 months age group was in the majority with 113 cases of malaria infection, i.e. 37.42%, the study showed no significant correlation between gender, age groups and malaria infection. The distribution of malaria infection by type of quater showed that it was more prevalent in the under-integrated (disadvantaged) quaters with n=182, i.e. 60.26% cases, than in the integrated quaters. The seasonal evolution of malaria infection according to age groups revealed two peaks, which represented periods of higher prevalence. The periods between the months of February and March, which are included in the short rainy season, and the month of June, which had the highest peak, corresponding to the long dry season. Conclusion: The prevalence of malaria infection in the study area showed seasonal variation during the study period. The results of this survey may be useful for a future update of the epidemiological profile of malaria infection in children aged 0-5 years. This may be essential to guide resource allocation, evaluation and prioritisation of malaria interventions at Moanda Medical Centre.","PeriodicalId":286585,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and All Body Health Research","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122923637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information’s on their healing properties and potentials has been handed down or transmitted from generations to generations through hundreds of years within and among human groups, cultures and traditions in folklore medicine without proper documentation. This study investigated the phytochemicals composition and efficacy/potency of locally prepared anti-arthritis remedy. Coconut oil and Sida acuta leaves were used for the formulation of the remedy. Sida acuta plant was collected at 6:00am, the leaves were removed and washed thoroughly with tap water and rinse with distilled water and dry in a shade for two weeks before being pulverized into fine powder. The coconuts were slide into pieces and blended into a paste, mixed with clean warm water and filtered, then poured into a pot to boil for about an hour, the coconut oil was obtained and allowed to cold before transmitted into air tight container. The coconut oil was poured into a clean pot and heated for five minutes, the pulverized Sida acuta leave was added to the heated coconut oil and allow to boil for few minutes until it turned greenish-black. The mixture was allowed to cold and then filtered with a new handkerchief or cheese clothes; the filtered oil was stored in a well labeled air-tight containers before being distributed to our volunteers with established cases of arthritis. The remedy was given to one hundred (100) already diagnosed patients with osteoarthritis for topical application/massage. The application was done twice daily for three (3) weeks and questionnaires were used as a tool to obtained feedback from our volunteer (Patients). The phytochemical result showed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, alkanoids, saponins, terpenoids alongside many essential fatty acid/oils as shown by the GCMS result. The feedback from our tool used (questionnaires) showed that 65% of our volunteers reported complete disappearance of inflammations and its associated pains while 35% reported drastic reduction but slight pains and mild inflammations associated with arthritis still persist. This may have been as a result of the presence of various flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids etc alongside the presence of essential fatty acids/oils in the preparation as confirm by the GCMS result. Conclusively, from our labouratory screening and report/feedback from our four liked scale questionnaires, the locally made anti-arthritic remedy prove to be effective in reducing the pains and inflammation observed among arthritic patients and movement restored for those who could not move for a long time due to associated pains and inflammation(s).","PeriodicalId":286585,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and All Body Health Research","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116171766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
