They may seem to exist on spontaneity and chaos, but in fact rely on certain infrastructures and conditions that enable them to operate. However, as developments continue to progress in cities and suburbs, there will be inevitable changes in lifestyle, mobility and values of public spaces. Temporary markets will be, if they are not already, under pressure from the processes of urbanisation. With these changes expected to happen, how can temporary markets continue to develop with their rich experiential qualities? This paper explores strategies to accommodate prospective temporary markets in Putrajaya, Malaysia, given the condition that the markets are temporary and will have to be relocated in the future. The study employed techniques of observation, mapping, personal experiences and speculative design propositions to understand and test different ways of how the markets might operate in a changing context. The findings revealed that the operations of temporary markets need to be adapted to its context, through choreographing the flows of its spaces, users and activities, and the provision of specific hard and soft infrastructures. The planning of a market involves strategies at multiple scales.","PeriodicalId":261417,"journal":{"name":"Spaces and flows: an international journal of urban and extraurban studies","volume":"107 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130130461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless connectivity and its infrastructure, un-sense-able to human body, are increasingly important in our interactions with the environment and with each other. In order to better understand the effects of wireless communication on space, interactive installations that enable a tangible experience of connectivity were used. Users’ network activity was recorded through a special system developed for these experiments, which evolved over the course of the research. The system gathered data on fluctuations of wireless signals in space and the interactive installations served as a ground for discussion on user experience. Combining qualitative interpretation of these discussions with an analysis of network activity, this work broadens the understanding of the complexity of cohabitation between humans, built structures and wireless infrastructures.","PeriodicalId":261417,"journal":{"name":"Spaces and flows: an international journal of urban and extraurban studies","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121963537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically the urban regeneration process that has been conducted on a social housing district (São João de Deus – SJD) located on the outskirts of Porto, in northern Portugal. The public policies that have been, over the past decades, attempting to deal with this problematic neighbourhood, have also acted as a driving force, creating population movements across Porto. Thus, forcing residential mobility is seen as a part of the solution. This approach is criticized because it does not promote citizens’ participation in the process; in fact, it deals with people as if they were easily-moved pieces in an urban game, forgetting that this kind of policy militates against the development of social networks. This has a negative influence on the social inclusion of these families. Furthermore, the evaluation of this urban regeneration process reveals a sequence of contradictory strategies, as a consequence of political changes in the local authority. This erratic approach evolved from the applic-ation of a range of ideas, from revitalization measures to radical solutions such as demolition. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of these decisions, not only on the demolished neighbourhood but also on those areas of the city that were used to receive SJD’s citizens, questioning whether or not this decision does not amplify the trends of urban segregation within the Porto city.","PeriodicalId":261417,"journal":{"name":"Spaces and flows: an international journal of urban and extraurban studies","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127643436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
