This article presents an analysis of four technological alternatives for the digital terrestrial TV platform return channel subsystem, to be deployed in Brazil. Major aspects taken into account for choosing the most suitable alternative are highlighted, such as the performance and cost factors, in light of the country's regional social and economic differences, the conditions under which the broadcast and telecommunication services are rendered, and the coverage as well as the availability of the main networks that support such services. Deployment cost estimates related to the selected alternative - WiMAX - are also presented by considering the coverage arrangements that best satisfy Brazil's singularities, the TV signals coverage and the demographic conditions of each Brazilian municipality.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129970634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approximately geometric representation yields relatively low computational cost and a suitable frequency resolution, thus making the BQFFB an efficient tool for musical analysis applications. A description of the BQFFB algorithm is presented along with a complete evaluation of its corresponding computational complexity. Computer simulations are then included to illustrate the BQFFB performance against other methods from the literature, such as the fast Fourier transform, the standard fast filter bank, and the constant-Q transform.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129985129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Performance evaluation and comparison with the usual hard-decision demodulated wavelet- coded schemes are performed via computer simulation. The numerical results so obtained indicate that the proposed technique is an effective tool for performance improvement of wavelet-coded PSK systems. Therefore, this new approach for soft-decision may lead to new alternatives for exploiting the potential of wavelet coding for digital communications over wireless channels.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131781409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous measurements of environmental parameters may help to prevent and cope with environmental damages. Sensors that measure environment's conditions may be placed at appropriate locations and transmit environmental data. In a case of emergency, environmentalist rush to the affected area to analyze the problem and take appropriate actions. They have to communicate among themselves and collect data from the sensors. This paper proposes the use of MANETs (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks) to support the communications among sensors and environmentalists. Simulation results show that MANETs can support reliable communications.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130898401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analytical models are derived for the mean weight-error vector and the mean square error behaviors which are simpler than existing models. The simpler models allow the determination of new convergence and steady-state results that should prove useful for design purposes. Simulation results display excellent agreement between theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo simulation results. Examples show that the new theory can be used to predict both transient and steady-state behaviors of the FXLMS algorithm in active control of sound and vibration.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132161640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MODEX algorithm is a method of direction estimation (MODE) based estimator that conveniently increases the number of MODE estimates, increasing the order of the polynomial, whose roots (candidates) estimate the DOA parameters. To select the better set of candidates, MODEX employs a maximum likelihood (ML) procedure. The proposed method affects the candidate selection process and improves its performance. This performance gain is achieved by replacing the original sample covariance matrix by a new one computed after a noise reduction filtering on the snapshot vectors. The modified selection procedure improves the MODEX performance and reduces significantly the threshold signal-to- noise ratio.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132689246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design of two of the classifiers involves post-training procedures for labelling the neurons, i.e. no class information is used prior to the training phase. The other two classifiers incorporate class information prior to the training phase. All the classifiers are evaluated using the well-known Yale face database and their performances compare favorably with standard neural supervised classifiers.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114618075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We develop a fault detection approach, which promises to be more effective to identify AP failures. In particular, we focus on the problem of overcoming APs failures working with reconfiguration of the remaining APs by changing parameters such as power level and frequency channels. Our approach consists of two main phases: Design and Fault Response. In Design phase, we deal with quantifying, placement and setting up of APs according to both area coverage and performance criteria. In Fault Response phase we consider the reconfiguration of active APs in order to deal with AP fault in the service area. Finally, we describe one of the major characteristics of the proposed architecture, which is a simple implementation in concordance with established IEEE 802.11 standards and related management systems.","PeriodicalId":271294,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116404293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
