Focus on designing public spaces is to showcase- firstly, immediate need to address waste crisis; secondly, ways by which recycled waste can be adopted as a mainstream attitude. Trash need not be abused in landfills, rather can become input for production. Study objectives dwell in addressing developing countries, where paradigm of ‘Waste to Wealth’ becomes one of the fundamental criteria for emerging as Smart cities. Once civic spaces attribute responsibility to the impending environmental crisis, momentum gains at grassroot-community level as public spaces bear more visibility & appeal. Need for industrial ‘re-revolution’ is sensed to reverse the negative impacts and encourage upcycling culture with efficient management of Municipal solid waste (MSW) which forms largest component of a city’s waste-output. This study discusses theories and case studies which adopted MSW in innovative ways under two broad objectives of design- aesthetics and functionality. Highlight will be on Zero-waste economical urban initiatives to enhance imagery. The study derives a ‘Toolkit for public space design’ using MSW as framework for UD schemes.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127593785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demand for coarse aggregate is increasing rapidly in the Kathmandu Valley for the construction of building-related structures after the Maoist revolution and the devastating earthquake of April 2015. Aggregates from different quarry sites should meet the physical requirements prescribed by the Indian Standard (IS), the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC), the National Building Code (NBC), the Nepal Standard (NS-297), the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Works (SSRBW). The perceptions of people from both sources; source 1, dissatisfaction with the sources, problems in the local community not addressed by the local government and management team were both responded to with support for the closure of the plant. The majority of respondents from source 2 were satisfied with the responses, having few complaints.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115245343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Satdobato, located in the central business district of Lalitpur connects busy approaches and faces congestion. The environment and traffic flow parameters are modeled in a microsimulation software ‘SIDRA Intersection 8.0’. The calibration and validation of the intersection model in the software are performed using field data. The performance of the intersection is evaluated based onthe LOS, and delay, and back of the queue. The evaluation of the performance is followed by the implementation of the performance enhancement strategies. Optimization of the signal timing is performed by changing the cycle lengths and splitting the timing. Further, the continuous left-turning movement is controlled under signal time. Appropriate recommendations are provided based on the evaluation of the system performances after making changes in the model.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116509881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under such circumstances, these spaces can be used as a medium for educating the public regarding various things. People can be taught many things of importance to them as well as for welfare of the community through many means and this paper attempts to explore parameters in architectural and urban design which can be used as a medium for educating the public. Further study has been done to find sub-parameters which can suggest pinpointed interventions to narrate stories and teach people through public spaces. Furthermore, statistical research on survey results has been conducted to understand the impact of these sub parameters upon the public. The data has been analyzed to find the optimal direction of research and development of certain parameters for more efficient learning spaces in public areas. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been carried out to identify parameters and their weightage for investing resources for the best quality of educational public spaces with minimum investment of resources. Interpretation of statistical research reveals interesting facts on which parameters should attract more expenditure in current designs and which should attract more research for future development to maximize development of public educational experiences.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131202366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nepal is, therefore, not an exception to this situation. This study examined how clients perceived local contractors’ performance in the construction of residential buildings in Pokhara, Nepal. The main aim of this study was to analyse the degree to which clients were satisfied with the building projects that local contractors completed in Pokhara. In this study, a questionnaire was created after consulting with experts, consultants, literature review, questionnaires were provided to clients. Based on the relative importance index the collected data were statistically analysed to determine how satisfied clients were with local contractors’ performance. The results indicated that clients considered local contractors’ performance in the construction of residential buildings fell short of their expectations. The following aspects of the adopted groups caused the most dissatisfaction: the ability to contribute to project brief development, site supervisor, planning and scheduling jobs, minimizing waste, efforts made by the contractor to meet specifications, personal protective equipment, labour motivation and employee devotion to contractors’ aims, deep interest in the issues and considering them as essential requests, acceptance of the client’s claims and the ability to handle variances. Finally, it was determined that the various parties needed to communicate with one another more effectively to create a better working atmosphere that increases levels of satisfaction for clients. Furthermore, common understanding and cooperation must prevail and the contractors must enhance their practices and procedures.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"149 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115584672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research is focused on two commercial buildings; Hanuman Central and One stop mall (Birtamode, Jhapa). These building are selected for research as both of the buildings are considered as largest shopping malls and they also vary in planning and construction technology. Standard fire safety status check was done with comparing with NBC 107:1994. A standard check list was prepared and compared with current status of buildings. Data was collected from site visits with check list and key informant interview. During survey of the existing commercial building it was found that not all the guideline mentioned in NBC 107: 1994 was followed. Many aspects of door detailing and stairs detailing were considered in Hanuman Central whereas in case of one stop mall staircase was narrow. Design aspect of Hanuman Central was found more advanced. There were four Exit route however only two of them lead to open space. One escape route lead to basement parking and another was behind the building from where street was nearly 300 m far. Semi enclosed stairs were present in all four buildings. No proper signage of exit was found. One stop mall seems to be more prepared and concerned about the fire safety. Smoke detector, dry powder extinguishers was found in working condition. Water hose reel was installed but ws not functional as water tank was not operational and also lack of trained manpower was main problem there. It had four exit, two staircase and two escalators.","PeriodicalId":267306,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advanced Research in Construction and Urban Architecture","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127196307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
