We consider the use of a skew-symmetric block-diagonal matrix as a structured shift. Properties of Hamiltonian and skew-Hamiltonian matrices are used to show that the shift can be effectively used in the iterative solution of skew-symmetric linear systems or nonsymmetric linear systems with a dominant skew-symmetric part. The method involves an underlying FMM matrix given by a sequence of smaller matrices (called generators for convenience). Although there has been extensive work in designing and applying FMM techniques, the stability of the FMM and the stable FMM matrix factorization have rarely been studied. In this work, we propose techniques that lead to stable operations with FMM matrices. One key objective is to give stabilization strategies that can be used to provide low-rank approximations and translation relations in the FMM satisfying some stability requirements. The standard Taylor expansions used in FMMs yield basis generators susceptible to instability. Here, we introduce some scaling factors to control the relevant norms of the generators and give a rigorous analysis of the bounds of the entrywise magnitudes. The second objective is to use the one-dimensional case as an example to provide an intuitive construction of FMM matrices satisfying some stability conditions and then convert an FMM matrix into a hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) form that admits stable ULV-type factorizations. This bridges the gap between the FMM and stable FMM matrix factorizations. The HSS construction is done analytically and does not require expensive algebraic compression. Relevant stability studies are given, which show that the resulting matrix forms are suitable for stable operations. Note that the essential stabilization ideas are also applicable to higher dimensions. Extensive numerical tests are given to illustrate the reliability and accuracy.","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117016830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IDR is a family of efficient short recurrence methods introduced by Sonneveld and Van Gijzen for solving large systems of nonsymmetric linear equations. These methods generate residual vectors that live in a sequence of nested subspaces. We present the IDR(s) method and give two improvements of its convergence. We also define and give a global version of the IDR(s) method and describe a partial and a complete improvement of its convergence. Moreover, we recall the block version and state its improvements. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the performances of the derived algorithms compared to the well-known classical GMRES method and the bi-conjugate gradient stabilized method for systems with a single right-hand side, as well as the global GMRES, the global bi-conjugate gradient stabilized, the block GMRES, and the block bi-conjugate gradient stabilized methods for systems with multiple right-hand sides.","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123878966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A time-fractional diffusion equation with the Caputo fractional derivative of order α ∈ (0, 1) is considered on a bounded polygonal domain. Some numerical methods are presented based on the finite element method (FEM) in space on a quasi-uniform mesh and L-type discretizations (i.e., L1, L1-2, and L1-2-3 formulas) to approximate the Caputo derivative. Stability and convergence of the L1-2-3 FEM as well as L1-2 FEM are proved rigorously. The lack of positivity of the coefficients of these formulas is the main difficulty in the analysis of the proposed methods. This has hampered the analysis of methods using finite elements mixed with L1-2 and L1-2-3 discretizations. Our proofs are based on the concept of a special kind of discrete Grönwall’s inequality and the energy method. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128324130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Orthogonal polynomials on the semicircle were introduced by Gautschi and Milovanovi´c in [Rend. Sem. Mat. Univ. Politec. Torino, Special Issue (July 1985), pp. 179-185] and [J. Approx. Theory, 46 (1986), pp. 230-250]. In this paper we give an account of this kind of orthogonality, weighted generalizations mainly oriented to Chebyshev weights of the first and second kinds, including several interesting properties of such polynomials. Moreover, we also present a number of new results including those for Laurent polynomials (rational functions) orthogonal on the semicircle. In particular, we give their recurrence relations and study special cases for the Legendre weight and for the Chebyshev weights of the first and second kind. Explicit expressions for such orthogonal systems with Chebyshev weights are presented, as well as the corresponding zero distributions.","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130005743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our starting points are the observations that under natural disturbance conditions, transition appears to take place only in the developing entrance region, as observed in Reynolds' color-band experiments, and that the critical Reynolds number Rc has a minimum value of about 2000 when using a sharp-edged uniform radius pipe, as observed in our earlier color-band experiments. The entrance region is defined as the region from the pipe inlet to the point where the inlet flow fully develops into Hagen-Poiseuille flow for a sharp-edged entrance pipe. In the case of a bell-mouth entrance pipe, the entrance region includes the bell-mouth entrance region. We derive for the entrance region a new ratio of the increase in kinetic energy flux (KE flux) to a wall effect, where the wall effect is the radial wall power (R-Wall-Power) exerted on the wall by the radial component of the viscous term in the Navier-Stokes equations. In dimensionless form, KE flux is a constant, although R-Wall-Power decreases as the Reynolds number Re increases. Our previous calculations for the case of a sharp-edged entrance pipe indicate thatKE fluxtotal R-Wall-Power (T-R-Wall-Power) at Re  2000. Accordingly, our hypothesis is that Rc can be derived from the relation betweenKE flux and T-R-Wall-Power. We discuss, moreover, whether or not this criterion can apply to different entrance geometries such as the bell-mouth entrances considered by Reynolds.","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122983500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to obtain a stable approximate solution using iterative regularization methods, it is important to use a suitable stopping rule to terminate the iterations at the appropriate step. Recently, Qinian Jin and Wei Wang (2018) have proposed a heuristic rule to stop the iterations for the iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method. The advantage of a heuristic rule over the existing a priori and a posteriori rules is that it does not require accurate information on the noise level, which may not be available or reliable in practical applications. In this paper, we propose a heuristic stopping rule for an iterated Lavrentiev regularization method. We derive error estimates under suitable nonlinearity conditions on the operator F .","PeriodicalId":282695,"journal":{"name":"ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134540796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
