Another objective of this research is to find the relations between the uses of strategies and functions of requests in English. Film is a picture of everyday life and we can see the cultures of a society, one of which is the use of language. To view the request speech acts in English, then two films that use English as a communication tool with regard to the different ratings were selected. The selection of films with different ratings are intended to see differences in the use of language in movies watched by children and adolescents. Rating in the selected movie consists of G (general audiences) and PG (parental guide suggested). Rating G is a film that is for the public, which means that the film can be watched by all ages. Rating PG is a movie that can be watched by children under parental guidance. Having found the forms and strategies of request speech acts in different films with different ratings, the situations and conditions of the use and the functions of request strategies were identified. Forms of speech act strategies invoked were classified based on the theory advanced by Trosborg (1995), while to see the functions of request speech acts Tsui’s Theory (1994) was used. As for achieving the objectives of this study, the authors use several effective methods. In collecting the data, the techniques used were watching and listening to the films that have been selected. Then recorded phrases of request speech acts found in the films. Once collected, the data were analyzed by using analysis technique proposed by Spradley (1980), ie domain analysis, taxonomic, componential and cultural value. From the analysis, it was concluded that there was no difference in strategies and functions used in the two films. Both use four strategies, namely indirect request, the hearer-oriented condition, speaker-based condition, and direct request. In addition, they also illustrate the same five functions of request speech acts, request for action, request for permission, offer, invitation, and proposal. The most frequently used strategy and function are direct request and request for action respectively.","PeriodicalId":280647,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal Perspective : Education, Language, and Literature","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115403681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the classes of English Language Teaching (ELT), teachers must be able to communicate either verbally or non-verbally with students to stimulate them to learn English effectively. This paper attempts to shed some light on language varieties used by English teachers in English to Young Leaners (EYL) classes. The language variation investigated is specified into the way how teachers give instruction, according to Holmes (1993), which is grouped into three categories: descriptive sentences, imperative sentences and interrogative sentences. On the ground of doing this study, two EYL teachers were involved. Since this research employs qualitative research design, the data for this study were gained through direct observation and teacher reflective notes. The study revealed that imperative sentences dominate the expressions used by teachers in EYL classes followed by questions and declarative sentences. Total Physical Response (TPR) is still assumed to be the most effective way to teach English to young learners.  ","PeriodicalId":280647,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal Perspective : Education, Language, and Literature","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121776470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most interesting charm is symbolism used by the poet, in one single word lays a deeper explanation beyond what is perceptible by the eyes. Therefore, the aim of this research was to reveal the symbolism in “The Haunted Palace”, a gothic-themed poetry written by a well-known poet Sir Edgar Allan Poe. Having analyzed this poetry, the writer later found that Poe’s “The Haunted Palace” has some unique symbols used by the poet himself. Despite of writing long and descriptive lines, the poet chose appropriate symbols that lead the readers to think and conjecturing more deeply. Every symbol used in “The Haunted Palace” represents simplicity, authenticity and brilliancy of Poe himself. Thus, a symbolism holds a very important role of poetry. It is not only pleasantly presented but also elucidating things beyond its literal substance. It proves that Poe’s “The Haunted Palace” is pleasant to be read but difficult to be interpreted.Keywords: poetry, symbolism, The Haunted Palace, Edgar Allan Poe ","PeriodicalId":280647,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal Perspective : Education, Language, and Literature","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130048354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main problem is the discrepancy between school educators’ competence and the special needs of students. The scope in which the studyis conducted ranges from the variety of processes used in political text. The analysis is conducted in accordance with the grand theories put forwarded by Halliday, Mathiesen, and Thompson, with some supportive theoretical background from Downing and Locke, and Eggins and some theories of metaphorin general.   The result of this research shows that the types of processes found in this research almost covers all the types of processes, namely: Material, Mental, verbal, and Relational Processes. Theories used to support this research are from Patel and Jain (2008) about the audio visual media and reading. Audio visual media involves more than one sensory organs of the learner which improves retentiveness and makes learning permanent also seeing and hearing go together which play ordinary roles in learning. Meanwhile, reading is very important for the teacher to carry out, to know, and to check the students’ pronunciation, information, stress, paused, and rhythm and their ability in various short of punctuation marks. The researchers used experimental research of method, and took two classes consisting of 30 students each class as sample in SMP Al Washliyah Sumber. The data for this experimental study were students’ reading scores, and the reading scores were analyzed of using McMillan and Schumacher’s formula. The research found that the reading scores of the experimental group is higher than the control group. The result of t account is 0.75, t table is 1,672 for α = 5% it means that t account is higher than t table (t account > t table). Therefore, the conclusion is Digital Fairy Tale Book is effective in teaching reading comprehension. It makes the students enthusiastic to learn the fairy tale text and help them produce correct intonation or tunes and notice how English is spoken differently from the way they are written and listen very well.
