The first part surveys the resources found in scriptural traditions (including some texts eventually excluded from the canon) for the Christian development of heaven and hell. The second part looks at representative examples of early Christian exegesis with respect to the following topics: corporeality in the afterlife, the status of the dead now before the resurrection, millennialism, universal salvation, the apocatastasis, the development of purgatory and prayer for the dead, Christ’s ‘harrowing of hell’, the differentiation of rewards in heaven, and the nature of the rewards and punishments in heaven and hell respectively.","PeriodicalId":279897,"journal":{"name":"The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116071914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet Christians adopted Israel’s book of Psalms in toto as part of the treasury of the people of Christ. The Psalter not only offered prophetic teaching and training in spirituality. For many with a radical Christological perspective, the texts mediated the very voice of Christ speaking in the first person, thus opening a window on the inner life of the redeeming Lord. The Psalms received more comment from early Christian writers than any other Old Testament book. It was a constant presence in liturgy, a training book for prayer, a source of theological instruction, a blueprint for spiritual advancement, and a key that unlocked the whole Bible. The chapter examines different ways the Psalms functioned among the early Christians.","PeriodicalId":279897,"journal":{"name":"The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127793269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contributions of Georges Florovsky, Vladimir Lossky, Jean Daniélou, Henri de Lubac, and Hans Urs von Balthasar are singled out for particular significance. Among Protestants, the most important work has been done in recent decades, especially by Thomas Oden, who has spearheaded a popular series of compilations of patristic commentary, and by scholars who are producing commentaries on biblical books that include the reception history. Lest the term ‘retrieval’ be misleading, the chapter notes that patristic exegesis was well known in prior centuries as well, and indeed it continued to guide Catholic and Orthodox biblical studies into the early part of the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":279897,"journal":{"name":"The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that for the fathers of the Church, the literal sense of Scripture was not a free-standing independent sense, but was intrinsically related to, and ordered towards, the figurative or spiritual sense(s). Since that is true, the literal sense of Scripture cannot be fully appreciated apart from an understanding of the spiritual or figurative sense(s), and, since this aspect of patristic exegesis is the one perhaps most foreign to contemporary exegetical sensibilities, the chapter spends the majority of its time demonstrating from patristic texts what is meant by the figurative or spiritual sense of Scripture. This then paves the way for a treatment of the literal sense and its relationship to the figurative sense as it has been presented in the earlier part of the chapter.","PeriodicalId":279897,"journal":{"name":"The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126438926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It begins by considering how fourth-century readers were shaped by the Church’s adaptation of ancient literary-critical practices in the late second and early third centuries. Then treatment of an extended example—the reading of Proverbs 8.22, and especially in Athanasius—enables us to draw out ways in which Scripture generated, bounded, and interrupted Christian thought. Scriptural terminology and phrasing generates reflection, the same also pushes Christian thought in particular directions, and the same also forces Christian thinkers to confess divine mystery, interrupting the speculative gaze. Turning to another example, from later in the second century—the reading of John 5.19—confirms this analysis and enables us to see the exegesis of this period as highly creative, but within an exegetical culture formed in the first two centuries of the Church’s life.","PeriodicalId":279897,"journal":{"name":"The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128554624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
